  • I want this knife so bad, but i wont pay more then 60$ on a knife this size :S

  • lmao thats a joke, NOT worth it at all... maybe for 35$

  • @gcboyallday You think you'll find a knife with carbon fiber scales and VG-10 regardless of size? Not happening. Overpriced? Yes. Worth 35$? NO.

  • they should make a cheeper version of it.

  • Simply put, if something is illogically priced, don't buy it. This is something that defies logic and reason (a 2" bladed knife for $200 MSRP). You could buy a Spyderco Tenacious (around $30-$35) or any number of small EDC knives for a 1/5-1/4 the cost of this over-priced novelty.

It would be like buying a taco at Taco Bell for $30. You wouldn't pay $30 for a taco, why would you pay $200 for a small knife?

  • I'd give em $7 for it

  • New SS version is out in the $80 range. Still overpriced for such a small folding knife with vg10 steel. Why not get the Endura for less or a Kershaw Rake for the same price. Add another $10 and get the Spyderco Sage. I know it's a cool looking piece and I do appreciate the cool look but even the carbon fiber version should be around $50-$55.

  • you can get a sage 1 for the price of that which is a lot more useful, i do love the design of the balance, but seriously spyerco needs to stop pricing their knives for what people will pay, and instead price them for what people want to pay

  • thats spyderco for ya :|

  • Spyderco seems to think they're able to add about $100 to any knife that has Ed Schemp's logo on it.

  • I find it kind of goofy looking.

  • 150?!?! I was expecting CPM S30V steel for that insane price.

  • you are right, its over priced, and kinda ugly

  • I bought it and like it, however it is quite small for the price. It is beautiful though!

  • ec schempp claims that spyderco is coming out with a much cheaper stainless steel version

  • if they use the same price as the ladybug, then i will buy it.

  • I don't like it and you are right, the price is wayyy to high!

  • I took the clip off. I'm a smoker and like my zippo in the 5th pocket. Where this knife would usually ride. it fits great loosely in the pocket with no clip and my smokes riding in one pocket with my smartphone + cash in the other.

  • Is this why Ed Schemp stuff often goes out of production?

  • Yea there's a nutnfancy shot show video where he talks to ed schemp and he says this was a limited sprint run of 600 so cost is higher over such a small amount. I still wouldn't buy it no matter how collectible it is. I did order the new lum carbon fiber and the sage 1. Couldn't resist after seeing you guys play with them. ;)

  • I think it's too big.It wouldn't fit in my pocket.

  • @555Nato If your pocket can only hold one penny, I would agree with you.

  • @Nurple17 ,I assume you knew i was kidding right?

  • @555Nato I did.

  • @Nurple17 AH ! I under estimated you ;-)

  • @555Nato ... say waa?

  • @Shialuk ,no,'say wot'.Captain Sensible...

  • This is a limited run knife and only about 600 will be made, total. That's coming from Ed Schempps mouth, btw.

  • are all of ed schemmps knives expensive/ balance/ barong is that what your paying for?

  • I so in another video by spydercollector they have or are comeing out with a all stainless steel model which I think would drop the price I don't know if it's true or not but I'd like one if the price would come down around 70 bucks

  • id take it for 20 bucks haha

the persistance is only 30 bucks

  • @bladeops It doesn't say "PIN" it says "PLN" as in "Plain" or no extra colour... Not OD green or anything like that

  • @BladeOps it doesn't say "PIN" it says "PLN" as in "plain"; no added colour...

  • spyderco said they will be doing a all stainless version which will be priced a bit more in the cricket price range so something to look forward to in 2011!

  • i kinda like the knife but is not getting the price tag on such a small knife

  • The price makes more sense, not complete sense mind you, but more sense, if you think of it as an artistic purchase rather than a utility purchase. You appreciate the form and design, but don't value it monetarily, while others may. Like you, I wouldn't shell out that kind of cash for so little physical substance, but others might. You can't argue taste. Thanks for the review.

  • @irhombus Great point you can't always put a price on taste or art

  • @irhombus

Get real, it isn't an 'artistic purchase', It's a mass-produced tool made in a factory.

  • @Asbeau And every painting everywhere is an original, painted by hand by a real person. No copies ever made in a factory overseas. Everyone buys an original. smh.

  • @Asbeau there were only about 600-800 of them. so mass produced no. artistic? hell no. its a fancy box cutter.

  • I'll go by a delica and endura instead.

  • with how the small blade almost curves around your finger it seems like it can only do the smaller cutting task. Poor pricing from spyderco. Would rather have a sage 2 every time.

  • I would never pay more that $50.00 for that knife. If it were hand-made, I would expect that kind of price. I still would not pay over $100.00 even if it was hand-made. Check with Jeff ( aka cutlerylover ). He loves Spiderco knives.

  • I just ordered one! Damn you for showig me this thing!LOL

  • way over priced. carbon fiber is expensive but not that expensive. especially when a sage is like 100 bucks. this should have n frn version for around 35.

  • Not worth the price. looks like a lable whore job

  • too much for this knife but i like it looks sick

  • You're not alone, I would LOVE to have a balance for a secondary EDC. But even 100 is too high for something that tiny. Yeah it has top grade materials, but damn, its a tiny little knife to be asking $130+.

  • I agree 100% with you sentiments on this little knife. The Balance is another one of those Spydies that looks quirky as hell but feels great in the hand. But, like you, I just can't see dropping $130 bucks for a knife with a 1" blade - even with carbon fiber. I'm going to hold off a bit and see how it sells - I'm guessing the price will hold down sales and a few months from now I might be able to pick one up at more resonable price... Good review, by the way.

  • It's a great looking blade but I truly can't see paying $120+ for it. For that price I'll go buy a military.

  • I was amazed at this knife when i saw it at the SFO. At first i didn't look at the price tag, and was expecting it to be no more then $70... NOPE! $150. I guess the only thing i can do is wait for the SS version to come out and hope it's priced like the SS cricket...

  • I though this was an awesome knife, until i saw the price tag at the SFO. I was expecting $70, but no $150 at the SFO. I guess the only thing i have left is the SS version that is in the works, but that probably won't be coming out any time soon...

  • Well, it's an interesting design, but I would think long and hard about what else is available to me for that $130. Can't blame Spyderco, really. You have an obligation to take the money the market is offering, and right now, the Spyder is hot.

  • CRAZY price. I didn't like it to begin with but now that I actually see its size it's waaaaaayyyyyy over priced

  • wow, such honesty for a salesman. i admire that, not the knife, though. good, but pricey.

  • 50 tops

  • you buying the name..i buy 200.00 shoes..i could buy the same for less but i buy the name, lol..

  • it's FUGLY

  • $130? That's like six Rat-1s. I'll take the Rat-1s.

  • @bladeops when are your terminator butterfly knives gonna be restocked?

  • Yes you are right, when you think what kind of knives you can pick up for that kind of money, Spyderco are totally taking this piss out of their customers! But Spyderco people will buy any kind of rubbish Spyderco knock out, and before you all complain I have a few Spydrco knives, but they also make some rubbish knives.

  • It looks like it's incredible knife. But the price... For 200$ it should be ZDP-189 not VG-10. And even then I probably won't buy it. Really honest video. Specially for the retailer.

  • i love bladeops' honesty.

  • Why dont u do anymore will it cuts?

  • its crazy like be barong

  • @masterdurchgriff not really, cus u could get something bigger and better for that price

  • 200+ MSRP for VG10, Carbon fiber and less than a few oz of materials? Yeah, manf'ing costs moneyg but something's wrong here....

  • When I first saw the balance I couldn't wait to get one. Then I saw the price. I don't get it either. I'd rather get an endura, a delica, and a ladybug and still have a few dollars left in my pocket. If spyderco comes out with a cheaper version though I will definately pick one up.

  • The problem is not that it is 'expensive' (wich actualy is a very subjective term) but that our currencies (Usd, euro,..) are devaluating so quickly that the high quality and luxury items are becoming harder to reach and this creates a true impression that everything is becoming surrealisticaly expensive.. In reality it is our currencies that are flawed

  • I can't agree more, great knife but I just don't see myself or anyone spitting out $200 for

  • I don't even want to hear about the profits they make on those...

  • i am not goin buy it

  • i just got a dragonfly. it rocks. i really like the design of the balance. i want one. buy it now. dont wait. if you really want one get it. some knives you buy because you need one for this or that. how many do you see that you just have to have. not many.

  • -- Way yonder more important things to buy!

  • Why don't u just wait and get the stainless steel version coming out which is half the price?

  • Not a bad looking knife, but for that price I'd rather pick up one of the lesser expensive Microtechs you have available. I don't mind collecting tacticals, but a keychain blade?

A knife that small begs to be in my pocket, and begs to see some serious use, so I'd rather spend less on something that is just as functional, if not more so, and would be more easily replaced.

  • You'll never see me buy that..

  • i wish people would stop reviewing spyderco knives its all you see on youtube im getting sick of it search for spyderco tenacious and youll see what i mean vs like a case swayback jack. spyderco sucks

  • @alfwok How does spyderco suck? 0.o

  • Another Ed Schempp bust. I wonder is Sypderco and Ed will ever figure out why his knives do not sell that well (ex. Kukuri, Barong, etc.). Interesting designs, good materials, and quality construction, but a $50 premium on the price just does not cut it for me.

  • i wouldnt pay $30 for that tiny keychain knife, i have no use for a blade that small, even if i did, not paying 3 figures for that...

  • With the success and price inflation of the cat and chicago I believe Spyderco thought there was a market for it. There probably is a handful of knives we have all paid to much for, besides what else are you going to spend it on. Great vid

  • its definitely not worth $100, for me i think that the price should be somewhat reflected on the size of it, i understand its carbon fiber but i know a site that i can get a 6X6 inch sheet at 3/8th's thick for like $30 i think and that covers like 6 or 7 knives that size, its a better steel but still, for that price there are plenty of better options at that price range, its an awesome looking knife and i do want it but that price man. 50-65 maybe even 70 is what it should be at really.

  • Sounds like your paying a lot for the spyderco name to me.

I would say $55-65 range would be more appropriate, I know its carbon fiber and VG10 but there really isn't that much material there, and for a few bucks more than its actual price you could get a spyderco police or para-military, not to mention the manix, endura, tenacious all way below that price for a hell of a lot more knife.

  • If the blade was 3 inches+ okay whatever, nice knife but that's too expensive for me. $100+ for a knife that size??? INSANE!

  • It's a really cool knife, but so what? There are lots of cool knives that don't cost half as much.

Dude, go buy a knife for a third that price and use the rest of the money to buy some groceries.

  • Realistically I'd say about $60-70 for it. I think the bulk of the price is from perhaps new machinery for a new design and royalities to Mr Schemp for his idea. Of course Carbon Fiber and vg10 are higher end materials. I mean the CF Sage 1 was going for $86 at one point.

  • damn that may be my new favorite knife i wanna get. perfect for me. i like small edc knives (i live and go to school in NY so its kinda necessary) and i love odd yet functional blades and everything about that is awesome...except the price. That would be my new and favorite edc for 55 dollars

  • Its Only VG-10 doesnt seem to be a good price point.DKG

  • $200, wow!!............. i mean WOW!!!

  • your paying for the high quality,

  • $25 max I would spend on it.

  • what a ripoff spyderco knives are not any better than any other company

  • id like 60$ for it, it looks like a really good quality knife, and u pay for quality but 200$ jesus fuck that!

  • I wanted this one till i saw the price too, too many other knives i need.

  • That is an awesome knife, I really want one, but I couldn't justify that either.

  • agreed

  • I'd pay $20 if it was standard steel and g10

  • the saddest part are people will buy it

  • It is a nice design for it's size, and I guess premium materials and construction. But I'd stick with a Victorinox pioneer for a small utility knife. You could even go with the pioneer harvester wich includes a "hawks beak" blade if you need the tip to have a sort of downward sweep. Way too high priced for my taste or budget. Despite that I still enjoy your videos, and think it's cool that you would be straight foreward with your opinion about the high price.

  • They forgot to put in the papers in their box stating their right to steal.

  • 200 is out insane

    100 is still out ragious

that would be like 50 maybe 75

    its just tiny

it looks awesome and everything but that is just insane

  • The Spyderco Balance is probably the Spyderco knife I like the lest. I see no real benefit to the size and shape and at that prize!!

You want something like this that's well made and dose not cost a car payment, look at the DAJO Adventure ASCENT or any of their other pocket knife line for a good work EDC. I love my Spydercos and save those for the big jobs.

  • if i was a knife company i could make something like that for $30 but it'd probably have kraton or g10 scales instead of carbon fiber

  • I agree. Very cool, but way overpriced. Make one out of G10 and 8Cr13MoV in the price range of the Tenacious and I'm all over it. Even an FRN version in the range of the Delica would be cool. Otherwise, not touching it.

  • I would compare this knife and spyderco to Oakley. Their products are made with high quality materials, but it comes at a price. That spydie hole is just so awesome and knife lovers know exactly where you got it and how much you paid for it. Same goes for us Oakley fashionistas, we can spot a "Monster dog", "M Frame" or "Gascan" from a mile away.

$200 is a lot but, if you love something and it brings a flutter to your heart every time, do it!

  • yeah thats def not worth that much money... you can get a sage cheaper :S

  • Woah... way to much money

  • Hm..

    Reminds me of the cat/chicago.

I think the chicago was about 50-60 and cat was 60-70? Those were great priced knives. It's definitely a cool knife but, I think the reason why it was premium priced was because it was designed by Ed, so they have to pay the premiums for having it designed by him... or something of that sort, lol.

  • Okay, so you pay about 90 +/- dollars for a sage, which is carbon fiber, AND CPM-s30v. So why am I paying 130 dollars for a knife with similar handles, and an inferior blade steel?!?!?! Plus, this knife uses less material because its smaller! I can't imagine spyderco will be able to sell to many of these. Perhaps they will make them with FRN handles.

P.S. Bladeops, did you get my earlier message about the kershaw I sent in?

  • Very cute, very nice design by Ed Schempp. In my country (France) the price tag is around 195€ ;( expensive IMHO but it have some HUGE cool factors. Is it a limited run or full release?

    By way of Reference a Dragonfly VG10 / G10 MSRP is 130$ a Urban VG10/G10 MSRP is 150$

Everything CF is quite expensive. So all in all ...

  • Wow... not worth 200.

  • BladeOps let them know, maybe they'll snap and drop the price. LOL

  • Its a limited run, thats what your paying for. If you wait around you will be able to get the same knife with a stainless steel handle much cheaper.

  • the knife is not 200 everyone dont worry, its about 130. yes this is a very small knife and i probably couldnt tell you why it is expensive as it is, but spyderco has so very many incredible deals i have no reason to be pissed about this one!

  • I was looking at this thing for about half a year. I completely agree with bladeops though.

  • would never pay 200$ for that.

  • It's built from quality materials, but what you can use it for? Opening boxes... "It's Spyderco, it's collectible, etc." COME ON!!! 200$!?!

  • "I love the knife just not the price" thats Spyderco's life story, thats my problem with them too I like some of their designs but the price is outrageous I can get a similar knife (size, material, value etc) from Cold Steel and pay half to less then half the price of most Spydercos

  • I have the same exact problem you all do. I wish I could own all of the Schempp knives cause I love his designs, all I own so far is a Barong. the only thing about that knife that might make it more expensive is the carbon fiber scales. the Delica and Endura use the same vg10 and you can buy those in the $50-60 range. by all means, lower the price and I'll buy one instantly.

  • That's a sweet knife, but i'd never pay that for a knife....

  • ... GAH!

    It hurts my soul.

  • very interesting blade for sure! price has been suspect before on specific spydercos, it comes down to supply and demand, spydercos tend to be extremely collectible as you know, sometiems they take advantage of that, as loing as they dont do it across their line its ok with me....the cheaper the better, but I feel this exact knife should be more like $80-$90 on the dealers price end...

  • Yea... spydieguys had it for almost 200 dollars, so I like your price better, but it is still overpriced and I will not be buying one. Thanks for the video.

  • That blade looks cool, but seriously, 200 bucks.

  • Firstards.
