Jason is my favorite pick using bassist, his style was amazing just wish there was more of him in the albums but i can see why he wasn't, losing a band mate the way they did has that effect. Cliff is my all time favorite and i like his solos better because of his effects and just how amazing he was. Rob is also a great player and anyone that says he's not is fucking stupid. Hope for more new music from metallica with more bass. RIP Cliff and respect to Jason and Rob.

I read your description and wholeheartedly agree. I cant speak for cliff, but IMO, Metallica really went downhill after he left. I don't know if he is what kept the band grounded and about the music, or if his bass playing effected the music just that much.
Either way Newsted is a great Bassist in his own right, regardless.
As for picking being harder as opposed to playing with fingers, most of my bass playing friends say its a matter of comfort and tone. Difficulty has little impact.

Jason is AWESOME!!!! He brought such an intensity to their live shows with his backing vocals and playing. I just wish Metallica would have let him contribute more to the music. I also totally agree with basssican that My Friend of Misery should have been an instrumental. Jason wrote a great riff and they should have extended on it.

Jason Newsted is my inspiration. I took up playing bass guitar because of him. I still wish he had not quit. robert is a good bass player I'll give that to him but I rather see Jason up there rockin with metallica. and there is nothing wrong with playing with a pick, I play with pick also. sure it looks cooler when you play with your fingers but screw it! In my opinion I think Jason has the image for Metallica not to mention the backing vocals. But Trujillo is technically an all around better bass player. James even said that Rob contributed more on DM than Jason did for his entire tenure in Metallica.
but if you think about it, they hazed him so i'm pretty sure that they didn't allow much of his input. Besides that, metallica changed after he left. They all changed their attitudes. So i would imagine that is why he didn't contribute as much.

Yeah, Flotsam and Jetsam are just amazing. Voivod are also great. But with Flotsam Jason did his best I think. He wrote most of the songs and the lyrics are just fantastic. the truth is that i first wanted to start playing bass after i watched the bass guitar doodle in cunning stunts. i really like his attitude on stage and the way he does backup vocals (oh yea, he played nice whiplash and seek & destroy at live shit binge and purge) but i get annoyed by his headbanging style and that my friend of misery.. i really like the song but this doesn't mean that he had to play the intro in every concert with metallica

Cliff was much better, I will say that right now, but there styles were very diffrent.
Cliff could almost be called lead Bass because how he played. Jason likes the low end while cliffwas more into high end solos.

-After Cliff died he wanted to enter because he was a huge fan.
-Metallica blamed him for Cliff´s death.
-They started making idiot pranks, jokes on him(wich never ended) and never let him contribute.
-They didn´t allowed Jason to have a side-project.
-He leaved, wich was good.
-Metallica was a big drawback for his huge talent.

i think jason has more personality than trujillo. and i like that. but dont get me wrong, i love trujillo, but jason could play allll over the fretboard and he has much better backup vocals. i wish he was still in metallica, but at the same time, robert is a piece of the metal monster, and i love him and jason for that.

I read your description and wholeheartedly agree. I cant speak for cliff, but IMO, Metallica really went downhill after he left. I don't know if he is what kept the band grounded and about the music, or if his bass playing effected the music just that much.
Either way Newsted is a great Bassist in his own right, regardless.
As for picking being harder as opposed to playing with fingers, most of my bass playing friends say its a matter of comfort and tone. Difficulty has little impact.

Jason is AWESOME!!!! He brought such an intensity to their live shows with his backing vocals and playing. I just wish Metallica would have let him contribute more to the music. I also totally agree with basssican that My Friend of Misery should have been an instrumental. Jason wrote a great riff and they should have extended on it.

Jason Newsted is my inspiration. I took up playing bass guitar because of him. I still wish he had not quit. robert is a good bass player I'll give that to him but I rather see Jason up there rockin with metallica. and there is nothing wrong with playing with a pick, I play with pick also. sure it looks cooler when you play with your fingers but screw it! Jason newsted is no doubt my favorite bass player. and metallica is always gunna be my favorite band no matter what. rock on..

In my opinion I think Jason has the image for Metallica not to mention the backing vocals. But Trujillo is technically an all around better bass player. James even said that Rob contributed more on DM than Jason did for his entire tenure in Metallica.

but if you think about it, they hazed him so i'm pretty sure that they didn't allow much of his input. Besides that, metallica changed after he left. They all changed their attitudes. So i would imagine that is why he didn't contribute as much.

u did a great job with this video, he was awesome with the bass, a beast at the backin vocals, and his solos were really badass man, I LOVE JASONS ATTITUDE, but c'mon, u cant say Trujillo will never be better than jason, cuz trujillo is the most talented and technical musician metallica ever had since cliff, just take a look at his job in DM man... it's just a matter of time that rob would write an awesome piece of music that would be at least as good as Cliff's Orion or Jason's MFOM. Yeah, Flotsam and Jetsam are just amazing. Voivod are also great. But with Flotsam Jason did his best I think. He wrote most of the songs and the lyrics are just fantastic. I love Metallica, but it's sad that they didn't let him do anything. Sad for Jason and also fucking sad for 'Tallica. I can't image how fucking great they would've been, if they had let Jase cowrite the songs.

the truth is that i first wanted to start playing bass after i watched the bass guitar doodle in cunning stunts. i really like his attitude on stage and the way he does backup vocals (oh yea, he played nice whiplash and seek & destroy at live shit binge and purge) but i get annoyed by his headbanging style and that my friend of misery.. i really like the song but this doesn't mean that he had to play the intro in every concert with metallica
