i'm a big fan of Pavement- i was aware of silver jews but not familiar with them. this reminds me of Leonard Cohen for some reason... will definitely buy one of their albums :)

I've just noticed that the chord progression is one chord away from being "Range Life" by Pavement. I think I like this song more, though. Range Life was always my least favourite Pavement single.

i think the trains work fine. remember 'trains across the sea. i don't think of 'humid downtown allies' at all when i tihnk of the silver jews. just the opposite, really.

While a train crossing the high plains is undeniably Americana its not really the type of Americana that I feel fits with the aura of Silver Jews. I think of humid downtown alleys somewhere within scent of the Mississippi.
