I'm not talking about buying fancy drum machines and ruining one's career for no reason....thats what Thom and Jonny did.Everything after the classic 2nd album(The Bends)...is horrible, pretentious nonsense.
Man, it's not easy to play/sing a song, especially a relatively simple & very "familiar sounding" one like Danny Boy with all those weird key changes. Props to this man for the whole work, very good job.
it takes a genius to write music like the beatles... but it takes something more to be able to understand it and explain it in a technical but understandable way
Because they enforced a dogmatic cultural hegemony on students for several generations. They basically ran all of the major grad programs in America, at least. If you weren't writing in a post-tonal, serial style, you wouldn't be taken seriously. Bernstein and Copland caught a lot of grief for writing "accessible" music.
It can be either. Most commonly it will be to a change to a different tonic, but you can modulate from tonic major to its parallel minor, and vice versa.
Clearly Macca and Lennon evolved wonderfully as composers, but to what extent was George Martin the real impetus for this - an expert teacher with a group of very enthusiastic students, who embraced classical music from both West and East.
music is simply beautiful, it's the most amazing magic i have ever stumbled upon. thank you for sharing these videos! i want to know more about music.
This guy is really good. Everything he's saying is dead simple for anyone who's played or studied music, but he's brilliant at explaining it for a general audience. I love how he sets up "Penny Lane", plays a bit of the song, and at the exact point where everyone will go "oh wow, I see what he means", we see him standing there with a look on his face like "you see what I mean?" If more music teachers were like this, we'd have more musicians.
he sounds like Ringo !

@capedcamish I didn't get the feeling that he is shitting on avant-garde but showing that the average music fan doesn't get it.

Is modulation simply a key change? Or is it the same tonic with a different type of key?
nickeax 2 years ago
It can be either. Most commonly it will be to a change to a different tonic, but you can modulate from tonic major to its parallel minor, and vice versa.

Even funnier, the crappy modulated version of Danny Boy sounds like it could be a Billy Joel song.

Haha... That modulating version of "Danny Boy" sounds magic to those of us with advanced ears.
rasputin63 2 years ago
Certainly more interesting than the traditional version :) The second and third modulations in that seem to work the best.
