  • Its amazing to think that this missed call, plus the kicked ball incident that lost MU a game to NU in 97, ended up benefitting the other team in both years in that they eventually shared a national championship. I can see how the "kicked ball" didn't get called but how CU got the extra down is beyond me. And how long do you think they would have reviewed that last play in today's game with instant replay?

  • @cdzmo1972 -

It is an amzing coincidence, and incredible "good luck" for both CU and NU. There is no way something like this would happen today. The guys in the replay booth would have "buzzed" the referee on the field and informed him of the down situation. Back in 1990, the only way the head referee could communicate with the press box was through a telephone set up on the sidelines, which you see in this video.

  • He lifted the ball over before he was down.

  • Although as hard it is to say Colorado deserved the game. He looked at the scoreboard Nd the enmey downed it so you cant take it back since the play was down.

  • And right after that, the classless Mizzou fans threw bottles and trash at the Colorado players...even though they were not the one's who made the mistake. Why did they cut the video clip before that happened? I guess we'll just forget about how the Mizzou fans acted and get upset at the Buffs, who were not at fault.

  • that god damn official had to have had something against missouri he just have had to you kidding me 5 fucking downs now that shit was a set up one of the all time worse calls ever in the history of football fuck that ref i hope he dead now fucking fool

  • The officiating mistake was made after the real 2nd down; a TO was called and the marker stayed 2nd down for the next play. Coach MacCartney saw the marker error during the TO and told the ref "It's 2nd down, we're going to run 3 plays."

Please name one coach in America who is going to go up to the ref, say "It's actually 3rd down, we're only going to run 2 plays." Coach Mac just took advantage of the error.

  • @Bradical26 That's true. This entire thing cries for perspective and a little less emotion. CU would not have downed the ball had they known it was really 4th down. Jay Leewenburg did know but was told to play center and keep his mouth shut. Mizzou fans are rightfully upset but let's also note that CU would not have run the same sequence had they known it. Therefore, it is pure conjecture who would have won had it played out right.

  • Let me make another point: my father was a football official, and he could not figure out how this happened because there are TWO officials that keep track of the downs, one with a clicker (like a baseball ump) and the guy with the sign.

I later read it was because the guy with the clicker decided the guy with the sign was right. I also read where Colorado's center told Charles Johnson they didn't have enough downs to run twice and spike.

  • cheaters never prosper my ass- what are we teaching our kids?

  • You know what's funny? The same CU fans who pass this off as a technicality would be LIVID if that clip hadn't been called to save them from Rocket in the Orange Bowl.

Which begs this question: does any time dumb enough to punt to the fastest player of all-time with the title on the line even deserve consideration as a number one?

  • @Maestrohbill Yes. They were the best team, played the toughest schedule.

  • @Bradical26 That's up for debate. Sorenson has CU with the #8 schedule and Ga Tech with #13. That's hardly a major difference. And let's not forget - CU had a loss and Tech didn't. The only reason CU got the nod was because - are you ready - they started the year #8 while Tech was unranked. I'm not knocking CU; I like them. But that whole thing stunk. To be fair time has changed my perspective but in light of neither team playing each other a split national title was the proper outcome.

  • How come only the students knew it was 5th down? The announcers? nope. The mizzou team and coaches? nope. Only the college kids storming the field! Dang Midwesterners and your politeness.

  • The coaches not knowing is the biggest "sin." The guy or gal doing the play-by-play transcription in the pressbox sure as hell knew. Why he/she didn't yell at someone to run up to the box where the Mizzou coaches were, and tell them that the refs and chain gang lost track of the downs is something I'll always wonder. I'll have to admit that I was at that game and didn't pick up on it.

  • One announcer did, but he wasn't sure about it. He assumed the ref knew his job.

  • @AmericanRuffian This would never happen today with replay. It didn't exist back then. ESPN did a show recently about it - and while it's still bad, it's somewhat understandable. Fifth downs have happened something like 5 or 6 times in NCAA history - but only 2 are remembered. The 1940 case was because the team forfeited when it had a long losing streak. If Colorado had been 2-8 in 1990, nobody but Mizzou fans would even remember this. But it played a major role in the national champion crowning

  • I think johnson did get in, but it was still a screw job what happened to missouri

  • Idiocy?

  • More like brain dead, especially for the head referee who was a high school math teacher!!!

  • Colorado sucks balls

  • CU head coach Bill McCartney didn't even have the decency (or guts) to shake hands with Missouri head coach Bob Stull after the game. Niiiice....

  • @54Snickers Bill McCartney is a saint, bite your tongue
