For a show that reviews movies, this is some AWFUL setup/production.
I mean, seriously, guys? What's going on with the white balance in one of the cameras? It's so off that it looks as though there's a blue filter/glass in front of the camera.
And what's with the hosts positions? This is no subtle thing, it's very annoying and amateur.
this film is so wildly overrated! I think critics felt like they HAD to like it because it is Scorsese's first animated feature and because the film is obviously a love letter to movies. I don't know what kid would like this to be completely honest.
I had the no idea the novel was about George Méliès until I looked up what the film was about, and I have a real love for early cinema and the like, now I'll definitely check out the book and the movie.

The Hugo kid for me has no presence, I couldn't feel any emotion from him. But I think he would be perfect on a Tim Burton movie. I would give this movie a 7.8 for the beauty on photography involved, I didn't quite fancy the story nor the development throughout the movie.
I give it a 9 because I didn't totally understand the second dream. The first dream I understand because it is a foreshadow but the second dream I don't understand.
I liked the movie.Great film. Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Christopher Lee. I didn't recongize the rest of the actors. The boy looks like the next Elijah Wood. The girl was great too.

You definitely need to figure this out, TYT and What the Flick, because this is not a good watch. Until then, if a reviewer hasn't seen the movie (Ben!), they do not need to be there sucking up precious direct camera space. I always enjoy What the Flick reviews, but I don't want to just listen to them.
I didn't see a single note, commercial, trailer, or nudge at this movie until someone mentioned "Hugo ramping up to be movie of the year", and was absolutely confused. Never heard of this movie up until that point, a week or two after the movie came out - Dunno HOW it'd get MOTY.
All, why are you filming from the sound-studio room? Try setting up your hosts like you have for the past several years, and throw out this angle (Unless you genuinely didn't have a tripod to put your camera on)
Great review, but the setup makes you feel like a peeper watching a conversation from afar. The viewer wants to be part of the conversation, not the back of Christy. Great review but the setup make it very disengaging.

The only way I can see to make this shot work is giving the cameraman a steady cam and have him walk around the set as a spectator watching a 3 way conversation.
Good of Ben to be the only one to correctly call the accent what it is: English. There is no British accent people, get it through your heads already. Even England has dozens of it's own accents.
And the 'awkward camera angles' don't bother me too much, just sayin.

@jdroker These guys are grossly underrating the film the 3d is amazing and the film plays as fantasy passion project by scorsese. I didn't like shutter island and was very cautious of hugo but this might be scorseses best film since the aviator, and easily the best film ever to be shot in 3d.
I'm "saving" the experience of watching proper 3D made by competent directors until The Hobbit. Yes, The Hobbit is being filmed in 3D from start to finish, and it is going to induce orgasms. P. Jackson even had people invent new technology specifically for this filmatisation. Do yourself a favour and search for "THE HOBBIT, Production Video" here on youtube. 4 videos are out already.

I will not be watching Hugo in 3D, because I want to "save" all the distilled awesomeness that can be had from watching 3D when in the hands of competent directors. And if peter jackson decides to put as much effort in the hobbit as he did with the lovely bones then we're going to be seeing amazing visuals and just plain and utter piece of shit of a movie. Jackson is a up and down director even king kong had a lot of weak stuff within it but was saved by the chemistry between andy serkis and naomi watts and the visuals.
Absolutely, P. Jackson is not a safe bet for a great movie. But, with a high budget and the best of the best working on the project, and many of them being total Tolkien geeks, I'm optimistic. He's earned some good will from the trilogy.

deniro played ace (rosenthal) really well; and if he didn't /need/ to act really superflous and different in order to play the role right - then so be it. Why should he compromise the sincerity of the portrayal just for the sake of being original and dramatic?

My problem by what you are saying is that you're lumping things into either capitalism or socialism. The world isn't black and white like that. You do realize that you can be for a progessive tax system and/or single payer healthcare and still be a capitalist. Have you ever heard of social democracy? Welfare capitalism? You are making the falacy that stuff like welfare and social programs are socialist, and that socialism always equals bad. Most capitalists believe in some wealth redistribution.

That's right it's not free market capitalism. The point isn't to strangle capitalism it's to do the stuff the free market can't do. Capitalism is great when it comes to creating wealth and incentives but if you're poor and can't afford healthcare, school, the basic essentials of life than its the governmets job to assist you. The point of welfare is to create opportunities for the poor so they can move up in the world. No one should be without healthcare or an education.

While the city houses have too keep everyone so they have a higher rating. It's not that Connies House is really any better. I'm "saving" the experience of watching proper 3D made by competent directors until The Hobbit. Yes, The Hobbit is being filmed in 3D from start to finish, and it is going to induce orgasms. P. I will not be watching Hugo in 3D, because I want to "save" all the distilled awesomeness that can be had from watching 3D when in the hands of competent directors. That is, instead of being amazed by jaw-dropping visuals in Hugo, I'm waiting until The Hobbit for my jaw to drop from amazing 3D visuals. Does that make sense? I haven't seen Avatar in 3D either. And if peter jackson decides to put as much effort in the hobbit as he did with the lovely bones then we're going to be seeing amazing visuals and just plain and utter piece of shit of a movie. Jackson is a up and down director even king kong had a lot of weak stuff within it but was saved by the chemistry between andy serkis and naomi watts and the visuals.

Absolutely, P. Jackson is not a safe bet for a great movie. But, with a high budget and the best of the best working on the project, and many of them being total Tolkien geeks, I'm optimistic. He's earned some good will from the trilogy.

@smaakjeks Yea i don't think peter would risk his reputation making this movie bad and some of the set videos i've watched have been very encouraging but you never know with peter, when the guy hits a home run it's amazing the lord of the rings movies are probably in the top 15 best fantasy films ever made and he made kate winslets career in heavenly creatures. But yea from what i've heard the script is great i just hope peter can use the same magic he used for the lotr trilogy.

2-Why the hell is Alonso blue? He's allover blue in almost every shot. Just look at 7:30
And for God's sake, just find three comfortable chairs, a regular table(not triangular), and a fixed wide angle that we can see everybod'y face so we can enjoy the show without having a headache. Is it so hard to ask?
