What exactly is Rakkasan?

It's a nickname given by the Japanese to the 101st. They say, that an interpreter had problems to explain to Japanese civilians what they were doing. He didn't knew the word for "Paratrooper", so he said in broken Japanese "Flying Umbrella Man" or Rakkasan. From that point on, the civillians called the paratroopers "Rakkasan". That's the story.

Chopping Charlie!!!! I was a Rakkasan 1993-1994 before re-enlisting to come to DC. I was under the Command of Lt. Colonel David Petraeus! I got to meet General Petraeus on Capitol Hill a few weeks ago & was proud to tell him I was a Rakkasan under his command in 1993!!!! Go 3rd herd!
