I'm in a YES tribute band, and this is the version of this song we play. Very awesome! Jon's voice still sounds great to this day. All the musicianship is still there.. Long live YES!!
That's YES!! I'll stay in the south side of the sky...no need to "Fly From Here". It's peculiar how THIS fans perception of the current "YES" appears to be so remarkably contrary to the rest of the band. Hiring a singer from a YES clone band who even resembles a younger Jon is ironic to say the least; especially for a "progressive" band. Obviously, there's more to Jon, and you can't replace him with a caricature.
steves tone is awesome in this video and im pleased to tell u that the epiphone version of his guitar is very similar to the gibson and only 300 pounds compared to over 2000 for the gibson apart from the pickups its an epic guitar and not made in china but south korea and ive used it for hard rock led zepp and deep purple covers and it works well very similar tone to a les paul but u can play it unplugged as well which is great
@theamazingzivmaster ha!!! ;) i used to watch that guy on TV! 'Now, I'm gonna put a tree over here by the lake. And right next to it, I'll put a few more smaller trees. The big tree needs some buddies.' he was great!
This is such an amazing video. It shows just how good these wonderful musicians are! I wish I could have been at this concert - it would likely have been the best one I have ever seen! I did see them live this year though and it wasn't too bad but not like this lineup.

AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... Heard today on satellite - I sat in my car listening - wow Yes (my favorite band) how mesmerizing and awesome. Now this is music!!!!!!!!!!!!
The musicianship is so much better than anything going today. It has been so great to spend my life listening to these guys. Gray hairs and all, and all of us still going strong!!
This is still one of my favorite songs to play from that album. The arrangements were just perfect. I'm glad that they were still able to perform it, even more than 7 years ago.
It makes me miss what these men were able to do in their day. We need more music and songwriting skills these days...
I feel very blessed to have grown up with these guys and others in my ears. So sad that the kids today won't have anything like these bands to grow old with. They are old friends that live within all those they touched....
@SparksMagoo Mate, I'm 18 and listening to Yes. There are even more amazing bands like this nowadays if anything. Stop living in the 70s/80s it was a good era, but music, when you find the good stuff, has progressed.
@slash1994 You are living in a dream-world if you think music has progressed since the 70's and 80s. In 1972, a band like Yes could score a big hit with a progressive rock track like "Roundabout" (this did happen). The idea that you would hear anything like that on the top 40 today is a joke.

Sad part is the industry doesn't seem to have room for musicians anymore. In the words of my son: "Seems like in your day, musicians performed to make music. Now they perform to make money."

I hit every Yes, Genesis and Todd Rundgren Tour from 1973 to 1985.
The intro of the early concerts was phenomenal. They would play classical music over the intercom and the lights would dim about 20 minutes before the music and then the concert would begin just like the beginning to YesSongs. Really incredible. Chris Squire, my God what a bassist. And to this day, I don't think anyone has ever topped "Yours is No Disgrace" as a better live song.

I would've liked to have seen Bill Bruford on drums here. Bill, however, is notorious for never playing the same hooks live as he did in the studio and secondly, I will never be able to figure out why he used those gawd awful electric drums with ABWH. His trademark snare shot was nowhere to be heard and would have been great to hear on SS of the Sky live.
Pure magic that I crave every day of my existence. These guys are unparalleled in my life. I never get tired of this music. True genius. The Fragile album was my first trip into fantasy land as a young teenager. I will never forget it. It is in my blood and will never escape.
@omegaman416 Excellent and I can completely relate. Fragile too was my entry to YES when I was ~11 yrs-old , then I saw them live at 12 in 1978, and I've never tired of their music. It has a timeless quality to it so it never sounds dated to me. Rick Wakeman is an awesome keyboardist which really shows in this video. They're all great & this concert was tops.
@Grendelmonster8u Argh...Steve Howe too. His guitar work here is impressive as usual. I saw the current line-up of YES last summer (2010) and they were still great. Seeing Jon Anderson alone in a couple of weeks.
This is the best YES lineup. I am still hopeful that in time (if they don't wait too long) that Yes can reunite with this group again. Maybe I'm being sentimental, but this group is magical and moments like this will never happen again in music with artists like Brittany Spears and Justin Timberlake! Ugh :( Music has declined so badly in the last 30 years...It makes this look all that much better.
While exploring the tide pools with friends on some really good acid around Palos Verdes back in the 70's, this song flowed in my head along with We Have Heaven. These two songs became part of my soul that afternoon. YES...
I am a Korean who grew up in Okinawa with all the western influence that came with US troops stationed there during the Viet Nam War. Local Radio Station for GIs turned me on to many rock music. Yet Japanese were very receptive to these progressive rock. ELP, Yes, PFM, etc. When I came to US in 1975 the one of the first bands that I saw was Yes. I believe it was 1976 and Yes was billed with Peter Frampton. It was Relayer tour. It just blew my mind. I did miss Rick, he was replaced by Moraz.
and YET..imagine.. there are legions of devoted worshipers ( blind as WELL as deaf) that believe with all that they are that Rush is the greatest band in the world and of all time ( and these are actual QUOTES).. LOL.. beyond belief! That Geddy the Tucan has the greatest voice in music and that peart is ( and i quote) the greatest drummer in the world and a "god"...LOL..NO exagerations here!!! and that REAL bands like YES,GENESIS,PFM etc pale in comparison to this "all girl trio" that is LAME
The prof can't really work up the energy for the kick-ass, rocking bits anymore; on more understated pieces, like this one, he is at his best. The guy is the freaking Wolverine of the guitar!!
My fellow Yes fan....I do not know if you have seen Yes-Lite before....I have in 08 when it was supposed to be until Jon was better....the show lasted 90 min., and had no magic!! Jon Anderson is Yes. I've seen Yes 12 times, and Yes-lite once....never again. Just fyi...A.W.R. Jon, Rick and Trevor are recording either the summer of 11, or spring of 12, and touring. Can Not Wait To See Jon sing his songs again, with true YES members. Hope you enjoy the concert though.
@RICHARDTRICHMOND "Yes-lite." Perfect! Saw them, too....and you're correct....the notes were there, but the magic was lost. Not even a full moon rising over the Jones Beach stage during CTTE could fulfill Jon's absence. It actually might have made it even more noticeable.
@TasmiaMallor JON IS YES!!! He's the only reason I could love all their incarnations (except the Drama one)
I remember Trever Horne making snide remarks about changing the "wimpy" sound of Yes back in 1980, right before SLAUGHTERING all their songs on King BIscuit Flour Hour...He was never heard from again!
@mullah06 Never heard from again? He went on to become one of the worlds best producers, working with loads of diffrent bands. In fact, I'd go so far as to say Mr Horn was an integral ingredient in the sound of 80's pop music
@neil73 True that he even did some prod work on Yes works but still, I heard those snide remarks on King Biscuit and it really PMO, his vocals with Yes SUCKED live; when's the last time you heard that wimpy voice of his, and Jon STIL KICKS ASS! My apologies to Jon 'cos I know he doesn't really like people to say stuff like this...I can grudgingly say Trevor wasn't bad on the Drama STUDIO recording, but live? No can do kimosabe!
Saw Yes for the 1st time in Minneapolis-St. Paul in '74 while they were recording Yessongs. Then again in hmmmm, '03 or 04 in Philly (great center theater seats!) and in Camden, NJ (where I turned on a new generation in the form of my nephew to Yes). Also saw a lot of tours in between. If it is not this combination of artists (Anderson, Wakeman, Howe, Squire, White) it is not really Yes. That is just my humble opinion. I love these guys. PEACE!
Was just r watching the union live performances. 0 scene performance, charisma or enjoyment of performing their music. So nice to hear this after just listening to that. The union album = the worst crap yes ever made. Good that they realized that union of all musicians was a bad idea, too many cooks.
This however is genious. I just love how they actualy enjoy this. Just watch Squire 8:55 it just gives me the chills. I wish I could have as much fun and happiness as him performing this song.
Rick Wakeman is the key(board) master. ZUUUUUUUUUUL! They are a fine tapestry, each thread woven intricately with the others. This is the music I want to become part of when I revert to a ball of energy after my demise.
normaly when a band plays live the song tempos are right on or a little fast, but these guys are playing this song a little slow. they must wake up? great show anyway :)
Very rarely performed live. To my knowledge this is the first I know of it. Lovely harmonies at 4.00 in (Chris showing his choirboy skills).. Takes me back to my cherished youth. Bought the bluray as one of my desert island discs.
possibly one of the most mystical and spine-chilling songs ever written by Yes. It's amazing to hear all these originals playing together and keeping true to the original sound.
Chris Squire and John Entwhistle were two bassists who figured out how to get their instrument out front and center and were an important part of each groups songs. I actually feel Squire is probably the best in playing his bass like a regular guitar....unbelieveable bass lines...This is one of my favorite Yes Songs, and to me was part of the last great albums they produced..1973 then gave us Passion Play, Close to the Edge and Quadrophenia...all too long, overdone, and no longer listenable.
I agree that Fragile was perfection incarnate, but I remember when the"Close to the Edge" LP was first released and how we all sat in someone's basement, totally mesmerized by the journies these guys took us on. Overblown and taking itself a little too seriously yes, but still seared into audio memory as phantasmagoric, epic works of sound. Hard to find contemporary music that fills the void left by Yes and co.
@TheLilithFair Yes, I agree with you and am sorry I didn't give that album equal billing..I remember standing in line with the overblown Tales from Topographic Oceans came out. They lost me until the 80's.
@TheLilithFair "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge" cannot be matched! You are correct in stating that it's hard to find contemporary music that fills the void left by Yes. It simply can't be done!! What a challenge! I saw them in concert twice...I couldn't talk for at least an hour afterwards. BOTH times! They were simply MAGICAL!! No disrespect to Pink Floyd, Santana, Rush, or any other of those amazing, musically talented ICONS. YES stands alone.
@TheLilithFair To me, most Yes albumns are modern day masterpeices. Are they rock?, jazz? "new age"? They cannot be copied easily. They also have a spiritual dimension as well it seems. There is not anyone today in the music industry that compares to them. Especially talent wise. Steve Howe and R. Wakeman..Chris Squire etc. were and obviously still are at the paramount of great music.
I would never see yes again without Jon Anderson.I saw them once with benoit, it just wasnt the same and they put the tour together to quickly without enough rehearsel and ricks son cant play like him.So there you go, 2 members missing never again to a band I've loved .Someone made a comment on here that chris squire says no to Jon coming back.
This is fucking awesome! Remember, this track was dropped from the live set in the old days. And just like that, they picked it up again 30 years later. And I mean, just watch and listen to that jam at the end, with Howe and Wakeman duelling like fire in a blizzard.
What can I say??? Love this band with all of my heart. I'm glad I saw this particular configuration before the latest line up, although the new line up has its merits. I wish it could all come back together just one more time because that's what makes sense. I couldn't help but compare this version to the latest. C'mon guys from Yes-how can the difference be denied?
Absolutely incredible!!! The test of time and excellence is impeccable here!!! This is absolutely one of the most talented bands of all tme if not the most talented.
Original, innovative, refreshing, creative, stimulating, beautiful, melodic, balanced, exciting....these are just some of the qualities of Yes during the time of this song.
I just seen yes at jones beach and the new singer cant even come close to jon anderson , to much of a french accent when he sings , cant deal with it . Come back jon please get well for at least one more go around u guys are the best . P.S. TURN IT UP A BIT AT THE CONCERTS NEED TO FEEL IT MEN !
I'll go further. Yes needs Jon and Rick. Ricks son - Oliver? - looks like him but can't play like the old man. I recently saw that John wants back in now that he is healthy but Chris says no.
I liked the Drama and 90125 years but they were not YES years. ABWH rocked.
Saw YES this past summer. It was one of the worst concerts I had ever seen. Steve Howe was fantastic, but the rest of the group SUCKED. I had seen YES several times before in the past 20 years, so I was quite disappointed.
@jeannelovesjon1 CHRIS AND STEVE GOT RID OF JON... THEY CANT REPLACE HIM.. YOU CANT REPLACE THE MAN!!! JON ANDERSON!!! THE VOICE OF YES!!! HOPE FOR A ..JON, RICK AND TREVOR PROJECT THAT IS IN THE WORKS FOR 2011.!!!! I SAW THE TRIBUTE YES IN 08... HAHA THERE IS NO YES WITHOUT JON ANDERSON!!!! JON CAN'T SING ANYMORE........ CHECK OUT HIS SOLO TOUR ..... THE MAN CAN SING ,,,,, CAN SING.....CAN SING................... LOVE JON ANDERSON... JON ANDERSON IS THE MAN!!!!
@RICHARDTRICHMOND Yes, Jon is #1!!!!!! I saw Jon at the Milwauukee County zoo on August 21! It was just Jons beautiful voice and his acoustics. I was right in the front row and it was awesome!!!!!! The whole concert is here on YouTube. Check it out! I can here myself yelling love you Jon! Your awesome! HA HA! The other members of Yes betrayed Jon so bad by replacing him with a want to be Jon! Big mistake! Good for Jon for doing his own thing!
really? really!?! mushroooooms ! this is perfection! words dont work here blaaaaaaaaah, just amazing - early twenties all of em- only song white sticks closely to what bruford composed - just slow shroomie funk - laaa laaa lala , laa laa lala , laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.... and feeeedback lots of feedback, seasoned distortion, and the mooog- omg get a contact high from this song - oh yea and "feel warm when you die" who writes stuff like that??!! 03 great tour revealing science of god, too:)
Agreed. Absolutely brilliant. I love how Jon moves as he strums during the amazing Howe-Wakeman cataclysm towards the end. He's like a medium with all this powerful positive force flowing through him and from him. Like a mortal angel.
Howe's guitar vs. Wakeman's minimoog. Nothing can compare to either. I wish I had made this tour, but I was only 12 in '03 and didn't have the same appreciation for music that I do now.
Seven years since this live performance...i hope they plan to hold a 45th and 50th reunion tour(s). How long can they keep their skill levels so high? I guess as long as I can ride a bike. Mississippi River Festival in the open air at SIU back in the summer of '75 was a good live rendition, too. That was 35 years ago. What band can match such longevity? Only the 'Grateful Dead'!
I didn't think they could do this piece better than the album version, but this video surpassed it. The dueling guitar and Moog exchange at the end even sounded a bit like one of the wives of Henry VIII. Incredible job, and excellent audio. Great job, guys!
This song is Jon Anderson at his compositional best. All the images (of the mountains) set to words & music! And then, on came Steve, Rick, Chris and Bill to pump up the arrangement, give it wheels and send it barrelling down the tracks to become a monster of a piece of music that will never be equaled...certainly by nobody this side of Andromeda. Led Zepplin and Kansas are the only ones who are worthy to sit down with them and drink a beer.
OMG!!!! ;) this is great!! excellent live version! sound is perfect! this is why i love these guys so much!! i just wish they would bring Jon back.

and YET..imagine.. there are legions of devoted worshipers ( blind as WELL as deaf) that believe with all that they are that Rush is the greatest band in the world and of all time ( and these are actual QUOTES).. LOL.. beyond belief!

RICHARDTRICHMOND 10 months ago
@RICHARDTRICHMOND "Yes-lite." Perfect! Saw them, too....and you're correct....the notes were there, but the magic was lost. Not even a full moon rising over the Jones Beach stage during CTTE could fulfill Jon's absence. It actually might have made it even more noticeable.
TasmiaMallor 9 months ago
@TasmiaMallor JON IS YES!!! He's the only reason I could love all their incarnations (except the Drama one)
I remember Trever Horne making snide remarks about changing the "wimpy" sound of Yes back in 1980, right before SLAUGHTERING all their songs on King BIscuit Flour Hour...He was never heard from again!
mullah06 8 months ago
@mullah06 Never heard from again? He went on to become one of the worlds best producers, working with loads of diffrent bands. In fact, I'd go so far as to say Mr Horn was an integral ingredient in the sound of 80's pop music
neil73 8 months ago
@neil73 True that he even did some prod work on Yes works but still, I heard those snide remarks on King Biscuit and it really PMO, his vocals with Yes SUCKED live; when's the last time you heard that wimpy voice of his, and Jon STIL KICKS ASS! My apologies to Jon 'cos I know he doesn't really like people to say stuff like this...I can grudgingly say Trevor wasn't bad on the Drama STUDIO recording, but live? No can do kimosabe!

Saw Rick in NYC in 1975; great keyboardist, him and Keith.

PEACE!

It's so cool to watch prog bands perform live, makes you appreciate how truly talented each individual musician is.
OfficialChokmah 1 year ago

I can't hear Jon's acoustic! :(

The solo war between the heavyweights of Howe and Wakeman is stunning.

Very rarely performed live. To my knowledge this is the first I know of it. Lovely harmonies at 4.00 in (Chris showing his choirboy skills).. Takes me back to my cherished youth. Bought the bluray as one of my desert island discs.
yzerbloke 1 year ago
possibly one of the most mystical and spine-chilling songs ever written by Yes. It's amazing to hear all these originals playing together and keeping true to the original sound.
And Rick Wakeman is a badass. Just saying...
evolutionist79 1 year ago
Chris Squire and John Entwhistle were two bassists who figured out how to get their instrument out front and center and were an important part of each groups songs. I actually feel Squire is probably the best in playing his bass like a regular guitar....unbelieveable bass lines...This is one of my favorite Yes Songs, and to me was part of the last great albums they produced..1973 then gave us Passion Play, Close to the Edge and Quadrophenia...all too long, overdone, and no longer listenable.
theqman1956 1 year ago
@theqman1956 Close To The Edge was very listenable compared to the real 1973 YES album, "Tales From Topographic Oceans".
ChevKen 1 year ago
@ChevKen yes...I agree, and almost forgot about the close album...Tales, and Relayer were awful...
theqman1956 1 year ago
@theqman1956
TheLilithFair 1 year ago 43
@TheLilithFair Yes, I agree with you and am sorry I didn't give that album equal billing..I remember standing in line with the overblown Tales from Topographic Oceans came out. They lost me until the 80's.

@TheLilithFair
So true, I concur!
SpicyCajunHoney 10 months ago
@TheLilithFair "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge" cannot be matched! You are correct in stating that it's hard to find contemporary music that fills the void left by Yes. It simply can't be done!! What a challenge! I saw them in concert twice...I couldn't talk for at least an hour afterwards. BOTH times! They were simply MAGICAL!! No disrespect to Pink Floyd, Santana, Rush, or any other of those amazing, musically talented ICONS. YES stands alone.
jabnhook2 10 months ago
@TheLilithFair To me, most Yes albumns are modern day masterpeices. Are they rock?, jazz? "new age"? They cannot be copied easily. They also have a spiritual dimension as well it seems. There is not anyone today in the music industry that compares to them. Especially talent wise. Steve Howe and R. Wakeman..Chris Squire etc. were and obviously still are at the paramount of great music.

I'll go further. Yes needs Jon and Rick. Ricks son - Oliver? - looks like him but can't play like the old man. I recently saw that John wants back in now that he is healthy but Chris says no.

The whole concert is here on YouTube. Check it out! I can here myself yelling love you Jon! Your awesome! HA HA! The other members of Yes betrayed Jon so bad by replacing him with a want to be Jon! Howe's guitar vs. Wakeman's minimoog. Nothing can compare to either. I wish I had made this tour, but I was only 12 in '03 and didn't have the same appreciation for music that I do now.
stalrunner 1 year ago
