at least better than Melbourne trains, Australia, always delays, problems with rail tracks and hidden frults which they dont tell the public about it!
I noticed the tall gaijin. One thing I learned in Japan and I was warned by my Japanese friends, is NOT to wear your backpack in your back when you're in a crowded train. Wear it in the front because that saves space and allows more people in. I didn't realise that even when my Japanese friend very indirectly told me to remove my backpack. I didn't. What a shame. Now I know why he asked me to (he didn't explain clearly).
Them: you want in? me: No nigga. Them: Suit yourself.

So, when travelling in Japan with your backpack, wear it in the front on crowded trains. It's polite protocol.
