This is a refreshingly different contrast (Stark ...even) to the Emma Kirkby/James Bowman/Acad. Anc Music version which has been the awesome standard for years....and I (and many others) think that the recent Vivica Genaux/ Sabina Puertolas/Les Talens Lyriques is simply the best....an AMAZING! perfomance, probably the best ever recorded....(so far)
I like the solemn pace, and stark orchestration of this. This is one of the best Three ....thanks so much for posting this...HARMONICO101

The pizzicato bassline in the continuo sounds like tears dropping on the ground. Reminds me of the Erbarme Dich in Bach's Matthew Passion which also sounds like tears. Heart rending stuff once you make the connection.
Pergolesi died when he was twenty-six, so there aren't a lot of compositions by him. If he had lived longer and composed more he would be better known.
Definitely the best Stabat Mater I have heard... and I think I now have even more respect for Alessandrini and the Concerto Italiano than I did when I head your upload of the Brandenburg Concertos.
Truly exceptional sound colour of the violins - and voices of course - in the opening movement! Really prepares for a great work and a great rendition...
Can anyone name the ode to joy contada by JS Bach? I heard it at church today and wish I could find it! Please tell me where I can find it... very much appreciated!
Que obra tan bella y triste, espero con ansias escuchar a la orquesta de camara de Leon Guanajuato (de donde soy), ellos la interpretaran el proximo jueves en un templo muy antiguo de aqui, ahora la disfrutare aun mas...Saludos
Yes, it's a little slow, but it's a great interpretation!!!!
The picture isn't scary...it's simply wonderful! It's "the dead Christ supported by Maria and John" by Giovanni BELLINI (1460). You can see it in the "Pinacoteca Brera" in Milano, Italy
I believe that had he not died so young, his accomplishments would have surpassed that of W.A. Mozart. I mean, even the maturity of his compositional style when he wrote this was greater than Mozart's own at this age.
Thanks HARMONICO101. Your videos have shown me a lot about the Baroque repertoire and gotten me to like some period performance. This recording is different (I think even by Baroque standards) especially the small accompanimant, but its great.
I found two CDs with this Alessandrini/ Mingardo/ Bertagnolli recording of the Pergolesi Stabat Mater. One CD also featuring the Vivaldi, the other also featuring the Scarlatti Stabat Mater. Do you know if the Pergolesi recording is the same on both CDs? Thanks in advance.
The performances are the same. The version with the Pergolesi and Vivaldi is a special, cheaper compilation. Personally, I recommend this one because it has my two favorite Stabat Maters on one disc.
I really thought that Scholl was the most appropriate voice for the Pergolesi Stabat Mater, but I was totally wrong. Thank you again for posting and your reply. I already ordered this Disc at amazon.
Such a touching piece ever written in latin. Shame Pergolesi died from Tuberculosis at age 26.
Poor dude.

Very beautiful.
I had this on (I seem to remember) a double album (pristine heavyweight vinyl). Original pressing.
Somebody stole it in 1995
Whilst I curse their very soul for the theft...
I at least admire their taste...

This is by far the best version in my opinion. Rossini's is nice, so is vivaldi's. Haydn's...kinda weird. Palestrina...eh..

Indeed, it is way slower than many interpretations, but it is very emotional and flowing I think.

It's purely a matter of getting used to the tempo. Once you do, you will feel how brilliant this recording is.

why is Pergolesi so underrated?...
McQuackor 3 years ago 42
He wrote very little music and died young. This is his great masterpiece that was hailed as genius after his death, by his contemporaries.
HARMONICO101 2 years ago
@McQuackor
because he died at 26...
if he hadn't, I believe we would be talking about a "Mozart" by now
