Actually, Gaza citys stats did improve in this timeperiod. In 1957, Egyptian president Gamal Nasser made a number of reforms in Gaza, included expanding educational opportunities and the civil services, providing housing, and local security forces.
But all this went to hell after the Israeli occupation in 1967. In addition Egypt or Jordan never claimed they wanted to occupy theese territories forever, but merely trying to keep IDF and the newly declared state of Israel at bay.

But if you study ancient history closely, you'll see they actually moved, and when they returned to palestine, it was inhabited, so the moved again to return later, for war and havoc.
But to take more recent history. The population of Palestine in 1850 had about 350,000 inhabitants, 30% of whom lived in 13 towns; roughly 85% were Muslims, 11% were Christians and 4% Jews.

I can help you understand by this, In the war in Vietnam, American soldiers couldn't even trust women and children because the women would even strap a grenade onto their babies in order to wipe out the soldiers. True enough that not every muslim is like that, but how can the soldier know he/she isn't.
