Great question. You want to keep the bow just a bit to one side of the waves to keep the seas from slamming into the bow and breaking onto the boat. This can cause a lot of damage to deck gear. Ships also use this strategy. When I drove ships for the Coast Guard, we used this technique in North Atlantic winter in 25-30 foot seas. The vessel rides up with the waves instead of having them break aboard.
