does nick patrick have to flop on the mat like a wet fish, and wave his arms around when hes counting like an angry pentioner!? its so irritating to watch.
Rotunda may have lost the match, but he subsequently audited Sting, there were some major 'irregularities' and Sting ended up with a huge tax-bill. One way or another Rotunda will always get you.
Being from NY, I pretty much had WWF wrestling shoved down my throat for most of my childhood. In 1989 NWA World Wide was broadcast on WPIX at 2 a.m. on Friday nights/saturday morn. And caught every episode i could, including the show with clips of this title change. I scared my parents out of their sleep when I hsaw that Sting beat Rotunda for the belt. Long story short, Great great post. Thank You.
I wasn't born when this match happened. But I have a bunch of NWA/WCW tapes that my dad gave me. I was born in 1990 when Sting won his first World Heavyweight Title. I was always a fan of WCW when I was a little kid. I never cared for WWF. And I don't care for WWE either. I think the reason I liked WCW more is because of two reasons. Sting, And the War Games.
@jet32009 i agree with you 101%. There was nothing lilke WCW back during these times. I was 14 when this match happened and I can remember watching this with my Dad.
1990 was the year of both Sting and Ultimate Warrior when they became World Champions. Ultimate Warrior beat Hulk Hogan for the then
WWF title while holding the I-C title and Sting beat Ric Flair for the NWA/WCW World title. Sting won PWI Wrestler of the Year and Inspirational Wrestler award while the Hogan/ Warrior match won PWI Match of the Year.
However, this match was a bit of bull. The conditions for the 10 thou was if someone could beat Rotunda within 10 minutes. That was the deal. Sullivan claimed to have found a loophole that in any Television Title match, the belt shall only be on the line for the first 10 minutes of the match. This match was well over 10 minutes. I loved the NWA though.
so ironic the roads Sting and his former partner the Ultimate Warrior took to success...Warrior won the I-C title in the WWF when the Honky Tonk Man made a similar challenge to anyone who could beat him...then they both went on to beat legends to win the World Heavyweight title in 1990...I LOVED Sting back then...and this was when the World TV title meant something
i vaguely remember watching this when i was a kid, my brother and cousins were into wrestling big time back then, (but wasnt every kid) Then the next day (4/2/89)my dad hooked up two tvs side by side so we could watch Clash of the Champions & Wrestlemania 5
Sting has learned from the right guys such as Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham, Mike Rotundo, Eddie Gilbert, Terry Taylor, Bill Watts, etc. That's why I say that out of all the face-painted guys, Sting was the one who was going to go to the top countless times.

WCW was about Wrestling. At the time WWE was more about goofy characters, and now it's more bad acting.

it does look like it says AWA, but it says NWA. They just fancied it up to make it look different.

excuse me if im wrong but why is it in an "AWA Ring"?
BillieStingJean 3 years ago
Actually it's an NWA ring. The ring skirt is one that they had in Jim Crockett Promotions (NWA) back in 1986.
bluedevil71 3 years ago
you must not had watched wrestling back then. On short commercials the single letters would come together to make the nwa sign in 86, 87, 88, 89
