Admiral Lutjens refused to give Hitler the nazi party salute when he met him. He gave the traditional naval salute. There were some good men in the german navy. Sad they served in such an awful cause, but you don't get to pick where you are born.
Admiral Erich Raeder met with Hitler just prior to the war, advising him the Kriegsmarine was not ready for war, and pressed for more surface warships. Hitler refused, whereupon Raeder said to his staff, "It is not ours, now, but to die gallantly."
Raeder received life-in-prison at Nuremberg. Of course, the war criminals Churchill and "Bomber" Harris, neither of which knew a civilian target they did not desire to annihilate, are heroes.
They tried hard but failed to make their case. Donitz was not responsible for any crimes against humanity and was never even charged with any. The only thing he was convicted of was waging unrestricted submarine warfare which every other warring power also did. British and American military officers were appalled at his conviction and said so openly and repeatedly. His only real "crime" was being on the losing side.
@grvolans The russians sank a passenger ship loaded full of civilian refugees fleeing the wanton rape and murder the Red Army dealt to any civilians in their path. This sinking resulted in the single greatest loss of life at sea in history. They also sank a clearly marked hospital ship packed full of wounded soldiers and civilians. So obviously they could not have thought sinking passenger ships was a crime since none of theirs were ever charged...
Admiral Doenitz is an innocent man and this indictment in Nuremberg is BULLSHIT.Even Chester Nimitz testified that he recieved the same orders as Doenitz. He has nothing to do with dead camps or war crimes and his wolf packs were fantastic in battle with the record in sinking enemy ships. He spend 10 years in prison for NOTHING. U-BOATS FOREVER !!!
Hitler was an idiot, everyone in the kriegs wanted more uboats...they knew it....capital ships where pointless waste of material look what happen to tirpinz and bismarck and the A.carrier.....all waste...v-1 waste v-2 waste...should have built planes and u-boats instead of all this crap and fuck the atlantic wall too
Doenitz should NEVER be lumped in with people such as Himmler, Heydrich, Keitel, etc. He was a sailor, pure and simple. He served his country. The ten years he recieved for war crimes...if there is even such a thing...completely negates the verdicts handed down at Nuremberg. He, among all the other defendants, was the only one who didnt have blood on their hands. He was a good, fair, and just man! As a former American submariner, I salute you Grand Admiral.
@dieritterkreuz44 i agree with you he never set the policies only carried them out, and as a loyal soldier he followed them. and during wartime its extremely hard to speak up and oppose the established political power. (e.g.hitler) like in america(was there really a debate whether there were wmd's in iraq?) which general spoke up and said hey iraq did'nt have anything to do with this if we go in there we'll basically be murdering people?
@dieritterkreuz44 Doenitz was not the only one unjustly subject to "victors justice." von Manstein, Raeder, von Kleist, and Walther Funk all were only guilty of being on the losing side of the war
@dieritterkreuz44 dont forget, if it wasnt for Adm. Nimitz "backing him" at the Nuremburg trials, he wouldve hung too. Adm Nimitz used similar tactics against the Japanese and admitted he learned some of the prowling tactics Doenitz used on the British to his advantage.
@dieritterkreuz44 I agree with you. I come from a strong Naval family. I almost joined the RN, My father was in the RN, our family dates back to Lord Nelson who is in our family tree. Doenitz wasn't a real Nazi. He was a Naval man doing his job but for a nation with a crazy man in power and an insane ideology. In actual fact he was a damn site more intelligent than the real Nazi's were. He knew we had Enigma but Hitler wouldn't listen!
