I hate to be a killjoy, and I love Stan and his music, but there has never been any independent confirmation of this - not from any (if any) survivors, rescuers or any other source. The citation in Wikipedia leads to a story only that he died of smoke inhalation.
I used to hear this as a little kid as a regular part of the WFMT show "The midnight special", along with the Leadbelly version of "the midnight special" and an amazing counter-tenor singing "you've got to cross that lonesome valley" All of those are still my favorites. Thanks SO MUCH caleb for posting this beautiful, heartfelt piece!
we sang this all the time out west ... drove the mainlanders fucking nuts so we told them fly to yer jesus before we pucked their teeth down their throats and made them look like cry babies lol it was awesome cause the bar made most of it's money when this song came on
While unloading drill ppe on a rig full of Newfoundlanders I started siging this as a lark, well next thing you know there was 8 of us singing on the drill rig.. the company man said he aint never seen anything like it but loved it.. accapella , sounded pretty good too
Don't be so hard on UbiDuboi... He was paraphrasing what Stan said to his folky buds in Friends of Fiddler's Green. From the Stan site: "When Stan first sang 'Barrett's Privateers' for these guys, he reportedly said "suck on this, you limey bastards!".
heard this covered by weddings parties anything (Australian band) and The Men They Couldn't Hang (English) Its great to finally hear the original. The wpa version is definately worth a listen!!!
Outstanding!!! Who cares about squinting when you can see and hear the MAN and his mates belt out this tune like they actually were part of Barret's crew!!!
I introduced this at a bar one night in my town along with The Glenworple Highlanders. Now I wish I hadn't, I've heard it enough being sung by drunks. Stan, ok, I can listen to him anytime, a bunch of drunken idiots, no. *sigh*
stan rogers is a p i m p! my dad spent months in the arctic when i was a kid and all he listened to was stan rogers, we are not canadian but i still admire the shit out of him! he better get on the canadian hall of fame cause he fuckin deserves it!
Stan used to play a little place in NH called "the Folkway" where I MC'd for a short time in the early 80's. I shared some frustration with others here looking for "Stan" not "Stan covers", fine though many may be...so I lifted this from his site, hoping a link to the "buy-it" page would give license so to speak.
Great shanty. Check out the Irish Descendants version, they do it justice.

The best song in the history of music.

Why can't the other versions of this song use this harmony? It's much nicer, IMHO.

The greatist (well, maybe in the top five, because we have had several) Canadian folk singer.
But, today (June 2, 2008) is the 25th anniversary of his untimely death. Oh... what he may have accomplished!
