And BTW health insurance companies aren't a monopoly seeing as how there are more than one. They don't act like a monopoly because every private insurer issues different prices. They all have to take into account their own personal marginal costs in order to maximize profits. Therefore, if you want price to go down so more people can get insured you need to increase the number of competitors in the industry. A gvt. plan would greatly disrupt a whole industry and cost millions of jobs.

I agree we shouldn't just throw money at the problem but we should use incentives (not through tax payers) through various tax credits to help companies go green. The bank bailouts are disputable. Most economists say that if we hadn't bailed out the banks we would be a in a depression right now because of the enormous ripple effect. I don't know about that though... Socialized medicine and the stimulus were/are stupid though.

what we really need is the government to simply regulate some of the insurance companies so they can't use unethical practices (like dropping clients once they get sick) and get rid of the 1945 law that made insurance companies immune to anti-trust laws. All we need to do is get more and new health insurance companies entering the industry (it is extremely profitable but the current companies have a stranglehold) and that will lower prices and make it easier to get service.
insurance companies don't set the prices of health care, they set the prices of insurance. The health care providers are the ones who set prices, and they peg their prices to the highest amount they can recieve from insurance companies, which is higher than most people can pay for. So your solution wouldn't do anything but put insurance out of business. Its the COST that needs to come down, not just insurance regulations

When every health care provider meets annually to decide jointly what the set prices of care are going to be... thus they are ACTING as though a monopoly exists within the realm of economics analysis. Thus creating incentives to allow new competitors won't do anything, because they all jointly decide on prices. Deregulation would have the OPPOSITE effect since its not regulated now and health care is shit. You seem to think supply is the problem... it isn't,

Netherland & Switzerland, 99% coverage and no public plan, but insurance companies are regulated like utility companies. Taiwan & Singapore have best medical care system in the world, 99% coverage, high quality, NO WAITING, and they are government run with less 5% GDP. Unreasonable premium, preexisting condition exclusion, changing drug formulary, deny treatment, medicare drug GAP for Senior are just plain wrong. And BTW health insurance companies aren't a monopoly seeing as how there are more than one. They don't act like a monopoly because every private insurer issues different prices. They all have to take into account their own personal marginal costs in order to maximize profits. Therefore, if you want price to go down so more people can get insured you need to increase the number of competitors in the industry. A gvt. plan would greatly disrupt a whole industry and cost millions of jobs.

Government does a lot of things wrong and that has a lot to do with special interest groups, but government can and has done things to help our economy/ individual rights. Government can help align self interests with social interests

@PonguigPeopinn well first off climate change is an important issue. I agree we shouldn't just throw money at the problem but we should use incentives (not through tax payers) through various tax credits to help companies go green. The bank bailouts are disputable. Most economists say that if we hadn't bailed out the banks we would be a in a depression right now because of the enormous ripple effect. I don't know about that though... Socialized medicine and the stimulus were/are stupid though.

Anthropogenic global warming has been disproved and exposed as a fraud, the government has no constitutional place giving incentives to anyone, the bank bailouts were an abomination, and the economists are full of shit. Capitalism works best when we allow failing companies to fail and better companies to take their place, without any involvement from the government. It would be nice if the government would let us try and see if that works for a change.

Who "disproved" anthropogenic global warming? There's not enough information one way or the other because we haven't been at these CO2 levels long enough to study it.
One thing is certain, however, and that is that the last 100 years have been hotter than any recorded in human history... and the 15 hottest of those years were in the last 25.
Also, I trust the government (sadly) more than I trust Adelphia, or Tyco, or global crossing, or Dow, or Bear Sterns, or Enron.

what we really need is the government to simply regulate some of the insurance companies so they can't use unethical practices (like dropping clients once they get sick) and get rid of the 1945 law that made insurance companies immune to anti-trust laws. All we need to do is get more and new health insurance companies entering the industry (it is extremely profitable but the current companies have a stranglehold) and that will lower prices and make it easier to get service.

insurance companies don't set the prices of health care, they set the prices of insurance. The health care providers are the ones who set prices, and they peg their prices to the highest amount they can recieve from insurance companies, which is higher than most people can pay for. So your solution wouldn't do anything but put insurance out of business. Its the COST that needs to come down, not just insurance regulations

WRONG. What government healthcare will do is stop the monopoly of health care providers. That is what my comment addressed, which yours fails to do.
There is currently no incentive for the health care industry, which is run as a monopoly, to increase supply because their profit margin would decrease. Thus forcing heal care providers to compete for government contracts, which the government can do because of its leveraging power. Economics 100 dude, pick up a text book

The demand is what sets the prices in any monopoly. You may think that these companies are evil but they are doing what ANY business does, maximize profits through MC=MR. And every firm, even monopolies, face competition in the long run. In any industry when competitors enter the market they increase supply which lowers prices.

(2) demand does NOT effect price in a monopoly setting... it is only a factor, and not even the major one.

Dear lord your dumb! Monopolies abslutely DO adhere to a demand curve! Monopolies have NO supply curve. The only way a monopoly will have a ton of power is if the demand curve is very inelastic. There are a lot of monopolies, and many of them go bankrupt. You really have no idea what a monopoly is. Take an economics class!
And all IM saying is that this reform would hurt more ppl than it would help. The reason the prices are high is because of the quality that each patient receives.

The demand curve for the monopoly is the demand curve for the industry -- since the monopoly controls the output of the entire industry -- and the industry demand curve is downward sloping. So the monopoly's demand curve is downward sloping, That means the monopoly can push the price up by limiting output. If the monopoly cuts back on its output, it can move up the industry demand curve to a higher price. Monopolies do not adhere to the same demand curve as competitive markets you FUCKING IDIOT

The town with the lottery is the tiny villiage of Norwood Ontario, population 1000. ALL residents there do have doctors, but they must travel 10 whole miles to Peterborough, where they have access to hundreds of doctors and a large regional health centre. The lottery is for a lone doctor who wanted to set up a one-man clinic in the tiny villiage. Most American towns of 1000 wouldn't even have a doctor's clinic. You are misrepresenting the facts.

I was pretty comfortable last year when I was only paying $20/mo for health, dental and vision insurance. Plus my deductible for those services were between 10%-20% for medium to major procedures.
Most us know we have the best medical in the world, but not the most cost effective. The insurance and financial sector needs to have major changes. Most us want to be wealth, but most of us are not. So until then, can we propose some intelligent solutions instead of alot of bitchin?

The ppl that want to work and can't find a job. All I keep hearing is "i'm working, and I don't want to pay for someone else." The majority of these ppl didn't fire themselves. I just went and did the research on that, and you are correct. They are not counting the "underemployed". No matter how many P/T jobs you hustle. It does go back to my point...most ppl didn't fire themselves. Heaven forbid anyone you guys know get laid off and get a letter from an insurance company reading: $800/mo with a $5,000 deductible for health insurance. My cousin and a dozen of other ppl I know received that letter. We need more ppl proposing solutions, not just complaints.

The boondoggle you describe is a result of not allowing the free market system to work in the health care field, as well. With the government regulation that goes on already and, with the government's insistence on being a nanny to all the people, costs have swelled to their current levels.
The poor are maintained in their state for perpetuity because of the plantation mentality of the government. Remove the government as the "Great Provider" & things open up for the better.

if the goverment didnt regulate things such as health care insurance companies your costs for health care would be a lot higher than they currenty are. The problem is that there isn't anyone to challenge these companies.
I'd be all for keeping the goverment out of our health insurance, but I dont think there is any other way to keep costs down. You have to turn health care into a not for profit organization, instead of an all for profit organization.

SS and Medicare are going broke. Start a war and cut taxes. America can't compete on a global economy because it is cheaper in countries that have health care. It will only get worse if we don't do anything about it. We already lost the last 8 yrs of doing nothing. If Clinton was still in and served 16 yrs we wouldn't have a nat debt or it would be close to nothing at this point.
