yeah, these things are put together very quickly. we had zero rehearsal. in fact, he was reading and had no knowledge of this excerpt, so really played great despite the circumstances.
Thank you for your kind comments. They are very insightful. Masterclasses are such an artificial environment for music making, though useful for learning.
You could get this excerpt from Jeanne Baxtresser's Orchestral Excerpts for Flute. It's an excecptionally well put together book, you'll definitely enjoy it if you're interested in orchestral music. Good luck with flute playing! =)
Hello. As a teacher, he is inspiring and extremely knowledgeable. He is not scary, and if you are a trusting and hard working student, you will succeed. I have been playing 31 years (yikes).
You are WONDERFUL! I would love some advice. How was he as a teacher? Is he scary?! (I am applying to Northwestern where he teaches) oh and how long have you played the flute??
Hello. You can find this excerpt in the Jeanne Baxtresser book: Orchestral Excerpts for Flute with Piano Accompaniment, published by Theodore Presser. This solo is from Ravel: Daphnis et Chloe, Suite 2, pantomime section.
Hello. Mr. Kujala did not metion too much, except changing my breathing to accomodate the last trill in the excerpt. He was very kind and inspiring, however.
This was very well done. I am playing this for my flute orchestra seating tryouts and i like what you did with it. I'll keep this in mind. Especially with mr. kujala being there. We had a flute masterclass with him last semester. Plus, my flute teacher is one of his students. Well that was great.
Nice. I would love to hear you have more fun with it and add some surprises in terms of flexibillity, color, even rubato (within the rhythm). Good job!
Wally!! just audited a piccolo masterclass taught by him... pretty impressive!

very good sound !!
the music could be a little more expressive, but that's not so easy in such a master class ;-)

the feel and the energy is a bit flat, and by that i mean the emotion you are expressing is dry, the excerpt...you want to build more intensity

Thanks for your kind words. I'm playing a Signature Powell flute w/Yamaha EC headjoint. I've since switched out that headjoint for a Powell Aurumite.

I agree it would have been nice to have some more colour and a tiny bit of rubato like nina mentions. What advice did mr Kujala give you?
