an awesome live experience BUT when I saw them all I wanted was Girl Called Johnny and they didn't play it! It was more than 20 years ago but it still bugs me!
more the costants but undeniably Scott was the driving force and by far the main songwriter. He wrote virtually all their self penend songs on the earlier albums and co-wrote or wrote 'virtually' all self penned on the Celtic period.
@gaconnochie Man, relax. I don't need you to educate me about Waterboys particulars. I have been a fan since the Pagan Place album! I know all the ins and outs. Mike Scott is of course the driving force and actually wrote all the songs. Any of the co credits are merely generosity on the part of Mr. Scott and have nothing to do with lyrics. Most were merely chord suggestions. However, it matters not that the four i mentioned were all around together for the whole time (They actually were for gigs
@thedirtyfecker What matters is that they were flesh that put the meat on the bones of Mikes songs. Mike admits this freely himself. The second incarnation of the Waterboys name use (after Still Burning) was to cash in on the name for record sales. MIke's response you quoted is merely a retort to journalist probing. Until Wick returned to the group it was not actually the waterboys in my book. Anto turning up to do an over dub does not equate to a Waterboys record. Dream Harder, RITWL are solo
@thedirtyfecker One more thing, Mike, Wick, Anto and karl were all signed to Ensign. The rest were not! So on record contract paper they actually were the Waterboys...
They are the core members. Depending on which period of the band you wish to describe you can draw your own conclusions. During the Fishermans Blues and Room to Roam period they were mostly Irish.
The Waterboys are not Scottish. The waterboys have always been a band that have had people coming and out all the time. If you want to define who the Waterboys actually are, it would be fair to say they really consisted of four people. Mike scott who is Scottish, Steve Wickham who is Irish, Karl Wallinger who is Welsh and Anto Thislethwaite who is English. It might also be fair to include Richard Naiff who is English.
@thedirtyfecker Mike Scott's first album was to be a solo album but once in the studio he insisted that it be released under the name The Waterboys. Yes there were permanent group members and many others associated with the group but the driving force has always been Scott himself as song-writer and front man. He's stated he sees no real difference between his solo albums and Waterboys albums and that the Waterboys are simply himself and whoever he happens to be playing with at the time!
@gaconnochie yes I know all that but for it to be 'Waterboys' music it required those components. Anto and steve are the ones who actually gave soul to the music. Scott is great and I have been a huge fan since I was only a kid but despite what Scott says, The Waterboys were Scott, Wickham, Wallinger and Thisslethwaithe backed up by many more. He says whatever he likes but the fact remains that if it were not true he would have released 'Still Burning' as a Waterboys album but didn't...
He only went back to using the waterboys name because it sold more records... On the 'Rock in the Weary Land' he brought in Thisslethwaithe and Wilkinson to do some token horn blowing overdub on 'Crown' and drumming to try to give the album some Waterboys credibility.
@thedirtyfecker "The Waterboys were Scott, Wickham, Wallinger and Thisslethwaithe backed up by many more" I am just going to have to disagree with you here. For a start the quartet you state is the waterboys only actually all played on one track. Wickham only played fiddle on The Pan Within on the album This Is The Sea. He was on the video for Whole Of The Moon but seemingly doesn't actually play on the track. Wallinger left prior to Fisherman's Blues being recorded. Scott and Thistlethwaite
Had many a stompin party listening to these boys, my old neighbours views were "you only live once so it's not a problem, you party as much as you want". He must have felt like he was in the room with us it was so loud, he lived in flat below, God love him.
I was lucky enough to see them play at Ibrox in 85 alongside Hipsway, In Tua Nua, The Cult and Simple Minds...they were the standout band by a country mile.....and it was all for 10 quid.
Their "Big Music" era was some of the best yet most underrated music that came out in the early 80s - I saw them open for U2 and saw them headline a club in Hollywood, where they did a fantastic cover of Van Morrison's "Sweet Thing". "A Pagan Place" is one of my favorite albums.
My all-time favourite band, though I've never had the chance to hear them live. I listened to Fisherman's Blues so much in high school it's like a permanent theme track for me when I remember. They played, with unabashed joy, music that other bands shied away from as uncommercial, and made Celtic cool in Canada before anyone thought to take the wealth of Cape Breton pubs onto mainstages.
Brano capolavoro, grande gruppo, di cui però non si parla mai, mentre la critica ci fa una testa così con gli U2, sempre irlandesi ma secondo me molto meno bravi di loro!!!!
@nalinux To be honest, all they had in common with Madness was the sax. And they are Scottish. And VERY impressive. And one of the top 5 of the century. Otherwise, well done, you were almost right.
I never even knew this video existed - thank you so much for posting. I first encountered this song on The Tube in 84, along with A Pagan Place and Savage Earth Heart. I'd never heard anything like it, and it still sounds as good today.
Anto now plays with Irish band The Sawdoctors. As for Karl Wallinger, I think it would be more accurate to call him an original, rather than founder member, as Mike Scott himself would have sole claim to that title.
This song takes me back to old pub that had this on rotation. You knew it was close to closing time when it played. A Great memory- only 10 years ago too. Great stuff!
I still remember my surprise listening to this song live in Rome when they were touring with The Pretenders in 1984. I was in front of the stage hipnotized by this band that I never knew before. The day after I bought the first two albums, and still love it.
I know, she's beautiful - and I'm going to see her (and The Waterboys) at the end of this month, at the Electric Picnic musical festival near Dublin! Yay! Can't wait! :-)
I know! I noticed straight away that they were missing from the final lineup announcement! I was gutted cos I was really looking forward to seeing them :-(
The promoters substantially reduced the agreed appearance fee to a figure that didn't make economic sense and then declined any further negotiation. So the Waterboys quite rightly decided to give the festival a miss.
