  • to borrow the idiom of his homeland, a lot of bollocks.

  • Such a tune

  • What a sexy little shit he was back in the day! UMM!!! Mike Scott, you are a hottie, Baby!

  • Trop méconnu....

  • i love the Saxophone

  • Fabulous quality -- so happy to have found this!

  • an awesome live experience BUT when I saw them all I wanted was Girl Called Johnny and they didn't play it! It was more than 20 years ago but it still bugs me!

  • Mike Scott is a genius

  • more the costants but undeniably Scott was the driving force and by far the main songwriter. He wrote virtually all their self penend songs on the earlier albums and co-wrote or wrote 'virtually' all self penned on the Celtic period.

  • @gaconnochie Man, relax. I don't need you to educate me about Waterboys particulars. I have been a fan since the Pagan Place album! I know all the ins and outs. Mike Scott is of course the driving force and actually wrote all the songs. Any of the co credits are merely generosity on the part of Mr. Scott and have nothing to do with lyrics. Most were merely chord suggestions. However, it matters not that the four i mentioned were all around together for the whole time (They actually were for gigs

  • @thedirtyfecker What matters is that they were flesh that put the meat on the bones of Mikes songs. Mike admits this freely himself. The second incarnation of the Waterboys name use (after Still Burning) was to cash in on the name for record sales. MIke's response you quoted is merely a retort to journalist probing. Until Wick returned to the group it was not actually the waterboys in my book. Anto turning up to do an over dub does not equate to a Waterboys record. Dream Harder, RITWL are solo

  • @thedirtyfecker One more thing, Mike, Wick, Anto and karl were all signed to Ensign. The rest were not! So on record contract paper they actually were the Waterboys...

  • so 80's but I like!

  • this band is amazing and sould be a hell of a lot more popular

  • They are the core members. Depending on which period of the band you wish to describe you can draw your own conclusions. During the Fishermans Blues and Room to Roam period they were mostly Irish.

  • The Waterboys are not Scottish. The waterboys have always been a band that have had people coming and out all the time. If you want to define who the Waterboys actually are, it would be fair to say they really consisted of four people. Mike scott who is Scottish, Steve Wickham who is Irish, Karl Wallinger who is Welsh and Anto Thislethwaite who is English. It might also be fair to include Richard Naiff who is English.

  • @thedirtyfecker Mike Scott's first album was to be a solo album but once in the studio he insisted that it be released under the name The Waterboys. Yes there were permanent group members and many others associated with the group but the driving force has always been Scott himself as song-writer and front man. He's stated he sees no real difference between his solo albums and Waterboys albums and that the Waterboys are simply himself and whoever he happens to be playing with at the time!

  • @gaconnochie yes I know all that but for it to be 'Waterboys' music it required those components. Anto and steve are the ones who actually gave soul to the music. Scott is great and I have been a huge fan since I was only a kid but despite what Scott says, The Waterboys were Scott, Wickham, Wallinger and Thisslethwaithe backed up by many more. He says whatever he likes but the fact remains that if it were not true he would have released 'Still Burning' as a Waterboys album but didn't...

  • He only went back to using the waterboys name because it sold more records... On the 'Rock in the Weary Land' he brought in Thisslethwaithe and Wilkinson to do some token horn blowing overdub on 'Crown' and drumming to try to give the album some Waterboys credibility.

  • @thedirtyfecker "The Waterboys were Scott, Wickham, Wallinger and Thisslethwaithe backed up by many more" I am just going to have to disagree with you here. For a start the quartet you state is the waterboys only actually all played on one track. Wickham only played fiddle on The Pan Within on the album This Is The Sea. He was on the video for Whole Of The Moon but seemingly doesn't actually play on the track. Wallinger left prior to Fisherman's Blues being recorded. Scott and Thistlethwaite

  • Great song, I almost forgot about it til my friend mentioned it the other day...

  • what is this song about?

my interpretation is about a girl who has a messed up life and she doesn´t know who or what she is anymore

  • we are waiting for your coming in greece

  • If friend good topic

  • Mike looks like Nena. That's scary!

  • Had many a stompin party listening to these boys, my old neighbours views were "you only live once so it's not a problem, you party as much as you want". He must have felt like he was in the room with us it was so loud, he lived in flat below, God love him.

  • Whoaw, i fcking love this tune. I'm only sixteen years old, but these time are pretty interesting to listen to. thnks for posting!

  • BEST

  • apoteosikaaa

  • So powerful and harmonious. Quite a song, dancing quietly in our minds and bodies.

  • such a good song, deserves more credit!

  • @1485x excellentband .This their first song set me on course to buy all their albumns

  • @1485x excellent band .This their first song set me on course to buy all their albumns

  • brilliant song

  • Nice, good old feeling from some time ago

  • @willkohlen

i remember it well! i'm the big 60 this year, need to sit down to take a piss but at least i'm not deaf yet

  • Simple but perfect.

  • MERAVIGLIOSA!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love this song. :-)

  • Le saxo à 0:29 m'assassine!

    DAMN!!!!!!

  • An anthem for my youth

  • 25 years later, I still find myself banging this one out on the piano now and then.

  • actually one of the best songs i ever heard.. just discover it for yourself ;-)

  • There are substantial similarities with "Embarrassment" by Madness

  • I was lucky enough to see them play at Ibrox in 85 alongside Hipsway, In Tua Nua, The Cult and Simple Minds...they were the standout band by a country mile.....and it was all for 10 quid.

  • Their "Big Music" era was some of the best yet most underrated music that came out in the early 80s - I saw them open for U2 and saw them headline a club in Hollywood, where they did a fantastic cover of Van Morrison's "Sweet Thing". "A Pagan Place" is one of my favorite albums.

  • @auzoso Agreed. Saw them many times over the years. The early stuff was different class.

  • My all-time favourite band, though I've never had the chance to hear them live. I listened to Fisherman's Blues so much in high school it's like a permanent theme track for me when I remember. They played, with unabashed joy, music that other bands shied away from as uncommercial, and made Celtic cool in Canada before anyone thought to take the wealth of Cape Breton pubs onto mainstages.

  • Great music from this band...love the song...MORE FANTASTIC ´80´s music at my channel!!!!

  • Absolutely wonderful. They were great but never as great as this track.

  • Too bad this band was never promoted much in the USA. We missed out on alot of good music.

  • Great song.

  • this is a GREAAAAT song!!!!!

  • Brano capolavoro, grande gruppo, di cui però non si parla mai, mentre la critica ci fa una testa così con gli U2, sempre irlandesi ma secondo me molto meno bravi di loro!!!!

  • i dnt really understand why this song is so unpoplular...i love it!!

  • @BlackBeadedLife

Not every song can be great. Not every song can even be good. This is a great song--probably in the top10 of 1984.

  • lisa bresciani

  • Excellent tune. I play it quite a lot when I'm busking!

  • brilliant song.

  • GENIAL souvenir83!!!

  • Under rated band

  • @MrGoonerforlife Most...

  • @MrGoonerforlife and thats an understatement!

  • Mike Scott = Scottish

  • Impressive .... They were so young :P Quite a Madness sound with an english voice , but Irish IIRC .

One of the top 500 of the century .

  • Scottish.

  • @thewaterboys 'kin sassanachs.

  • @thewaterboys Irish Scottish and English, though Im not sure all at the same time!

  • @thewaterboys

    Irish!

  • @thewaterboys AWA THE DOUGLAS!!!! Sorry, reflex thing.

  • @nalinux good call :0)

  • @nalinux To be honest, all they had in common with Madness was the sax. And they are Scottish. And VERY impressive. And one of the top 5 of the century. Otherwise, well done, you were almost right.

  • The sax is sex!!! This is real misic damn luv it ;)

  • Sexy as hell

  • the song is about Petty Smith!!!

  • @LIVIKIA

    uh uh. It's about me.

  • Excellent - heaven

  • 1986 CoHproduction :P

  • Pinkpop Holland 1987. The cure, the cult, The waterboys. Man this was amazing. I never forget. They are even better live.

  • what a debut single so good bought their 1st two albums went off them then but always loved this song x

  • damn these guys could play, not only play but the spirit they were able to transform to the audience was incredible.

  • Good old stuff - arranged like many younger masterpieces. The source of beatnick groove and copied til today. Good stuff.

  • heard it in the disco where i´ve worked a long time and the dj played it as last song - great song great time......

  • Brilliant. So pleased to have founded. I just dreamed of it this night and..got it know

  • I never even knew this video existed - thank you so much for posting. I first encountered this song on The Tube in 84, along with A Pagan Place and Savage Earth Heart. I'd never heard anything like it, and it still sounds as good today.

Anto now plays with Irish band The Sawdoctors. As for Karl Wallinger, I think it would be more accurate to call him an original, rather than founder member, as Mike Scott himself would have sole claim to that title.

  • one of my favourite songs...

  • this album was brilliant, thanks for posting

  • another brilliant memory BAD,Hannover,DJ Jorgo. Often he played that song early in the ( sunday)morning , it was amazing...

  • first time got to see the water boys was in 86 in germany then became a bigger fan

  • Early days for the waterboys..but absoloutly brilliant ..and the way on..................

  • Very good oldie, still love it :D!! The chords may be simple, but the song is at least very original.

  • Might this be a slight piss take on a boy named Sue by Johnny Cash?

  • its good its scary come on you cant scare me

  • Great song & fine ode to Ms Patti Smith...

  • ? ? ?

  • pffffff what a song ,need I to say more??

  • unfortunately, their one and only hit single here in France, it's a shame masterpieces such as "the whole of the moon" etc didn't make it here

  • Would also be great to hear Gala or The girl in the swing.

  • Pinkpop, Holland, 1987. They played this song, it was soo awesome. Actually they are better live.

  • class!

  • just fucking great

  • Still get goosebumps when I listen to this song. And I had NEVER seen the video. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • does anybody know where i can get the piano tab for this song?

  • well the chords are simple

    Am C D7 Dm7 C Am repeat

    dont play the piano though

  • By christ, i adore this song. The piano and sax are outstanding, but so is Sir Michael.

One of the great groups......seriously ignored by crap-loving shitbags the world over.

  • This song takes me back to old pub that had this on rotation. You knew it was close to closing time when it played. A Great memory- only 10 years ago too. Great stuff!

  • great song bought this when it came out loved the 1st 2 albums their best work in my opinion seen 'em live at MK Bowl how long ago ?

  • LoL. The mullet!! Lovin' this song, tho. xoxo

  • love them and their songs

this video! I remember watching you perform

and I still get warm fuzzy chills! You're all

  • Oh wow! I LOVE his mouth! He's very charismatic....Great musician.

  • I still remember my surprise listening to this song live in Rome when they were touring with The Pretenders in 1984. I was in front of the stage hipnotized by this band that I never knew before. The day after I bought the first two albums, and still love it.

  • Yeah, but the Irish are just naturally talented! ;-) We've turned out some major bands and artists for all the size of us!

  • sinead O.C. is soooo hot.

  • I know, she's beautiful - and I'm going to see her (and The Waterboys) at the end of this month, at the Electric Picnic musical festival near Dublin! Yay! Can't wait! :-)

  • whoa! didn't she still made music, good for her! Does she still have that close shave?

  • Dunno... But I'll try to get some video footage of her at 'Electric Picnic' to send you - then you'll be able to see for yourself! :-D

  • Dunno... But I'll try to get some video footage of her at 'Electric Picnic' to send you - then you'll be able to see for yourself! :-D

  • would be so cool, tnx a lot mate.

  • The Waterboys are no longer playing Electric Picnic.

  • I know! I noticed straight away that they were missing from the final lineup announcement! I was gutted cos I was really looking forward to seeing them :-(

Any idea why they're not doing it now?

  • The promoters substantially reduced the agreed appearance fee to a figure that didn't make economic sense and then declined any further negotiation. So the Waterboys quite rightly decided to give the festival a miss.

  • @TribalChurch ..Scottish. Mike Scott was born in Ayr . No offence my Celtic friend.

  • i bought this single in woolies fab tune 1st 2 albums out of tjis world loved em great live at Milton Keynes supporting Simple Minds, The Cult were ace as well seems million miles away now !!

  • I've had this song on my mind for a few days. The lyrics are awesome.

  • nice hair-do!! soooo eighties!

  • late 70s /eighties are brilliant. Punk new wave and all kind s of weird styles with hair and clothes. jaja

  • Sweeeeeet...!

    Great 80's song...

  • supervideo , thanks so much , michael netherlands

  • Incredible song, simply amazing. My dad showed me this and i was instantly in love with it.

  • This has to be one of my favourite songs ever.

On my art course we had to work in groups and produce something based around quotes. My group saw the genius of these lyrics and agreed we should base our work on them. Methinks we produced a pretty ace piece and it gave me a wonderful excuse to listen to the song on repeat for a week :D

  • 'without looking back there was barely a word. if she said goodbye i never heard'

    class.

  • For years I thought that I had been at the Waterboys first gig. Partly because that was wat Mike said himself on stage that night. Turns out that it was their first UK gig and 3rd overall.

Great gig - tho they didn`t play this track.

    My fave Waterboys track? Gala.

  • this is a gorgeous song and i can understand how it could put some people to tears. it has a haunting sound and great lyrics. the 80's rock! i hope they play this at the 80's party, tomorrow. i may be stuck, but i am not stupid, this is AWESOME!!!

  • Love Mike Scott, gosh he was thin in the early 80's! Beautiful man, gorgeous, haunting music, takes me back

  • nice

  • LOVE THEM !!!!

  • anyone know of Scotts solo stuff....?

  • The sax player also was on some Robyn Hitchcock tracks as well wasn't he? His name was Andy Thistlewaite... I think????

  • Correct. Anto Thistlethwaite is his name.

  • His name is Anthony Thistlethwaite and he left the band after the This Is The Sea album and did a couple of solo albums after that.

  • Actually Anto was in the band right thro til Room to Roam. Your probably thinking of Karl Walinger who left after This is the Sea.

  • Some days I DO think I've had enough of both...

  • Ahhh, that saxaphone always gives me cool

    chills :)!!!!

Mike looks so awesome too !!!

Glad you joined You Tube, Waterboys!

Looking forward to much more. I heard that

Mike had been on tour recently!?!

  • simply brilliant

  • unbelievably good...

  • Damn, it's Karl Walinger of World Party. i forgot he was a founding member.

  • You cant beat Mike and the boys really, especially if your scottish . I was on you tube havin a wee big country rush feelin sad how Stuart Adamsons gone and then remembered Mike Scotts still here so things aint so bad..

Man why arent these guys appreciated like Springsteen (legend) is and then realised Scotland a wee place the UK's a wee place and thats the way it is.
