I also built a Clark Craft hydro. Check out "Bobcat Hydro" here on youtube. It's an 8' hydro with a Johnson 9.9 horse. I had to modify it to a tunnel hull to support more weight.
hp is not as important as weight when it comes to the motor. i use old outboards because they're much lighter than new ones. my 35hp engine on this one weighs under 120lbs. a new evinrude 25hp weighs 155lbs and the 40hp is 240lbs. sit in it and put some exercise weights or sand bags in the back and see what the max weight is that it can safely hold.
I'm about to start building the same boat in my tech class next week excited to start my project and hopefully will be up and running by early july
