The guitar standing out in the beginning is actually Harrison's. The weaker, higher pitched guitar part in the background is Clapton. If you watch the film, Harrison had to cut in the middle of the solo to save it as Clapton was basically noodling aimlessly.
Yeah he passed out before this performance and was revived.I think this was the only gig he did in 2-3 year's, like he said he did come out of retirement. He basically lived in his Surrey,England home completely isolated from the world, very dangerous.Lots of money+lots of drugs,no one to stop you=very bad habit.Very hard to get and stay clean, but he did it.He's always seemed very humble to me.I remember the famous picture "CLAPTON IS GOD"
actually, i heard an interview with clapton years ago and he said that when he got to new york, they only thing they could supply him with was methadone, and it knocked him on his butt...
And what's more, it's ironic because not only was Clapton's band almost entirely from Tulsa during his peak years, he also lived there for a period of years during the 70's.
So if that was Clapton's band on stage with him (forgive my ignorance, if not), that means there was a whole lot of Oklahoma in the middle of its polar opposite.. *drum roll please*... New York City.
@ORUPRANKSTAZ you are right, but you got to go back a little farther. Eric Clapton, Carl Radle (bass), Don Preston (guitar), George Harrison and Leon Russell all were part of Delaney & Bonnie and Friends in the late 60's. Later, Eric "stole" Carl, Don and a few others to be in Derek & The Dominoes. Tulsa has given a great deal to rock and roll, all of it good!
@intooblv so true, he told harrison, i wont play this concert unless youre people can supply me with heroin. Because he was a junkie then and he was worried he wouldnt be able to score in NY. So they got him smack, but it was all cut down and weak. So georges manager gave him some pills and he was just in a fog. I read this from his Autobiography. He said, if i ever wanted to remember bad times in the 70's its the footage from this concert, cuz he was a total mess.
@1954telecaster You're wrong, you're the one who should reread that part. Around this time he also had a girlfriend who used to get heroin for him because he was in such a miserable state that he couldn't get it himself. Eric is one of my favourite performers, but that doesn't mean that I think he behaved like an asshole at times.
@1954telecaster maybe you should reread it, coz he did. He wouldn't do the gig unless he was supplied. It was the only way they could get him on the plane.
yeah clapton may have picked the wrong guitar for the solo but it still looks cool and he somehow managed to rock that thing even in his drugged out state he is a god
In the 1970s Clapton withdrew from recording and touring to his home in Surrey, England, where he nursed his heroin addiction. This resulted in a career hiatus interrupted only by the Concert for Bangladesh in August 1971 (where he passed out on stage, was revived, and continued the show).
Did he pass out? He certainly struggled to physically get on stage because he couldn't get any H. He used a substitute to get him through (just). Clearly, he regrets his approach now he's clean.
@PsychedelicVideos Actually, the story was that he was snorting pure heroin in England. And when he got to the states to play this concert, they provided him with a stash, but it was so cut down that it didn't do anything for him. His woman had to hit the streets to buy up all the supply she could find just so he could function.
@PsychedelicVideos Sure. I read it in his book, 'Clapton: The Autobiography." Just read the chapter about the Concert for Bangladesh. It's all in there. He is very open and up front about his past. I think this is something a person has to do in order to complete the process of cleaning up.
@PsychedelicVideos I see no need to provide that evidence, since I am not asserting that it is, in fact, weaker. Rather, my assertion is that HE SAID it didn't do anything for him because it was cut down, and not pure, which is what he was accustomed to. See how this works?
Only Clapton, still play the guitar great while he is high on drugs

This band, including Clapton, was essentially the same group that made "All Things Must Pass." Many of them went on to form Derek & the Dominoes.

He gave up heroin in 1974.
