Beauty is in the ear/perception of the beholder... If you love this, you're right. If
you like another version better, your right. Relax and enjoy all kinds of art and music... If you find the ugly critic rising, take a breath and another breath. This is one version... it's up to you and your whole life experience as to what your experience is. It's possible to like many version of a tune... Write your own tune or do your own version that resonates with you....
I agree with MrCIMASTUDENT. Too busy, rushed, complex. You can add complexity to a nice tune, but this rendition is just too crammed with jumps up and down in the left hand especially. Great jazz improv. from a jazz/theoretical/technical perspective. But is it beautiful, artful from a general listener's perspective? I'm a pianist myself, and my response: no.
Mark- Your playing is still magnificent no matter how many times I listen to this. With 20,000 views, probably many people have had more than one listen to your playing. I hope that all is well with you and your wonderful Family and that your teaching is as enjoyable as ever.
It's called a 'cover' not an 'exact representation of the original artists work'. Cut some slack, if you didn't like it you shouldn't have wasted your time commenting it.
Just because the songs theme is somewhat 'down' maybe this artists feels particularly happy today.
Notice in the description it also says 'jazzy version'... this sounds jazzy to me.
I applaud Marks version of this classic tune... I would also like to suggest listening to "Gary Clark Piano" Over the Rainbow.. These two guys have the best performances posted on you tube... Check it out!
Although I appreciate his incredible technique, I'd have to agree with other critics...this is a song about "the hard to attain"..."the pain of not yet being there..." the tempo of this rendition does not reflect the mood or theme of this song...too bad...I really like accomplished musicians, and 'collect' Over the Rainbow renditions on my site...another terrible rendition is Eric Clapton's version--yuch!
I have to agree with some other people. It's not a question of whether or not this man isn't a great piano player. His skills are nice, but the song doesn't really flow. There's too much in it, and the melody is kinda pounded out by all the archipelogoes and other innovations.
This man isn't a conformist that you critics have become conditioned to. Any fool can play sheet music but it takes and real artist to make it there own. If you're judging this piece not for what it is but for what you've been accustomed to. Great Job Mark! Two Thumbs Up!
Where is the soul? Where is the spirit of the song? Where is the jazz? That's one of the worse version of that song as I have ever heard. Got headache.....
@bardbulky15 man you should chill......everyone is entitled to their opinion. Personally, I think this version is too busy and that often in jazz, less is best.
I disagree with you, Brad. Mark does a GREAT job with this song and, if anything, doesn't stray far enough away from the melody line. Mark is a real master.
Sorry Mark i meant to send you my version of over the rainbow but sent lady is a tramp instead!! sorry but i'd like you to listen and maybe give me a tip or two!! thanks Phil
There is a video with David brubeck playing this song on a piano, in contrast with Mark sobol, he plays what is really needed for the ears laet's say.
too much technuque instead of passionate playing, this is a very beautiful song, he is not playing it right, it's a whole accord mess. again he's playing beautifully, but not enough beauty, specifically for this song!
david is right on this one. this guy is great but the way he plays the song is not the way it is meant to be played. It was a simple song by a simple man who wanted to share his music. This song is good, it just has too many trills and harmonic melodies that weren't made for it.
I will be putting my version on soon,i hope you like it Mark.( a cross between original version an shearing version with a few of my own probably too obscure chords in!!)
Ive learnt a lot listening to your version and try and add some of your harmonies, excellent version.
Mark- Outstanding rendition. I am so glad that I had a chance to at least perform my Handwhistling with you, even if it was only the audio of "Autumn Leaves" and "My Favorite Things" that I was able to put up here. Now Tubers can see that you really exist! I am still working on getting us a gig at the Kimmel Center or on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.... Best wishes to you and your family...

not a very deep interpretation, very flowerly....his chords are very flat, too much talking and not so much saying.

I love this version. He's great.
Just think that it's a new song based on Somewhere over the rainbow, and that'll be fine for you guys who are really serious about the song's meaning.
Why so serious? LOL

@drlinvinstin I have to agree with you on this one. Incredible skill, but the wrong style of playing for such a subtle piece as this should be

I found the pace to quick for my taste. And perhaps a bit aggressive for a song such as this. But still amazing skills.

very good...trills were a little much at times, whole thing might've been a bit over the top for my taste...but hey, you got mad skill!
And it's not jazzy...it's just, well I don't even know what....but jazz should be behind the beat and relaxed.
