  • Keep ale of the week for sure -- craft beer is great, it's at the end of your episodes, and it definitely gives them even more character.

  • this would be lots better without the annoying fail-at-humor commentary, just explain about the game without trying to be funny, u know what ur talking about but completely spoil it and make it aggravating to watch, kinda like being forced to watch commercials on tv

  • ale of the week is a great small segment! People actually request you stop it? Man, the sense of entitlement people have O_o

Gothic is such a great game, the sequel is pretty good too.

  • now then, everyone will tell you to stay far away from Gothic III, but if you apply the Community Patch, then you can enjoy that release as wel

do note how many of the things present in this game (Gothic 1) has been "ported" to TES V - Skyrim, which is kind of ridicoulus how long it took for Bethesda to implement something remotely similar

I do enjoy Gothic 1 best, but that's probably because I've spent the most time with it compared to the second and third

    and remember, Gothic 4, isn't

  • huh i got the Gothic univerise (1, 2, 3 and all expansion) for £4.99 at a local store :)

  • I think I like Gothic 2 best as well. The world grew quite a bit it (it even includes some of the old world, now changed), it adds more diversity (farmland, coastal region, grander landscapes) and dragons!

All in all, I enjoyed every game from Prinanha Bytes and getting antsy for Risen 2. Be sure to get the latest version though and beware of the Gothics that were not developed by PB (Forsaken Gods and Arcania), they are said to be pretty awful. I didn't play either yet, so I can't say for sure.

  • I vote to keep the brew segment. Also, don't listen to the people bagging on your sense of humor.

  • I don't even drink but I think you should keep the ale of the week. Cheers!

  • Hey Matt, just thought I should put a little request out there for a game I think you should TOTALLY play. It's called Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl, and while it may not be a true RPG or cRPG, it's a game I think you would really enjoy. It's very slow paced and atmospheric, and is actually semi-realistic for what it is. I would love to see you do a video on it, or on Call of Pripyat, which was my most favorite of the franchise.

  • Oh, and by the way , keep the "ale of the week" segment, that's probably the only reason i try to watch even your retrospectives, that i don't really enjoy.

  • BTW Ale of the week is awesome, don't listen to the alcohol haters.

  • Gothic 1 is in my opinion the best I've played, though Gothic 2 with NOTR (Night of the Raven) expansion is great as well.

  • Piranha Bytes will release Risen 2 in April. Don't miss it.

  • I really really enjoyed Gothic back in the day. For some odd reason i never got around to play the second, but i truly feel like now's the right time. Let's give it a go.

  • Love Ale of the week, even though I'm more of a swamp weed man myself. My vote is for keeping it.

  • Comment removed

  • ORC!!!!

  • I really like your interviews, but i guess i have never been a fan of your retrospectives. Personally i don't feel you do the games any justice at all. Gothic is a very good example. It has a slow start? You are just given some friendly advice and then thrown into the world completely on your own without any handholding, or any other modern features, that basically assume you're mentally challenged. You are on your own in a very hostile, unforgiving territory. I wouldn't exactly call that slow.

  • The problem with the ale of the week is that none of is it available in Australia. So I just watch all the time and wonder what it all tastes like. (With that said, I don't think I really like any of the other ale we have here... but somehow Matt makes everything look good.)

  • Gothic I has the best feel/atmosphere. But overall, I'd say that Gothic II with the expansion "Night Of The Raven" is best.

  • I thought about buying Gothic 1 or 2 when they were on sale on GOG, but I didn't. After watching this video, I think I'll do that next time.

And please keep ale of the week, it's always a fun way to wrap up the episode.

  • Haven't tried the first in the series, but I definately enjoyed Gothic 2 and Gothic 3. Gothic 3 is an amazing game, with excellent gameplay opportunities realized where the player is able to participate in a game world changeing war(rebellion?). My favourite thing about the Gothic series by far has to be the amazing sense of adventure and exploration. Basically, if you can see it...you can get to it. You don't have loading screens when you enter a building, you just walk there...amazing series!

  • I am not sure how long exactly it took me to finish, but I think it was 50 hours+. I am not sure if it was because I spent far too much time smoking Swamp weed while playing ;-)

  • I really enjoyed Gothic 1 - I remember seeing a review in PC Gamer (UK) and I really wanted to get it. It took me ages to actually track down a copy, but it was worth the wait. I was really impressed with the open world, and day / night cycles. The NPC have schedules, and eat / sleep, and craft items. The world has very little loading screens too. I think the only loading screens happen when entering the mines, and other underground areas. I played a bit of Gothic 2, and that was good too.

  • Ale of the week is a fun touch :).

I have the first 3 Gothic games, I love them. Interestingly, my favorite is the first. I feel like the role play concepts, the mechanics, and setting are very coherent together in a way that isn't quite pulled off in the following "episodes." I think that is the source of Gothic 1's strong charm. Though it could also be that the sheer originality of the first title is what gave it so much impact for me.

  • @blacklily8 Please don't get rid of the "ale of the week" segment!!! I usually try the brews after watching your episode. Keep up the great work! PS - How do we make a contribution to the show AND how can we suggest an ale for you to try?

  • @MrSgtpepper24 It's on the channel page, but you can also to go Armchair Arcade and look for the Matt Chat link. If you make a donation, don't click too fast--there's a message button there you can input a beer recommendation.

  • i sent you a message when i first subscribed asking if you'd ever consider covering and of the games in the Gothic series, awesome to see you got around to it!

  • 7:37 temporary demonic possession

  • Story-wise, I'd say that Gothic 1 is the best. As an overall game, however, Gothic 2 (with Night of the Raven installed) is the best of the series (I haven't played the 3rd one, but from what I've seen, it doesn't hold up). Gothic 2 improves upon Gothic 1 in almost every way; more interesting quests, more types of environments, and it is a lot longer game too (Gothic 1 took me roughly 30 hrs to beat, while Gothic 2: NotR took me over 95 hrs!).

  • @matternicuss When you say it took you roughly 30 hours to beat Gothic 1, is that because you're really good at RPG's, or is it because it's a short game? I'm looking for a relatively short RPG, so Gothic 1 might be what I'm looking for.

  • @rowdyrob3d Gothic 1 is a relatively short RPG. On average, I believe it takes around 30-35 hrs. Maybe shorter if one uses a guide. If anything, I take my sweet time beating games, despite the amount I've played over the years. Gothic 1 and 2 are great games, and should be played in order in any case. Just be patient with the combat system!

  • For anyone new to this game that is playing on a newer OS like Vista or Win7, you may be confused as to why there is apparently no music. There is a patch that fixes this problem, and trust me, you don't want to play this game without music, it does a lot to enhance the overall atmosphere.

  • @matternicuss I noticed that somehow my music was simply turned off. I went into the settings and turned it back on. Not sure how that happened, but I agree, the music is excellent and well worth listening to.

  • OK kids close your eyes!!! BWAHAHAHA!!!

  • I always thought this reminded me of Escape from NY. Great game, and a good subject for an episode. Gothic, not Escape from NY.

  • @Locrum Oh, man! That's what I forgot to put in. I was trying to find a place to work in "Call me Snake" but it slipped my mind. I actually enjoyed the movie for the cheese factor; that voice Kurt Russell does through the whole movie cracks me up.

  • Matt, I am cracking up listening to all your comments (and snoring) during the intro video!

  • Good show this week. Lots of fun to hear you chat about Gothic. I like the chat at the end about beer,

  • I got a lot of good laughs out of this one, Matt. Maybe it was all that swamp weed.

  • These newer RPGs can't hold a candle to this game!

  • If they don't like the ale of the week segment, they can just stop watching. It's always at the very end of the video, so it's not like they'd be missing anything. I've been enjoying it. I've even found a few of the beers featured locally and tried them out myself. People need to stop whining so much. Not every person I subscribe to always does things I enjoy. When that happens, I just watch something else. I don't throw a hissy fit.

  • @MazokuRanma Spoken like a sane individual. Something of an exotic species around here sometimes. :P

  • Great vid, and keep on with the ale.

  • Thanks for another great review! I haven't played Gothic, so I think I should try it out. Looks fun. Then again, am I ready for the time sacrifice, because time is scarce as it is .. you bet I am! About the ale of the week. You should definitely keep the segment, because it's unique to your show and as with everybody else, I like getting to know all these different ales. Also, if it's something you like doing and having in these videos, nobody should be able to tell you any different.

  • Please keep the ale of the week segment. It's definitely brought some good beverages to my attention. Unless you're willing to do a "swamp weed of the week". ;) Cheers.

  • Glad you liked the beer - I was half imagining that you were going to do a spit take after you tried it. ;)

  • @feldhamer Ha! That's alcohol abuse. I actually quite like it. I have some other flavors here I intend to get around to eventually. It's great brew.

  • HAHA, "Want some rice stew...do me a favour."

    Ok,kids,close your eyes.

  • Haha that was funny when the dudes relentlessly chased you.

  • I think a game like this emphasizes how badly 3D graphics age. Not that the game was ever a technological masterpiece but I certainly don't remember it looking this bad. 2D games like Ultima VII on the other hand still look good IMO.

  • "Told you to stay off Pirate Bay"

    I lol:ed :-D

  • I didn't try any gothic game but Risen is one of my favourite rpg. The gameplay looks similar.

  • Oh Gothic, I try to play this game at least twice a year. It was my first RPG ever, and this game was so amazingly popular in Poland that nearly every role-playing games fan in here played it. Great episode.

  • Finaly, you pay enough attention to this europian fair good work. I'm not sure if it's better first or second installment, third attempted to be non-linear (very more that Witcher 2), what leads to bugs, but im very appreciate the attemp todo something better. This game is about atmosfere, rpg system is very simple, dialogs are empty, too much killing, but there is something, something great.

  • Were you trolling about the slow start? That is the best part of the game. Anyway just play them in order. G3 is a bit different but it is great as well, just don't forget to use community patch 1.74, alternative balance, and AI on, and difficulty on hard.

Gothic 4 sucks it is just stupid linear hack&slash made by a different developer.

Gothic: Forsaken Gods is bad, with allot of stupid, but actually playable imo, it has CP as well. (not made by PB either)

  • Gothic is brilliant, but Gothic II (with the expansion) is an absolute masterpiece. Probably the best, most immersive cRPGs I've played. Gothic III was pretty much unfinished when it was released, and Gothic: Forsaken Gods is an outsourced abomination that no-one should ever touch again. As for "ArcaniA: A Gothic Tale" or whatever the hell it was called, that doesn't even qualify as a Gothic game.

  • One of my first RPGs. I loved the combat system, whre you can create your own style or tactics.

    Greetz from Germany

  • Coincidentally I just finished the first one and was very impressed with it, especially the world design. I just started the second one and as good as the first one is, the second is quite a bit better. It has everything the first one had but more refined and has a more interactive setting.

  • Answering your question, IMO the best game in the series is definitely the second one with an extension called Night of the Raven. It is a massive piece of work, adding to this great game a whole new region to explore and lots of cool quests along with a new fraction (pirates!). It makes Gothic2 more challenging than the G2 itself (enemies become tougher), but it's totally worth it. Check it out Matt, you shouldn't be disappointed. Oh, and in spite of how it looks, I'm not German - I'm Polish :)

  • Keep the Ale of the Week. It is your personality to your show and gives a diverse and unique video experience. Thanks for the Gothic overview as well. I do not have the time to play these games anymore, and find it rewarding watching others explain certain games while playing them. Thank you.

  • I got gothic 1 and 2 but i couldn't understand what to do in the first and the 2nd one totally messed up on my geforce at the time. Wonder what amount of gameplay hours people will have to put into this to get through it, seems so damn large.

  • haha the funniest episode

  • Gothic 2 is my favorite game in the series. That said I love them all, but in term of gameplay and story Gothic 2 was best at least for me. That said, I'm big fan of German RPG games and do check Realms of Arkania trilogy if you haven't already. One thing that German RPGs share is high difficulty level, but ultimately they are very rewarding because of their depth and openness. All three games are on GOG as well

  • One of the things that I enjoyed, and that I didn't see too often in other RPGs, was hunting animals. Learning how to skin them, declaw them, defang them, and so on. And then locating them, killing them, and going back to town with valuable components to trade for items. I liked little touches such as animals behaving differently if they are about to attack, or how you can run away from dangerous animals and lead them into tastier preys so that they'll ignore you.

  • @TrejoDuneSea I really enjoy that aspect as well. You feel like you're getting more out of the grinding aspects that way.

  • Good old Gothic!

I managed to get one of the first copies ever to be translated into english and selled on the italian market, and never regretted it. Especially since I had been struck with a particular nasty flu that forced me at home for an entire month, so I had a lot of free time on my hands (after the first week, when I could barely walk around home.

Can't wait to see if/when you are going to do a retrospective on Gothic 2, hopefully with the expansion.

  • im not crazy about the ale of the week thing since i dont really drink too much but i dont mind it so keep doing it if u enjoy it

  • Truly appreciate your shows Matt. The one thing I'd like see, if I may be so bold to ask, is that you show footage and make comment further into the games you play rather than extended periods concentrating upon the introductions. I get the feeling that just when your show really gets the juices flowing it's time finish up. Keep the Ale of the week! Just keep doing what you're doing. It's brill :)

  • @meatphysicz It's really tough as you can imagine. It's easier if it's a game I've already played, but when you're starting from scratch and only have a week to do it...Well, like I said, you can imagine.

  • Is there a solution for running this on Windows 7?

  • @meatphysicz try the GOG versions , thats why you sohuld always first look at gog dot com for older games , they are sometimes ( if not most of the times ) also compatible with vista and windows 7 .

  • @meatphysicz If you're running the STEAM version, you have to find the gothic executable and set it to run under admin mode. There are instructions for this online if you google it.

  • @blacklily8 wwwgog.com

  • You don't cook for cooking sake. If you cook food it gives better health, etc. Name a recent RPG that copied that game feature!

  • @HardWarUK Or the skinning. Is there a way to fish?

  • Two great cRPG's start with a punch in the face. Have you covered the other one Matt? Does anyone know what the other one is, even?

  • And yes, there are teleportation runes you can get from the mages or find on occasion in specific places. But for the most part you'll be running around, which is why I recommend a healthy supply of speed potions. My favorite game of the series would have to be the second Gothic, it's more or less the first one, but with more content (the prison colony you're in is a side area in it), more gameplay and a lot better refined. Also, check out Risen, same studio, same gameplay, different name.

  • The ecosystem was also great. All those creatures actually sleep at night, I used to walk trough the beautifully composed forests at night, and accidentally step on those sleeping chickens. And the rules, for the most part, people won't kill you, they'll beat you, rob you, but murder is frowned upon and rules are actually enforced for all by the guards. It's also exploitable to no end. I got past Thorus there by jumping past him in a rush. Also, if you level up while dead you're resurrected.

  • It wasn't until I played Gothic that I understood how a 3D RPG world should be created. There are so many paths, places, secrets and just stuff, content stashed into such compact 3D space that most other games, like Elder Scrolls, need an immensely larger area to convey.

And the angles, actual slopes are a rare thing to see in such games, mostly because the majority of them are designed in 2D.Piranha Bytes is by far the best studio out there when it comes to creating 3D worlds. Love this game

  • @unacomn I thought the same thing--they did a great job with making you feel stuff was high or low. It's a bit hard to see the edge of a steep drop sometimes, but I guess that's just realistic.

  • Matt if YOU like doing the Ale of the Week then do what makes you happy and keep it going.

  • You get teleportation runes later. And you forgot to explain how the leveling system/skill system works.

For people interested on the game, there's a nice widescreen solution for it. Google it.

  • Super show Matt, great job! The blue swirl around *insert cool name of the hero* was the cause of being too close to the magic barrier surrounding The Colony.

Please, please don't stop the Ale-Of-The-Week segment! It gives an unique flair to the show. Also I like seeing you fumbling around slightly drunk with bottle opener.

  • The "slow start" is actually what makes these games more fun and believable overall. You made it sound like the game had "given" you these arrows at the beginning, but if you take a closer look, you'll see the whole picture. It's part scenery design. The hanging skeleton (or then, a living person) was used for target practice, and some shots simply missed, and hit the tree behind. These are all little details you wouldn't expect to find, but they are common in the Gothic/Risen series.

  • Winners Don't Use Swampweed

  • You should also try out Spellforce and Spellforce 2. ;)

  • Oh and please do keep ale of the week, I like it and it educates me on new types of ale...

(though it is kinda unrelated to gaming but...its awesome!)

  • @abeheron IMO vital to the show. Gives it... Flavour :p

  • Gothic 2 the best of the series - btw the blue aura at the start of the game (in case you are wondering) is the barrier alert, if you keep walking after you have the blue aura (and not turn back) I believe it auto kills you.

  • The slow start is one of the staples of the Gothic games (and Risen). You start out weak and at the mercy of the world, but that makes it so much sweeter when you level up and become more powerful. There's a really nice sense of progression in the games. It makes the world feel more real and alive as well, and in my opinion it's a much better open world RPG than the elder scrolls games. Do play the sequel, it's generally considered the best in the series.

  • You get a lot of teleportation stones later in the game.

  • Ale of the week is awesome. Haters gonna hate, don't mind them :)

  • It's on GOG!!

  • Great series. Risen as well.

  • Yay, a video!

  • OMG i love this game!

  • Being German this is still one of my favorites.

  • I like your drink of the week

  • I played Gothic 1 and 2. Gothic 1 IS really hard at the start but, slowly (oh so very slowly) you start to feel more confident and in control. Gothic 2 was good but, I ran in to a lot of bugs and at the end I was so powerful killing the Bad "guy" was a cake walk. As for the Ale of the week, I don't even drink and I look forward to it. What was the name of the one Ale that had a lot more "Pow!" to it then you were expecting?

  • Gothic has better textures than Skyrim, lol

ive really got to play this again, Gothic 1/2 were great, especially with mods, but i remember 3 sucking

  • @Ultizer it sucked but now with the latest 1.74 community patch its veryy good . worth playing , bugs are fixed and gameplay more challenging and balanced

  • So...The basis of this game is a bunch of prisoners make a summer camp? And they sit around smokeing weed and eating chicken foods? Uh...I think I will stick with the salt pile game for now.

Definitely keep the ale of the week goin'.

  • The beer review is at the end of video, anyone who doesn't want to want it can turn it off.

  • I love Ale of the Week and the quotations too!

  • This game looks a lot like "The Witcher," which you reviewed (rather unfavorably) in a previous Matt Chat. How do the two games compare?

  • and I like the ale thing, though I can't find any of them around here, I can pretend I am drinking too lol.

  • Matt, do you by any chance sell that copy of Empire and/or if you have a copy of SSI's Colonial Conquest boxed too?

  • Ha! This is the first RPG game that I see you can smoke grass...LOL

  • Comment removed

  • Matt, would you consider doing a retrospective on BioForge?

  • STOP! Hammer time!

I never managed to like this game mostly due to the awful controls.

    Otherwise, good game when patched.

  • All true RPG players love ale. Keep em coming.

  • @EdwardElric555 thats true! because there are soooo many bad ones we have to dredge through

  • @DanimalDamage I don't drink much. I can't keep it down T_T so I have go through some of them sober O_O like Mass Effect god I hated that game.

  • I love ale of the week. It's fun.

  • When I played Gothic for the first time, I called it GTA III in the middle age, lol.

So yeah, even I, despite being German, played it when it first come out for a cheaper price, lol.

LMAO at "told you to stay off PirateBay" XD

    Thanks for the video! :D

  • Keep ale of the week please.

  • Matt put more tags like fake mermaids and Real Lions eat Obama

  • LMAO your comments "where's Nicolas Cage" so funny
