I live in the US, and the Marina style Safeway is becoming an endangered species here as well. I wish they would declare some of these stores as historic monuments and restore them (the buildings) to their original condition, yet update the technology to today's standards for store operations. I have an old Sweda mechanical cash register that originally came out of a Safeway store here in the States that was in use during the 1960s and 70s.
@97Siren - Safeway consolidated stores in the core area and this being an older building was the one deemed expendable. As an update - they have just begun renovating the building to what looks to be several commercial spaces. The rumour being that they will square off the marina roof and lower it. That still leaves one Safeway Marina type building in town still operating as a Safeway.
They did not completely square it off but they cut back the front overhang which removed the uplift "wings" off to the sides. Pretty nice looking space though, with three shop spaces and a fair amount of glazing (but not the floor to ceiling as the marina style had). Kudos to the developers for utilizing rather than tearing down.
@super8film There are still a couple old Safeway marina style stores operating under different names in Omaha, Nebraska. Safeway pulled out of Omaha in the mid 1980's. They look the same now as they did back then. Except for the name.
@cooltay92 ...they are good looking buildings, so other than sort of being a Safeway "brand" (which might be a negative for someone using the building to sell their own "brand"), it makes sense to me to use them without much if any modification. Good for Omaha.
What an awesome documentation of community history! These urban spaces,, such as grocery stores, play such a huge part in our day-to-day life. I know a lot of people on here seem suggest that it's silly to "cry over a store" but it's precisely these kind of place that are etched in our memory and dream. I sure hope your children and grandchildren enjoy this video as much as I did. Thank you! Also, I think this replacement music totally fits.
Last time I was in San Francisco(3 years ago) , I was suprised they still had a Safeway like this. And there is nothing wrong with being sentimental. I was upset when they tore down the old "Nob Hill" in Gilroy Ca.
Damn how small is your town that you are that upset over a Safeway closing. I would hate to see what you would do if they closed the local Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons
@garycalgary..actually, the music I had to switch to thanks to WB is probably what prompts your comment. It is pretty bombastic on a certain level. But, I admit to being a sentimental old fool just the same.
@super8film Safeway closed all their stores in England in 2005 when it was bought by Morrisons. When you get used to shopping somewhere you like to be able to continue to do so. Safeway was one of the first shops I remember going into as a kid, my father used to work at our local store many years ago.
I'm guessing that you had to pull the Ian & Sylvia and Son Volt music. The tags seem to indicate "Going, Going, Gone" for the latter, what did you use for Ian & Sylvia, "Everybody Has To Say Good-bye" or "Four Strong Winds" or ??? What is the music that you ended up with instead, it may actually work even better as an atmospheric soundtrack to your video obituary for the Safeway.
@davidlenander....the I & S was "You Were On My Mind" and then Son Volt and filmed audio at the end. The one provided by Youtube (cant remember the name) works well but I have not had enough time to work the construction audio back in.
what abunch of idiots at the end using their picker to tear the sign off wtf?? see how the boom sways like crazy when the sign finally breaks free....fcking scabby morons are going to get hurt doing dumbass shit like that!! hopefully killed by natural selection
Pretty rough all right. The sign swung out over traffic as well (they erected no barricades). Broken neon(?) tube glass was shooting around. The only defence I can give for their antics would be Safeway wanted it cleared out pronto (this all happened between 6:00PM and 12:00 Midnight), it was late, the temp was about -38 C with a killer windchill, and they were low bid..
Low bid alright! Time constraints should not mean taking chances! LUCKY no one was hurt. Nice video though......shopped there with my ma as a kid....always liked the ceiling,(seemed huge as a kid), and 5cent chocolate samplesLOL!! whats the plan for the store/lot??
What a waste of a beautiful marina Safeway. It would seem Safeway thinks we like the "lifestyle" concept so they close these gems from the '60s. There is still a nice operating marina Safeway in Eureka Calif.
This is a really nice store. I recall in Maryland -USA we had many older marina style SAFEWAY stores with the original round "s" logo. For a time they would put your bags into crates that they would send outside for you by sliding the crate on a conveyor track of wheels. The aisle layout was always the same from store to store. Thanks for posting this video. I'm glad you preserved the images of this fine location. It really hurts to see the removing of those signs. R.I.P old friend!
Indeed. I used Youtube's AudioSwap to "correct" a disputed tune on the audio track and it truncated to 1:47. Apparently not an isolated incident and a pile of them are getting cut down to 1:47 by audioswap. It will be interesting to see if the staff can figure it out without losing the other 6 plus minutes or if I will have to reload.
Great great video. The Safeway closest to my house in the Vancouver suburbs (Coquitlam) has this same marina-style exterior. I myself work at a different nearby location that has an interior similar to this store but is smaller and also quite old (late 50's, early 60's opening).
I miss that Safeway, but their bakery section was icky... stuff was almost always past the good date or almost there. Loved the old check outs though - the rotating circle. I swear though stuff was more expensive at this Safeway that the one in Tyndall Park and on River (I went to those more often).
Thanks for taking a video - I was sad to see it close. I never got a chance to take any pics.
Wow, didn't know there were Safeway stores in America!

It's like losing a old friend when you have to watch it get torn down. I live on GUAM and safeway was discontinued in 1992 or 93.

Here in Wisconsin, we used to have a grocery store called "Kohl's Foods." they were sold off to A&P in 1983. They closed their last store in 2003.

They removed the Domo Gas Bar from the lot and have put up a For Sale or Lease sign on the frontage.

Yes, we used to have these Marina Safeways in my hometown, but they all closed, or became something else, when Safeway left the area, in 1984.
