  • R.I.P. Richard Lainhart (February 14, 1953 - December 30, 2011)

  • amazing job on programming and performing... rest in peace Richard... you inspired many of us

  • Beautiful! Rest in peace Richard, you will be missed! :-(

  • Lovely!

  • Magnificent!

  • Thank you so much for this performance and realization. Profound and Lovely.

  • Thank you so much for this performance and realization. Profound and Lovely.

  • Using the continuum for this is a really brilliant idea. Also, as others have said, the dynamics are excellent. Incredibly tasteful arrangement-great job.

If I'm not mistaken, C. S. Levine himself commented below with praise. Apparently you're on the right track. A+.

  • @zenocomplex Thank you!

  • The single most beautiful recording of Messiaen I have heard. Deft use of dynamics and timing that I found is often lacking from recordings of Louamge and Oraison. Only an expressionistic musician could understand.

  • @mediocrefunkybeat Thank you!

  • Any chance of releasing a high-fidelity audio recording of this?

  • @tlainhart I'm working on it. I'll send you one in the meantime.

  • thank you :)

  • incredible ! This continum fingerboard... and this is very very well played. Bravo and lovely interpretation.

  • great!!!respect from moscow

  • A Wonderful version of this wonderful composition! The instruments look so futuristic.

I am currently working myself on a version for Theremin.

    best regards from Berlin

    Thomas

  • Thank you Thomas! Please let me know when you get your theremin version recorded - I'd love to hear it.

  • Very beautiful! This could also prove to be a very cost-effective alternative to the ondes Martenot, especially in the future.

  • cost effective?

    this is a 30 000$ + setup.:)

  • ondes Martenots are far more expensive.

  • could you show me a link? Never heard of it.

  • You can view its page on Wikipedia; due to their rarity, these instruments can run well up into the 100 000 range (or even higher). Rental of an ondes is not exactly inexpensive either.

  • You've reminded me how good the Haken Continuum is Richard. Of course the Buchla must be making a substantial contribution too. Very nice playing and very nice tones. Thanks for sharing.

    Andris

  • very nice! I was wondering, can the buchla maintain the 1 cent tuning accuracy of the continuum fingerboard? I interested in making some just intonation music..

  • Thanks! I haven't tried it myself, so I can't say, but I think it's possible the 200e would be able to maintain 1 cent accuracy. The biggest issue in tuning the oscillators to the Continuum is getting the CV In range settings correct, for which I've found the StroboSoft software tuner invaluable. If you can get the right ranges, you should be able to get the necessary tuning precision. But it would take a lot of tweaking, based on my experience.

  • Wonderful video! Easily one of the top 200e performances, but I'm guessing you would make a CZ-101 sing beautifully as well.

  • Nice job =) Did you learn from yourself how to use a synthesizer or did you study something special ?

  • great, my fav 20th century piece, with a new timbre, unknown for me. Extremely well played. Do you know if the score can be found for free on the interwebs?

  • Thank you! As for the score, there's no free version I know of, and this particular transcription is my own, from the version in the Quartet for the End of Time.

  • The 200e is polyphonic? That's incredible! The Continuum/200e combo is a match made in heaven, in my opinion. Maybe add a Moog Etherwave, but other than that, prefect. This is terrific!

  • Hypnotized!!! Very very intense!

  • Very deep! Cool synth there!

  • absolutely beautiful !

  • what a beautiful performance!

    Congratulations!

  • Absolutely loved it! If its not too much trouble, could you list what Buchla modules you use? Im curious as Ive been following your performances with great interest.

  • Thank you!

    (1) 225e MIDI Decoder/Preset Manager, (1) 297 Infinite Phase Shifter, (1) 210e Control And Signal Router, (1) 227e System Interface, (1) 266e Source Of Uncertainty, (1) 281e Quad Function Generator, (2) 292e Quad Dynamics Managers, (2) 291e Triple Morphing Filters, (4) 261e Complex Waveform Generators, (1) 259e Complex Waveform Generator, (1) 250e Arbitrary Function Generator

  • fantastic !!

  • That was just great. Thank you so much!

  • Beautiful performance. What a wonderful piece of music! I first heard Oraison on the OHM electronic music CD. I still have not heard the rest of "Fete des Belles Eaux" because the collection of Messaien music that I have does not contain it.

I wonder. Is the re-write you mention... of Oraison on Quartet for the End of Time... is it identical? The reason I ask is because I have found the Quartet sheets at my local library and It would be wonderful to have a copy of Oraison sheets!

  • The version in the Quartet, Movement 5, is called "Louange a l'Eternite de Jesus" and is for cello and piano, so it isn't identical. The melody line, played by the cello, is essentially the same, but the sustained chords in the Ondes Martenot version don't work for piano, so they're played as repeated block chords. You could use the Quartet score as a source for the Ondes Martenot version, but they aren't the same.

  • Wonderful. Thank you for the quick reply. Keep up the great work!

  • Great stuff, Richard.

    As always. =D!

  • Really nice! Are you making a full surround (quad) DVD version for sale?

  • Thank you!

It hadn't occurred to me, but I could release a quad version, as I recorded it in quad. The problem is, release it in what format? What would you want to see, for example?

  • damn i love it richard!

  • thanks, a beautiful performance of a beautiful composition

  • Love It ~ Now I know what Robert Fripp & other modern Ambient Greats must have listened to.......

  • A thing of beauty.

    Many thanks, Nick

  • Beautiful !!

  • Yeaaaa!!!

  • Dear Mr. Lainhart,

Thank you for posting this in every way beautifully executed piece!

    (H)

  • sounding so beautiful on Buchla 200e :)

  • Very impressive!!!!!!!!!

  • Just beautiful. Thanks so much, Richard. jg::

  • awesome!

  • wow, that's the best use of the Continuum I've seen so far, well done

  • Awesome. So nice to see a modular played in this way.

  • Absolutely speechless. Wow! A very beautiful piece and it must have been a lot of hard work. Congratulations!

  • "Infinitely slow, ecstatic" :) From the early '20s to the late '30s was an inspiring era. It's saddening how the world changed in the following years after 1937 due to the war. People moved from a period of intense rebellion in the arts and rare abandon (particularly loved the surrealist and dada movements of the time) to a kind of confused consumerism (like we have now!). Thank you.

  • They should give/discount a full size Haken for your

beautiful playing of this marvelous music...what a demo!

One of the most expressive electronic performances

    I've ever heard.

  • One of my favorite pieces, played beautifully. Wonderful. Amazingly done.

I have a full size continuum for sale for 4k. Or.. I want a Buchla Lightning 3 plus 2k for it.

  • this is so beautiful...thank you so much

  • that was beautiful.

  • Bravo, Richard! An excellent version of one of my favorite pieces.

  • Well Done, Richard. Very Well Done.

  • 1937? Amazing. Sounds fresh and interesting.
