Using the continuum for this is a really brilliant idea. Also, as others have said, the dynamics are excellent. Incredibly tasteful arrangement-great job.
If I'm not mistaken, C. S. Levine himself commented below with praise. Apparently you're on the right track. A+.
The single most beautiful recording of Messiaen I have heard. Deft use of dynamics and timing that I found is often lacking from recordings of Louamge and Oraison. Only an expressionistic musician could understand.
You can view its page on Wikipedia; due to their rarity, these instruments can run well up into the 100 000 range (or even higher). Rental of an ondes is not exactly inexpensive either.
You've reminded me how good the Haken Continuum is Richard. Of course the Buchla must be making a substantial contribution too. Very nice playing and very nice tones. Thanks for sharing.
very nice! I was wondering, can the buchla maintain the 1 cent tuning accuracy of the continuum fingerboard? I interested in making some just intonation music..
Thanks! I haven't tried it myself, so I can't say, but I think it's possible the 200e would be able to maintain 1 cent accuracy. The biggest issue in tuning the oscillators to the Continuum is getting the CV In range settings correct, for which I've found the StroboSoft software tuner invaluable. If you can get the right ranges, you should be able to get the necessary tuning precision. But it would take a lot of tweaking, based on my experience.
great, my fav 20th century piece, with a new timbre, unknown for me. Extremely well played. Do you know if the score can be found for free on the interwebs?
Thank you! As for the score, there's no free version I know of, and this particular transcription is my own, from the version in the Quartet for the End of Time.
The 200e is polyphonic? That's incredible! The Continuum/200e combo is a match made in heaven, in my opinion. Maybe add a Moog Etherwave, but other than that, prefect. This is terrific!
Absolutely loved it! If its not too much trouble, could you list what Buchla modules you use? Im curious as Ive been following your performances with great interest.
Beautiful performance. What a wonderful piece of music! I first heard Oraison on the OHM electronic music CD. I still have not heard the rest of "Fete des Belles Eaux" because the collection of Messaien music that I have does not contain it.
I wonder. Is the re-write you mention... of Oraison on Quartet for the End of Time... is it identical? The reason I ask is because I have found the Quartet sheets at my local library and It would be wonderful to have a copy of Oraison sheets!
The version in the Quartet, Movement 5, is called "Louange a l'Eternite de Jesus" and is for cello and piano, so it isn't identical. The melody line, played by the cello, is essentially the same, but the sustained chords in the Ondes Martenot version don't work for piano, so they're played as repeated block chords. You could use the Quartet score as a source for the Ondes Martenot version, but they aren't the same.
It hadn't occurred to me, but I could release a quad version, as I recorded it in quad. The problem is, release it in what format? What would you want to see, for example?
"Infinitely slow, ecstatic" :) From the early '20s to the late '30s was an inspiring era. It's saddening how the world changed in the following years after 1937 due to the war. People moved from a period of intense rebellion in the arts and rare abandon (particularly loved the surrealist and dada movements of the time) to a kind of confused consumerism (like we have now!). Thank you.

Very beautiful! This could also prove to be a very cost-effective alternative to the ondes Martenot, especially in the future.

Wonderful video! Easily one of the top 200e performances, but I'm guessing you would make a CZ-101 sing beautifully as well.
