No! No no no no no! Percy comes off as such an insufferable asshole (I know it it is all an act), why would any woman give him the time of day? It makes Marguerite seem shallow, that she would overlook the fact that he is a pompous boor just because he is attractive. If Andrews would have played that first scene with a wink, instead of chewing the scenery like a ham sandwich, it would have made this relationship far more believable.
Some how I can see, where characters like Bruce Wayne, and Don Diego Viego, Also known as Zorro, are similar to the Scarlet Pimpernel. It's awesome. :D
So love Jane Seymour. My favorite scene from this part is when she is stopped at the gates and the guard allows her to pass. Plus Jane looks so great in this video in the white and the hat. she is one lovely lady.
Why is it so madly unrealistic to want this to be my life?? The elegance, the etiquette, the clothing, the gentlemen, the romance......sheesh! Wish I could literally look at this and say, "story of my life." Bummer =P
Sir Percy has the best expressions "Sink meh!" "Odd's fish" and my favorite "What is it you frenchies say? Touche?" lol he's so smooth and fun to watch!
at first I was wondering how the actress lady couldn't notice the aristocrat that was smuggled in the carriage... then I thought who wouldn't when you are on a date with Anthony Andrews!
Lesson to any guys watching: You don't have to take a woman to an expensive restaurant to be romantic. Picnics are wonderful, even if you don't pack a pair of musicians/servants and a French aristocrat in the trunk. Cherries or strawberries, wine, and crackers and cheese, shared on a blanket in a pretty park is wonderfully romantic, and cheap!
I am so obsessed with The Scarlet Pimpernel. (hence, my username). I was wondering if anyone has any clue where I could purchase a ring like the one Anthony wore in this movie. I've spent hours searching but I can't find it. :( it would mean a lot to me if anyone had any clue where I could find it. Thanks! :)
Percy "Hm....giant basket, check. Date with the beautiful Marguerite, check. Rescue another from Madame guillotine, check...Sink me! What a marvelous day!"
I'm currently looking through classic literature to become a better writer. I found this movie to be much easier to understand. I love how Percy is pretending to be such a fop.
The fops of 18th century Europe put so much more effort into their character than today's metrosexuals douchbags. I wish David Beckam acted more like Sir Percy.
The what he adds at the end of his I'm a poet and you didn't even know it is brilliant because it's so modern and out of place which makes it seem so funny.
Great movie! I never get tired of watching it. Love all of the cast of actors, the sets and costumes. Anthony Andrews is awesome as the Scarlet Pimpernel and the beautiful Jane Seymour is delicious. A great pair indeed!
@Msratings3 Her little look of confused dismay when he enters in the previous part really says it all! I adore this film...Sir Percy's voice has me in stitches!
@rbutler8273 Actually they are quite accurate. I do theater, and I know the difference because I have been taught by professional costumers, and there is a significant difference from 19th century, and 18th century.
one thing i don't get isn't marguerite supposed to meet percy "as percy" and not as the fop first? here, she sees him flip flopping back and forth. doesn't that ruin the whole point of her finding out that he's acting at the finale of the story?
@wincipoet Yes, I think it's funny too. I mean, at the time, actresses earned more money from their male admirers than from their trade - perhaps she had well placed friends to get such a nice place.
0:06 Chauvelin's face, "This man is mentally retarded."

I like how he kind of used her to get past the gate...but if it's Percy...then it's OK.

Luckily, he keeps courting her in a more passionate way, afterwards.
I doubt at that point he has fully won Marguerite’s heart.
Yes, Percy is funny and even witty, in that scene… but chivalrous ?
And yes, Chauvelin is a treator and doesn’t stick to his word, but at that stage, Marguerite isn’t aware of it, yet.
