Those were the good times. Just the way they dressed and how respectful they were like, how the men let the women sit. Or after they guessed only the guys got up and the women sat, it's called manners and... Most of it... it's gone. Just how everyday life was then is, amazing and, I wish it was still like that today.
Arlene Francis is absolutely hysterical! Love her! She seemed to always be having fun. Dorothy Kilgallen, on the other hand, came across as taking herself way to seriously. This show is fun to watch. Thanks for uploading.
Arlene would have known Martin's German accent. He often used it in plays and movies. In fact, in one of his final roles, Martin played a German psychiatrist in the Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau remake of The Front Page in 1974.
@weightfeather1 This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever read. For me, you've summed up their relationship perfectly. This is exactly what I see when I look at them.
@observer9670 I don't know if he was gay or non-gay, but I hope you're not so naive as to believe that being married is proof that one is non-gay. Rock Hudson was married too, as well as the other millions of gay men who had to marry to satisfy society's prejudices for two thousand years. :)
What's not to love about this? Especially Arlene's reaction when she recognized Martin's voice - Bennett's wife was darling (just like him) and Tony and his wife are adorable!
Does anyone have the 70s verson of What's My Line when Martin Gabel was a mystery guest. I hear it's hilarous because Arlene asks (while blind folded of course) if he was married. I would appreciate it so much! :D
@Kate8790 I have been looking for that episode as well, but have yet to come across somebody who has it. If you find someone who does, please let me know.
Wow, what a great idea and hilarious episode! I'd like to have seen them do another episode and bring in a different relation for each panel member (e.g. a sister, a nephew, a mother, a son) so that they each had to guess more specifically their person (they all figured it out I guess after the discovery of the first husband, lol).
This might be the best MG reveal ever...Arlene's response to Martin's answer was absolutely PRICELESS. You almost can't help but to go back and see it again (and again), and you're still laughing right along! It doesn't get any better than that!!!
What does it tell you when you see the negative comments on such trashy clips, and the positive comments on clips like this? I agree with everyone's wonderful comments here, and think good, clean, classy entertainment like this needs to make a major comeback!
Notice that Tony Randall called Martin Gable "Marty". I wonder if they ever appeared together on Broadway or in one of Mr. Gable's rare movie appearances.
For those who don't know, the four, and their spousal relations on the panel, are: Martin Gabel (top left, Arlene), Richard Kollmar (top right, Dorothy), Florence Gibbs (bottom left, Tony), Phyllis Fraser (bottom right, Bennett). Gabel was an actor himself, as well as a producer/director. Kollmar was an actor, talk show host on radio, and nightclug owner. Gibbs-Randall worked for fashion designer Bill Blass. Fraser-Cerf's may talents include being an author of children's books.
The German voice that Martin Gable used was the same voice he would later use in the 1974 Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau re-make of "The Front Page". He played the psychiatrist who was accidentially shot and kept yelling "Fruitcake!"
A really fun episode! Odd that Tony Randall & his first wife were married over 50 years & never had any kids. After she died he married a MUCH MUCHyounger woman & had two kids with her before he died. Always enjoyed his work. This episode was a fascinating change of pace. THANKS for sharing with us! :)
@displayfireworks1 I totally agree. I wasn't even born until 1983, 16 years after this show ended (minus the awful syndicated version), and I was born in a different country (UK) - and, indeed, I have little idea of who *some* of the mystery guests are (though I know most). And yet I love this show! It's fun without being tasteless; it's witty without being crude; and its celebrities are those who've *earned* that status. I love this show. Thank God for YouTube and generous uploaders.
4:30 >> Here and in a number of other WML clips is evidence that odd-couple Martin Gabel and Dorothy Kilgallen were good friends. Apparently Arlene did not like Dorothy's column, but she liked everything else Dorothy wrote.
It's the memory of Love Sidney. He stayed married to this first wive for ages. when she died young, he married another woman until his death and fathered children at an elderly age. Go Tony!
Now I know what it would be like to wake up next to Dorothy in the morning. She looks so groggy after taking off her mask.
So sad that hard drinking and sleeping pills took her from us much too soon. Sorry to hear that her marriage to Dick, portrayed as ideal on the air, was anything but in real life.
The great Arlene Francis Gabel kicks a-- in this game. Love not only her moment of revelation (and the comment about those who talk too much), but the way she says her husband's name: "Mahtin Gabel-" a duo for 40 years. Mahvelous.
I was googling around and I was reading that Truman Capote had a father son relationship with Bennett and they were very fond of each other. Capote also said when he got criticism/scolding that Bennett sent Phyllis for the job. He said Phyllis was loyal if she liked you, but that if Phyllis didn't like you, you better leave the country. I thought it was interesting.
Many years ago after the syndicated "What's My Line?" ended, Arlene Francis made an appearance in Portland, Oregon where I live to promote her autobiography and show clips from the show. This was one of this clips she presented. How wonderful to see it again and to still remember a good deal of it after all these years. Thank you so much for this.
He was married to her for 50 years, until her death. He later married a hot 25 year old blonde when he was 75. He fathered 2 children when he was almost 80.
Yeah, but that was kind of sweet. He was married for years and years and gave up hope of ever being a father, and then years later he got to have two children. I was happy to hear about that. And he was married to his second wife until the day he died (not that long ago).
Dorothy in a few days will enter the hospital for treatment of drug addiction problems. And she does seem sort of . . . flushed. At (4:28) She seems more playful with Martin than Dick.
