In this, Cloud is the more carefree Shinra Grunt, he's more open and trusting, and in the game often speaks his mind liberally, (and you even find him nearly hurling at one point if you look about for him) he even invites Zack at one point to meet his family with him in Nibelheim, saying he wasn't too confident about meeting them alone since he had promised he would make SOLDIER and hadn't.

Well crisis core ends where ff7 begins like cloud rides the train into midgar where Tifa finds him at the station and asks him to join avalanche. So Cloud and zack have to be stuck in hojo's lab for at least 4-5 years before they both escape and zack dies
