  • I like the name...Love Canal...

  • Thanks for this video I had to write an essay about problems that were caused in the great lakes and couldn't any topics but this is great thanks alot!

  • So many people live close to it. Just think of kindergardeners thinking those chemicals were puddles and they played in the chemicals. So sad.

  • I am sooooooooooooooooooooo sad about this. I hate this story. It is so depressing.

  • I don't think that this story is saying Hooker is to blame... They are just saying that in the Environmental Health history.... bad decisions have obviously been made. That is why the EPA now has strong regulations on things like this. I mean we want Earth to last as long as possible, right? This video is just showing how humans can destroy the planet with bad, selfish decisions.

  • Fascinating story. Excellent upload.

  • my teacher taught us this last year, check out ford v. mann, i heard it was just as bad

  • Hooker Chemical should not have buried the chemicals, but in the end this is all the NY Board of Education's fault. Hooker took the board officials to the site and drilled bore holes into it to show that there were toxic chemicals buried there. But the Govt didn't listen and, facing the possibility that the land would be condemned and taken, they decided to sell the land, for $1. They WERE negligent in burying the chemicals, but they were not reckless...they tried to stop the sale, but couldn't.

  • Hooker even took em to court to try&stop the houses being built once they saw the school board had breached the agreement by developing it-It NEVER woulda leaked had they not developed the land RIGHT ON TOP of the Canal! They dug right into the clay barrier to build houses. But then,of course, the school board denied they'd ever been warned when toxins started leaked out-Hooker had to pay 100s of millions of $ to fix it when 100% of the blame was the government's GREED, NOT Hooker!

  • Hooker said no SEVERAL TIMES but after major political pressure, they ultimately agreed to sell it in good faith for 1$ to help the school board out (they didnt really have a choice) after the board PROMISED MULTIPLE TIMES to NEVER dig more than a foot or two into the ground&to only use it to build a playground for an adjacent school that was not built on the love canal, but then they got greedy &sold the land for residential development-It put a TON of "free" $ into the school board's pocket.

  • PS I'm SO NOT LAUGHING at what happened here - I'm just laughing at the thought of someone that looks and talks just like Joe Pesci being an environmental agent... I did a University thesis project on this disaster and it was TERRIBLE... As per several other comments here, this was NOT Hooker Chemical's fault AT ALL - Its the greedy school board's fault - I saw the deed when I was researching my project, and Hooker was VERY CLEAR that this land was NOT to be used for ANY development.

  • LOOK - Its Joe Pesci's brother at 3:23!!!! Hahahaha!

  • christo930, Hooker may have warned the city about the dangers of residential development around Love Canal. However, Hooker should take responsibility for raping the environment by dumping chemicals. They can't disregard responsibility for that action. You are correct that the city shouldn't have allowed the development and there should have been better oversight in regards to chemical dumping. It’s a disgusting circumstance that will haunt the environment and the people who live on earth.

  • somebody named "Tesla"lol...

  • @MrCamarra I know......What a fuckin cunt

  • Hooker Chemical sold the land, no doubt. But, in its contract, it clearly explained the chemical hazards present. In fact, it sold the land for only $1 to the city after having described the contents of the site, including the contents under the site. However, as with all political entities, the city of Love Canal purchased it anyhow, hid information (information contained within the contract), and allowed both housing and schools to be erected on the lands. How is Hooker culpable?

  • Liberal eco bullshit.

    BOO FUCKING HOO!!!

Go cry for help like you always do.

  • Sort of sad that this Developer had a dream in the 1890s to build a self powered stretch of water front property and thriving community, and by 1980 his development had become a complete failure and disaster for future families.

  • Bow your heads in shame Niagara Falls city council.

  • this story is so misleading. Hooker fought the township for quite a while saying it was totally inappropriate for any kind of residential development. The township threatened to sue Hooker, so they sold it for $1 with an explanation of the land's previous use and t he township used it anyway. Don't blame Hooker for this, blame government.

  • @christo930 you're an idiot.

  • @ajl22586 I suggest you look into this yourself.

  • @ajl22586 From 3:10 on. Just listen to the video. They were told about the chemicals before the sell

  • @christo930

I lived there! yes, Niagara Falls built there when it shouldn't have but when it broke in 1978....Hooker REFUSED to tell us what we were exposed too! so hooker is culpable!

  • @nbouv No, the gov is at fault. Why does everyone assume the gov is any different from any other corporation?

  • @christo930 Not saying the gov't isn't at fault...I am pointing out that Hooker Chemicals was ALSO culpable. BTW-As of yesterday, it was all over the news here that the chemicals are once again leaking into the neighborhood! Just as Lois Gibbs predicted the clay cap would leak! Of course the DEC says there is nothing to be concerned about. I think I've heard that before???

  • @nbouv I don't see how they are culpable. They told the township not to use the land, that the land was loaded with chemicals and gov fought them and used the land anyway. What is Hooker supposed to do?

  • @christo930 What they could have done when this was exposed is to tell us what was buried there! They refused to! Their total lack of any concern for the publics health at this time is what I find them culpable of!

  • @christo930 actuallly, the real blame lies with the City of Niagara Falls Board of education. Was hooker initially responsible for the dumping, yes, they all were, BUT Hooker knew the dangers, and warned any potential buyers..the city was booming with people and the city needed to build schools..they knew the dangers but disregardered the warnings..I am a former resident, i was there..I lived it..these are the facts...like it or not

  • @MrCamarra From what I know, the initial dumping was legal at the time. From what I know, the school board (or the city) threatened to sue Hooker and that is why the deed has the disclaimer on it. What kind of idiot politician would build a school site on a chemical company's dump site? Hooker probably had legal reasons they didn't want to tell. From what I have read, I put all of the blame on the township/school board. What happened to the kids now that they are grown?

  • @christo930 Oh please. Hooker sells the property for 1$ because it was a desperate attempt to place responsibility to someone else. Despicable.

  • @scilabo They sold it because it was going to be taken away regardless and the company wanted to absolve itself from the consequences by adding the disclaimer to the sale. I think it was stupid of them to dump chemicals like that, but they shouldn't take the majority of the blame when they warned of the possible consequences many times before.

  • @scilabo They had no choice, they were being sued. Rather than spending millions of dollars fighting a lawsuit they were going to lose anyway, they sold the property. Had I been running The Hooker Chemical Company when this was going on, I would have put out a full page advertisement in the local paper, that the city was trying to build a school on hooker property where chemicals were buried.

  • @christo930 that would've been intelligent. It's just disgusting the non-chalance with which development went along...

  • @scilabo All of these people want to blame hooker because they can't accept that the gov doesn't care about them either.

  • lol hooker chemical company

  • the power lines at 1:51, can anyone elaborate on the location of these? this shot looks eerily similar to lines that still exist today and cross ridge rd (route 104) just west of model city rd...the transformer towers have since been updated....

  • One word: Capitalism.

  • Greed was part of the issue. But remember that people wanted the company's products and there was no regulation against what they did. Also, and a big point, is that the company told the city what was buried in the canal and the city did not warn the subsequent purchasers. This means the city is liable too.

  • 0:29 She needs to sit down and shut up

  • the epa guy reminds me of joe pesci

  • me2

  • i <3 homework!

  • Hi,it's hard to believe this use to be legal.

  • yup. Greed can break a lot of laws.

  • can, does and always will!
