But Apple did it in a commercial way... you know, with customer service, reliability, and a comment section. I love that it's on Linux, but 95% of Linux-based software is complete garbage. Apple doesn't do it first, no. But they're the first to do it to appeal to everyone, not just "professional" users.

What makes apple actually a good product is that they make their operative system just to one specific assembly of hardware. The hardware may not be all apple, but it is assembled in the same way in every mac so the operative system runs smoothly on a familiar configuration. If you want to get techie and customize a linux distribution for your own use and your computer, then you will probably get better results than with Mac OS X. That is my way of viewing things. Oh! and windows... no comment.

I use both Windows and Linux. The best part of Linux is once you install a system, you don't have to pay for the next release in most cases. With windows though you are looking at a minimum of 200 dollars for each new OS. Both are good systems, and I will be running a demo of my customized Ubuntu at the upcoming church retreat. Oh yeah, you can also customize a Linux Distro way more than Windows.

The debate about which computer(OS) is the best to use is always the issue. It's all about(to me anyways) about the best bang for the buck. Though Mac is a great computer... holy crap look at the price!! Sure it's compact but try working on one or giving it upgrades... no! Windows has great games and lots of software to buy... but you have to constantly be babysitting it with anti-crap. Pick up an old PC and install Linux and you are as right as rain. Cheap, reliable, secure and stable... :-)

I'm glad you mentioned how people automatically think someone is better if they have a Mac. I personally just think that these people just have a lot of money and don't know anything about computers. The hardware, as you said, is exactly the same as a PC. However, it is not even necessarily "premium" hardware. People automatically assume Intel is the best but it actually isn't. AMD is faster and much cheaper. They probably only got the reputation they have just from Apple.

@saif711 actually... on a mass market scale (we're talking about pre-assembled, right? otherwise the altair 8800 would have everything else beat), the Wang 2200 (i shit you not. that's the actual name of the model.) came out in 1973. the IBM 5100 5100 was in 1975. however, these were more for high-end personal uses, like accountants working from home.

however, january of 1977 saw the introduction of the Commodore PET, the first "end-user", "desktop" PC. the Apple II was june 5, 1977.

@micahwllmsn It's all about who you are. When I refer people to a specific OS I think about who they are, if they are easily amazed by pretty colors and not into how computers work, I would say mac. Do they know their way around directories and basic network settings I say (stay) Windows. Rarely, if they say they want a challenge, widen their horizon or just have an OS they feel part of them, not the other way around. I would say convert to Linux/UNIX (personal choice is linux)

You may really love the other linux distro's then. Try Sabayon Linux. It's a distro specially designed for the flashy stuff; as well as has stability and handling with the CPU and memory. Sometimes, though, it is buggy. I wouldn't suggest it as a hardcore OS unless you fully understand compiling and such, though.

As for Windows copying whoever; before the 2k it doesn't even matter, really. This debate is now, in 2009/2010. Not 1980 or whenever. The video in there proved IBM to have the first useful PC. However, i'm pretty sure they came out with an Apple II which is what underground game developers used to create games on. So Windows Vista was the "security dumbed down" version of Windows with a less stable kernel and more flashy stuff. By "stable" I don't mean gets virus's, crashes, or restarts; I mean is able to handle a CPU load efficiently. Windows 7 is supposed to be pretty good with stability; just as good as Mac, if not better..and this is based on the beta, too. The thing is that since Mac switched to intel as a CPU. The average end-user doesn't even use 100% CPU for more than 10 seconds when they have like 90 programs running at once. This was why people used to use Mac for editing, because the processor could handle the workload. Windows couldn't at one point. On Windows 7, they can. Mac will fall soon.

Now for Linux side..Hmmm. Linux has the best "stability" out of Windows and Mac simply because of it's simplistic nature. You can run flux/open and use like .001% of any processor and memory from the GUI, and do anything you want in there. Windows and Mac are too endowed. As for virus's...unless you're on a webserver, or setup for one; you aren't going to get any types of security issues. Updates happen with all distros and Operating systems, for that matter. GUI is simpler than Windows and Mac.

Once more, this goes without saying that Mac has it's up points; as does Windows. As does Linux. Each one is commonly used for a sole purpose in whatever field they are working in. Web and security is generally Linux. Networking and Office use is normally Windows. Media, such as Video, Audio and 3D Modeling is actually used in both Windows and Mac. Most video game developers actually use Windows more than mac for certain things.

Windows is the common operating system. No one has written anything to "messup" a mac yet because not many people are really on it. The people who are, want to sound more important- for the most part, because they are following a "trend". When people write programs to give spyware to macs and popups and every annoying little thing you find with windows, what are you going to say? "Oh well Mac is still better!" Mac has nothing going for it. Period.

Some background information for you. I Run Windows SP3 with NO security features; no virus protection, no firewall; just firefox. I run Gentoo self-build Linux on the other hard disk on the same tower. I use Mac for recording because I am a music major and I work with recording in my school and at a studio for hands-on experience. I program, I script, I audio and video edit, I also work with Cinema 4D. That's background information; this is where I'm getting at with this paragraph:

I have 0 issues with my Windows computer. I go to several of websites daily; rarely go on youtube. Sometimes I would click something that says "your computer has a virus!!!!?!?!?!", which is how "facebook" and "myspace" were considered to have a "virus" at one point. No spyware, Nothing wrong with my Windows computer at all. It works faster than the macs at school. I only have a 2.4ghz processor and 4 gigs of ram. The only time I get pissed at windows is when it restarts once a week for updates.

Mind you, I also keep my computer on for months on end. I have to turn off updates sometimes if I am busy working on audio files or editing images; or maybe even writing papers for class? I use my Linux machine for programming, tweaking, and just having fun. Getting the full use out of my hardware. Please, tell me, what's the longest you have kept your mac on for. I can actually boot to linux now and keep it on for a full YEAR without any errors. Can you do that with Mac?

1) Lisa OS had Cooperative multitasking. Older versions of Mac OS did not get cooperative multitasking until Mac OS 5.

Your text rolling in the background is wrong. MS didn't patent the sudo concept, they patented the GUI that they use for their permission system (UAC). Linux fanboys never read anything correctly and have blown the UAC patent way out of proportion.
