I shorten my strings is during forward 3b weaves, it's less obvious what you're doing that way so the people watching don't see it until it's already happened, keeps them guessing :) I use fairly long strings so I have to do that to pull off corkscrews/wheels. If you wanna see what it looks like there's a decent example at the 1:30 mark of my Sirenia vid.
good work. Try spinning your poi at different lengths. Wrap your poi around your hands to make them shorter so you can do inside moves. Also, try varying your spinning speed and look into using stalls for direction changes.
