The RB30E was a great engine. Trouble is the dumb ass engineers at GMH (as it was known then) decided that even though the relationship between the height of the radiator and the head was all ass about (vapour lock drama's to you dumb little gen y cunts) - the VL cooked heads like a cannibal after a successful village raid. It's just quite befitting that the dumbest white people on earth (that's you gen y cunts) seem to like em. The R31 was a much better car, though the BW diff was shit

At the time they were lighter, sleeker and had a much more reliable drivetrain than the previous model due to the Nissan engines. They were popular amongst the young because being a Holden they lost value quicker and were much more fun to drive. The turbo version was faster than the poor old emissions clogged V8 option. So they were a good price, reliable and were fun to drive. Even now if you can still find one they are worth much more than the other full size domestics at the time.

VL Commodore - apparently Holden evaluated many 6-cylinder engines before deciding on the Nissan inline 6. At one point they were considering Toyota units (at the time their largest 6 was 2.8 litres) and even the Jaguar XJ's 3.6 unit!

Just so u understand, John Bagshaw tied up the RB30E Nissan engine deal in December 1984 in Japan. The Japs tried to sell him the RB25, and when Bags said no "I need the RB30" - they tried to throw in a non-intercooled turbo RB25 at the same price. Needless to say Holden got the RB30 and when the engineers at Fishermans Bend realised that the VL floorpan they'd built around the RB30 and it's 4 speed auto, they realised that the 308/Turbo 350 wouldn't fit. So every VL V8 had a VK floorpan.
