@nakke In practice he can (hopefully will) get life in prison. Maximum is 21 years plus custody (21 år med pluss forvaring). So when 21 years (prison-years) is over he has to be evaluated before he's released. If they don't find him fit for society he goes straight back in.

Amonium nitrate (commonly found in fertilizer with a good ratio of about 36 % nitrogen and up is good when mixed with notromethane, (a racing fuel for funny cars) and some extra alluminum powder for umph. If you look hard enough, you can find it all online.

ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil) is not spark sensitive. You need a blasting cap, and in most cases, a booster. You can hit it with a hammer, run over it with a car, set it on fire... and it will not explode. It takes a strong shock to begin the explosive decomposition process.

I would assume you saw an electric blasting cap embedded within the ANFO, most likely inside a booster. Alternately, they might have been using an EBW (Exploding Bridgewire)... but seems unlikely. And they would still want a booster for that...

No one uses straight electricity to initiate ANFO- if it would even be possible within reason. The amount of energy would have to be tremendous, beyond what would be of use in a practical situation... considering the ease of blasting caps.

im not also sure they had just ANFO in there because they had some nitroglycerine (which i heard can be ignited with electricity) sitting to the side so im guessing they just mixed a whole bunch of explosives together and hoped one of their "igniters" would set off one of the explosives. it was really dangerous and they were lucky no one was injured

You have to have the right fertilizer, it has to be 30-0-0 or it won't work. Also this stuff is very unstable so if you want an explosion you mix 9 part Ammonium Nitrate (fertilizer) 30-0-0 and 1 part alluminum powder and shoot it with a rifle it's very powerful
