  • TRUJILLO!!

  • It's like Cliff and Jason combined.

  • who gives a fuck if he uses a pick or not?! point is, robs a boss at bass

  • Comment removed

  • he uses a pick for the alternating park @0:41, then he throws the pick at the audience

  • that speed with fingers, damn, cliff done it with fight fire with fire, metal militia, whiplash, etc. THATS THE TRUE BASS GODS HAND

  • he's playing with fngers live, but on some parts of this studio version it sounds like he's using pick, and on some like he's using finger

  • I think he plays with a pick and fingers, using separate takes

  • once i play this with a pick...my bass meltdown...

  • Half-distorted bass: welcome to shitty sound. Rob should listen some Rush, now really.

  • @Saggrisch god i love rush

  • @Saggrisch why compare this music to rush?

  • @GetFuckingAngry Where did i compare? I said that his sound is shit.

  • @Saggrisch true and to some cliff burton...

  • @SitotiKurton no look like he is using a pick, and is not xD he got blisters size of the fucking of lemmy kilmister!

  • how do you isolate the bass like that? do you take requests? LOL

  • Cliff>>>Jason>>>>>Rob

  • @Herberttadeu Cool fanboyism, bro.

  • HOLYFUCKINGSHIT, ROB'S FINGERS ARE FUCKING DEVIL'S MACHINE

  • Cliff>Rob>Jason>Ron

  • when he plays those finger triplets it sounds like a fucking machine gun!! :D

  • Best of jason!

  • @Khrysttyan Yup, it's so good he's not even playing...

  • @Khrysttyan WTF

  • Sounds like an engine revving. So dirty!

  • AAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWW YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH

    0:44

    snowmobile bass ftw!

  • Wow it's so distorted it sounds like a guitar. Awesome tone.

  • @runescapeundercover it really doesn't sound like a guitar... haha no offence

  • so why does Metallica insist on turning down the bass on every album since master of puppets???

  • @nigletgook Out of respect for Cliff.

  • @SwingwenuSwagga that makes no sense because cliff would want that bass turned up. I guarantee cliff would have wanted Jason to be heard.

  • @nigletgook For sure. Jason's work on AJFA was high quality but it just wasn't Cliff and I don't think they could stomach that fact. They saw Cliff as an equal which is why there are so many bass solos during his time but I think they saw Jason as beneath them somehow, which is why he got almost none. Even playing live, his biggest moments were playing Cliff's solos. Rob had to earn his stripes, which he has now done so hopefully the mixing job on the next album will be bass-friendly.

  • @SwingwenuSwagga it was pretty Bass friendly in this album as well.. just that the mix was over compressed, if you hear the remastered versions floating around youtube you can hear a mighty bass sound.. and even in the quieter parts of the album you can hear the amazing bass :).. And very well put

  • @SwingwenuSwagga If I were rob i'd be like dude you guys should get over Cliff's death and move on.

  • @nigletgook Because everybody has a hard on for guitars...

  • Rob proving that he is indeed badass.

@nigletgook Probably because no matter how good their new bassist are, they are, above all, Cliff's replacement. It's been considerably lessened, but that's the main reason that they turned Jason down in AJFA.

  • Why there are other instrument hearable on master track, what the hell? Or maybe my idea of what master track is bad...

  • he's a monster

  • wow, i need to learn this on bass!

  • Rob is a GOD!!!

  • what to fuck! if you use your fingers you lose your tone??? LISTEN GEDDY LEE!!

and i can get even dryer and better tone with my fingers!!

  • pick at 0:41 lol

  • @thrasherlml rob never plays with pick >.>

  • @MrBubbles0o0o he said so himself

  • @thrasherlml No, watch the making of this song. He does not play it with a pick, and never will, nor will he with any song, as he does not like that playing style. Simple as.

  • @emmac90903 even if he diddnt he does live for covers sometimes

  • @emmac90903 I suggest you to watch the video of Bleed for me (Black Label Society) live, and you´ll see Rob playing with a pick

  • the fastest fingers in heavy metal!

  • @Basketalbi

    Ha are you kidding?

A bunch of Death Metal bassists are insane... Look up Obscura and Cannibal Corpse.

  • what kind of pedal is he using?

  • @ISoHEoBASSIST i can do this with the Ibanez PD7 and a Ibanez BTB675 Bassguitar .. through a Ashdown ABM 500 evo III (with Compressor)

  • Rob and Jason both have their different sounds. Jason has the more fast pace and loud tone, Rob has the steady and deep bass that blows my dual sub woofers in my car :)

  • @naknak95 Yeah, Jason's more audible, Robert's more felt.

  • For 3 Peoples All NightMare's long !!!

  • awesome bass!!!!!!!

  • Rob plays bass at infernal speeds :D

  • ^^^^^ I gotta get myself one of those. Robots that play bass. what would they think of next?

  • too bad you can't hear his bass on DM.. just like very metallica record. bass too low.. lame.

  • @nigletgook Tell that to Master of Puppets and the "Black Album." Those bass levels were perfect. (Especially "Black Album's.")

  • @nigletgook friend, you are so deaf, because y hear the bass perfectly in dm

  • How do u get ur bass to sound like tht?

  • @killumoron It's the original track

  • How does this guy move his fingers that fast?!?

  • @thelegendoflink52 a lot of practice. lol

  • @thelegendoflink52 That really fast part at teh beggining is played with a pick.

Belive me i know, i saw the fly on the wall videos when death magnetic was still in the making the rest is all finger

  • Comment removed

  • @thelegendoflink52 nvm there is some more pick further down but still its a mix between both

  • @Yenasty5 Yep. He's not called a mothaplucka for no reason.

  • good, but never as good as Cliff.

  • for all the guys who say he is using a pick, he doesnt

watch this video to see how he plays /watch?v=YOi8suJTwx8&feature=related

  • rob is a macheeeeeeeeeeeeen

  • is he using his fingers or pick in this? sounds awesome!

  • @wilddcoyote is his finger check this video /watch?v=YOi8suJTwx8&feature=related

  • SIIIICCCKKK

  • Awesome! Just out of curiosity, where did you get this track?

  • @garrettkirkthompson ripped from guitar hero

  • @Linkaara Sweet. Thanks.

  • Big Muff Pi?

  • awesome

  • Jason Newsted thumbs down this video lol

  • @razhul04 hahaha HA!

  • @razhul04 this is a typical metallica fan, nobody gets you, you are a pretentious bitch, just like james and lars

  • @razhul04 lmao

  • Comment removed

  • @ysezer24700 Honestly could you have made a stupider comment? in fact don't answer that

  • @SecretlyAwsome ..."stupider"?

  • @williamtrevormcneil wow i don't remember wording it like that, sorry for my grammer.

  • @williamtrevormcneil lol...i see what your getting at......JA DU IST EIN GRAMMER NAZI......but its k....cause its funny

  • @ysezer24700 Lemmy must be gay then :)

  • @ysezer24700 wow what a fucking dumbass YOU are.

  • @ysezer24700 PLAYING WITH A PICK GIVE THE BASS SOUND MORE CLARITY AND SOUND DIPSHIT!!!!!!! Obviously you know nothing about instruments!

  • @icee562 More attack, maybe. The rest is subjective. I find using a pick kills my subtlety and might add some unwanted noise.

  • @JeOma666 Tom uses picks

  • OS, seriously:

Statement: "PLAYING WITH A PICK MAKES YOU A GAY!!!"

    Retort: "Your gay"

I weep for the future. I really do.

  • @ysezer24700 Your gay

  • Songs like this make me proud to play bass<3

  • Trujillo-----------Newsted

  • Some of you assholes sound like real amateurs when debating the pick/no pick playing by Robert. Of course he plays both ways, what the fuck is the matter with ballsacks? I have a green pic from a show that Rob tossed out to the crowd for fuck sakes LOL.

  • what a mighty bass sound he's got! well done Rob!

  • Trujillo used a pick for some parts on recording of this. Watch the recordig video

  • I'm just gonna make this very clear... Rob does not use a pick ok??? And for the record, and for all those who might have forgotten, Jason Newsted played with a pick, and would that make him a pussy? I don't think so. And by the way, how did u isolate the bass track from the rest and still keep the song in the background? I think it's genius

  • @scottdylan20 It's from guitar hero. They use the master tracks for guitar hero and if you know how you can rip the tracks from it.

  • BLEED!

  • @qwertycommunicator

Seriously they kick their asses. BUt you shouldn't compare them at all but saying cliff is the god of bass(most people do ) is just wrong.

  • Is he using some kind of distortion?

  • Sounds like parts of the song are played with pick and others with fingers...

  • demasiado bueno!!! excelente!!!

  • @PatsUnbeaten HA HA Im sure he plays other songs live and solos....YES! he is a great bass player!

  • I don't really the chorus but the bass during the verses is really cool

  • Rob has some serious endurance to play like that and sustain it for as long as he does with his fingers!! impressive!!

  • John entwistle and jaco kicks all the bass players asses in metallica.

  • @MeTaLzHearT Where do James Hetfield and Ron McGovney rank? They both played bass in Metallica. James first, Ron second.

  • he use a pick for the extreme fast part that even cliff cant do, the other parts he used 3 fingers thats why it sounds like a pick

  • @luis9211 but live u can see dat he still plays da fast parts with his finger

  • playing with a pick makes u gay

  • @rkosym no it doesnt

  • PIcks!!!!!!!!

  • no need to argue or debate. Cliff was bad ass and will always be remembered as OG Metallica. life goes on and there could be no better replacement than Rob. It is cool so many of us care. Rock on

  • @undergirl0714 If you watch the video he posted in his comment, then it just proves he doesn't use a pick. Its a sarcastic comment I guess you could say.

  • didnt know trujillo was this good (dont follow trujillo too much to be honest) but this is a great bass, is heavy, fast and pretty strong, nice!!

  • well when ive sen him play this live he doesnt use a pick

  • OMG WTF LOL did i say OMGb already @dethmag im sick of folks saying new metallica suck.....they can chew on a dick

  • @petfireball Indeed :D

  • Rob plays with, and without a pick, what the hell. How fuckin perfect is this dude for the band... FUCK!

  • ROB TRUJILLO IS A GOOD BASIST...BUT JASON NEWSTED WAS SO MUCH BETTER AND CLIFF WAS A GOD OF ROCK

  • He can play both with a pick and without, but he almost always plays with his fingers. The only time he uses a pick is when he is going for that super percussive, tight sound. I play mostly finger picking but sometimes you just can't get the sound you want without a pick. Picks do not make you a pussy, if your ego won't let you use a pick when it is a better musical choice then you are a pussy and a bad musician.

  • @sassyslutysexy he is using his fingers /watch?v=YOi8suJTwx8&feature=related

  • @sassyslutysexy

I refuse to use picks because every great bassist that has ever lived looks down upon them. If you take the thrash and death metal bassist, well they are just a throw away bandmember, sad but true, All they do is thicken the sound. If you are looking for good bass lines look somewhere else.

  • @Basketalbi Pick bassists aren't looked down upon because they use a pick, they are looked down upon because they have bad tone, or suck. Sometimes they choose to blend in with the band, they have small egos.

IMO, fingerstyle should be used for funk and jazz. It rarely sounds good in metal.

If you want a good tone = Pick

If you want speed = Fingers, at the sacrifice of tone.

  • @Chr1sda4

Well you are saying it yourself, most metal bassists are useless and just there to thicken the sound a bit. If they don't have another role in the band they are pretty much replaceable. I just went to a death metal gig a week ago and saw some pick bassists and it was emberassing to watch them. The bass was pretty much townd down to the point where you can barely hear it. If you wan't speed go for a pick and strumm like crazy but if you want rythm and feeling go for FINGERS.

  • Comment removed

  • @Basketalbi i dont know if you know this but im pretty sure bass....being the lowest sound of the band.....is meant to thicken the sound....so thats not a throw away member..

  • @sassyslutysexy YOu are so gay.

  • this is why people need to stop calling pick players pussies, i play with both as well and its annoying seeing people bring down other bass players like that just because their preference is different.

  • when i saw them on the death magnetic tour, rob picked most of, if not all of, the entire show

  • Real bassist never plays with pick, My opinion

  • @loverman0o0 i use both, different sounds are created for what is needed during my bands songs

  • @loverman0o0 and what is your definition of "real bassist"?

  • @ElxCookuey maybe I just believe in Cliff Burton

  • @loverman0o0 well yeah cliff was an awesome bass player but if you think trujillos not a real bassist then you should definately check out the work he did with infectious grooves. i always felt like hes wasting his talent in metallica. no disrespect to anyone by the way haha

  • omg he is using a fucking pick, check this ""watch?v=Wtns5EXH_q0"" at 5:53 ¬¬

  • @holaadios12345

He uses both, depends on the sound that is needed on the song.

  • @holaadios12345 so what?

  • @holaadios12345 see him play it live he dosent use a pick

  • @holaadios12345 naw actually he's finger picking

  • @holaadios12345 dude, that's not a pick, it's his gallop technique. They just made his tone somewhat clicky, which is what lots of bassists prefer their sound to sound like on the album, less mids.

  • @holaadios12345 : Naaaa at "Nimes" He uses his fingers ! !!!!

  • @holaadios12345 Yes, he is^^ Or can you play this with fingers on a 5 String Bass? xD

  • @MrMarvinXD pretty sure robert can, saw this song live at mexico city, and if i can im 100% sure he can too

  • @holaadios12345 he ever use that fingers

  • @holaadios12345 he always uses her fingers

  • @MrPantallica69 I'd say that cliff is 1000 times better than robert regarding their musicianship, but in technique you gotta admit robert's got a little better technique

  • @silveroon009

    Robert = 25 years+ expierence

    Cliff = 6-9 years perhaps?

  • @Clike666ness cliff started playin bass in 76, so 10 years

  • @MattBodossian

Kay so 10 years versus 30 years (i looked it up).

If cliff had that same experience he would've been alot better.

  • @Clike666ness he already was alot better in terms of lead bass playing. compare robs orion bass solo to cliffs. cliffs kills it with feeling and tone. robs rhythm bass playing may be a bit tighter and cleaner and cliffs, but i still love cliffs more. its more rough and old school sounding.

  • @MattBodossian

Oh don't get me wrong, Cliff is my favoruite. Still, if Cliff would be alive now the world would be destroyed, especially if they would play orion and the call of ktulu right after each other.

  • @MattBodossian Cliff probably plays the Orion solo with more feeling because hes the one who wrote it. He understood the song more than Rob because the time it was written he was the Bass player.

  • @javenx8 cliff was just all around alot better of a lead bass player. no one plays lead bass like cliff, some come close, rob is not one of them. rob is a fucking badass rhythm bassist tho.

  • cliff practiced five hours + a day.

    every day.

  • @boilingpoint3

Yeah... i know that... But imagine him with those extra 20 years of experience. That was kinda my point.....

  • @MrPantallica69 i know but i loved him in Suicidal Tendencies

  • Rob is a monster!

  • Erickbassrock is true :O look the mexico live :O

  • rob is beast. Love him in Suicidal Tendencies more.

  • Why is there no videos of the drum track? All Nightmare Long came on the GH:M disc, so it should be obtainable...

  • The bass and Guitar solo are the most badass things in this song.

And so far i think death magnetic is a good album.

I pesonaly think it's better than the black album.

  • rob trujillo = greatest tallica bass player ever

  • fuk yer finger chank form hell
