So we are all supposed to assume all people in history were heterosexual and gays didnt exist yet. Right. There is nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to defend. To me that whole "defense" argument seems a little homophobic.
I'm really mixed on this topic. Maybe it should be kept private after they are dead. I was a Gay Soldier. Retiring before DADT was repealed. I served for 20+ years, in silence, fighting for freedom. A second class citizen, and to some "An Abomination Against God!" Like these stars, I could not risk being "Outed". Had I died in conflict, while serving, I would want my story to be told. What better legacy to leave for young LGBT youth. Very successful people were like them, and it's OK to be Gay!
Most people under 40 don't even know who a lot of these people are. And if they had gay affairs go ahead and write it. There have been a number of books about these people that exposed affairs and there was not this kind of outrage. I look forward to reading this book. And Whoopie--it's the man who wrote the book's life too. He was well known in Hollywood circles for years. If it's the truth there is nothing wrong with writing it.
I think it helps to out homophobes and people who are secretly gay and make anti-gay laws, but other than that it's a slippery slope, morally, I think. It can be very painful coming out no matter what age, and I think it should be a person's choice when, normally. These people are dead though, and a lot of times friends and family already know whether they say it or not.

Of course celebrities are going to be incensed other celebrities are being outed long after they are dead. Forget the hypocracy of it all.

FINALLY I can agree with Elisabeth. That was a very well-articulated statement.
