  • Iorek: yes i have a contract with the child

lol that wasnt in teh book

  • How did they manage to fail so badly when they had everything they needed to make it good?

  • THis movie sucked dick, but don't let that deter you from reading the books, british versions if possible. Literally the best series I've read in my whole life.

  • One of the best series of books I've read. This movie failed me entirely, as it did everyone else, hence why they aren't making the other two. PLEASE don't let it prevent you from reading the books if you haven't!

  • Transformers lost the oscar for best special effects to this movie HOW?!?!?!?

  • @MRauTObt I had to agree with the oscars that year, Golden Compass' effects were amazing, Transformers were also but not as effectively used as the Golden Compass

  • @SuperHeroMania i nominate your comment for biggest WTF i have seen in the past 10 years.

  • @EvazivSounds oh shut up

  • @DeathlyDavid just because it's cool doesen't mean it's true and real.

  • this is the worst movie i ever seen :-|

waste of time dont even try to buy it because it sucks.

  • what 2001 movie?????? is this part II?????? I'm so confused by the beginning intro of this trailer.

  • @MrDetwaa It's referring to the Lord of the Rings.

  • haha it's frankie from skins! :D

  • Such a terrible movie compared to the books, honestly made them into kids movies :( They are not kids books.

  • I was sooo dissapointed when i found out they weren't completing the trilogy, the books are better but they always are, however the casting was PERFECT especially lyra and mrs coulter! I LOVED IT.

  • The movie was rushed. It was like a trailer for the book (which i haven't read). A lot of good ideas but they aren't developed in the movie. Made me want to read the book though

  • wtf ending they kill god how the fuck do you kill god

  • If you love America don't watch this movie. Pure trash is what this gay ass golden compass movie is.

  • Recent interview with the director, Chris Weitz says 'If I'd had final cut, it would've been a different story. They felt [Studio bosses] they couldn't deal with having a film that was going to cause religious controversy.' So they stripped key scenes & elements from the final edit just before release.

Bill Donohoe, of the Catholic League for Religious & Civil Rights, called on parents to boycott the film, which worked in the US, however the film still made an incredible $400 million worldwide.

  • Just seen The Golden Compass One thing they could maybe do is in the next one have them trying to take over our normal world and we cannot stop them so the kids and demons come here to save it.

  • I really hoped for a second movie to this :( IT WAS SO GOOD I LOVED IT!

  • ... so everyone could read this and notice the injustice

  • curses rain upon those who ruined this movie :( :( :(

  • where are the daemons in that? I saw them once... seriously? they're a major part of the book!

  • I forget if I had asked this already, but what was the guy's name who was set to play as Iorek Byrnison before Sir Ian McKellan came onboard? I liked the first guy's voice a lot more. I never pictured Iorek as an old bear.

  • bring on the subtle knife, i want angels and the metatron to get involved. they were awesome...

  • Loved the book. Loved the movie. I wish they'd made a second :/

  • The movie is good! But I did enjoy the book!

  • The Book was great!

    The movie fuckin sux

  • anyone know the name of the music starting at 0:33?

  • @ravendors I believe it's called "The Great Eatlon", it's by James Newton Howard, and it's from "The Lady in the Water" soundtrack.

  • why would you stamp a shit franchise onto a movie trailer if they were going to do something good (admittedly false but would've worked) try putting a connection to STAR WARS (original trilogy)

  • The second film will not be made because it insults the Catholic Church. strangly enough. I hate how the movie industry is inslaved to the Occults of the world

  • @GCmediacourse The word you're looking for is "cults," not "occults."

  • @waterkeeper511 No really thats what I said

  • @GCmediacourse What are you talking about? You said "occults," not "cults." The word "occult" just means mystery, or secret, and it refers to things like the supernatural (NOT religion). You were thinking of the word "cult" which means a group that people blindly follow.

    No big.

  • @waterkeeper511 I probably ment Cult.

  • 1:43 Collin DUE Cyborg 16 - 25 -- Collin Wins = The GOOD owns the best gear, then, from where Collin Wins, returns the gear to the GOOD --

  • It would hvae been a lot better if Terrence Malick had written/directed this, since he can deal with creating beautiful new worlds.

  • This movie sucked ass!!! I don't know who in their right mind liked this piece of shit movie!!

  • This movie is waaay under rated.

  • Nicole Kidman is miscast...Angelina Jolie would have been a better option for Ms Coulter

  • I thought Coulter had black hair?!

  • such a nice trailer but such a shit film

  • tumbs up if you want a second movie!

  • Dark side of Catholicism, this movie is so awful

  • Please, I want the second movie too. This movie is great. ;))

  • the books are sooo good the movie ruined it.

  • This is number 1 on my list of "I can't believe it didn't get a sequel" :(

The books are great and despite how movies normally aren't as good, this movie (in my opinion) was really good... the rest of the books deserved to be brought to life on film!

  • I want the music. its good.

  • Yumm... Simon McBurney

  • It's just dumb..where the Jewish and Christian god is real!..those stories of him and Jesus are proved to be in the bible!..so don't compare our god to those gods that aren't real, because there is no comparison

  • @Shzaydancingtiger Lol your god isn't proven. The bible is a book written by men. It has insights that any person of age and wisdom could've written, without a divine excuse. It also has evidence of the ignorance of man as brought about by his culture and limitation of the time.

  • @Shzaydancingtiger woah someone take this guy home to jesus

  • @AkasukiKain4545 because this Greek and other gods arent real, like seriously..olympus?..the guy who held the sky up...n them

  • @Shzaydancingtiger The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree, makes perfect sense-Atheist poster. You call Greek mythology not real? At least its more exciting and epic. Trojan horse? etc.

  • @DeathlyDavid Pahaha so true.

  • @jagermeister54 that lady is nothing but a zealot, the books were masterpieces and much better than the films

  • I WANT THE SECOND MOVIE!!!

  • @INDUSTRIELL4N74R35 I want the first movie again.......just better

  • @Werebudgie I actually agree, I want them to redo this film properly

  • Such a shame. The books were so good and the movies so bland and uninspiring. I guess that's what you get when you take a series of books the author has confessed are about "killing God" and try and make a family friendly movie out of them.

  • @jagermeister54 You don't deserve to know you lazy excuse for book seller. Watching the movie instead of the book? How can you hope to get any answers. You've shamed all book sellers. Go fuck yourself.

  • @jagermeister54

In the last book, Asriel Tries to kill God. Well, I won't tell you if he does or not. I don't think it's all that bad of a thought. I mean, other writers kill off Greek and Pagan gods, so what's the problem with having the idea to kill the Jewish and Christian deity?

  • @AkasukiKain4545 a hell of a lot harder to set up that boss-fight as an author. Greek gods and such were supposed to be interacted with, their temples were physically reachable. Heaven is emphemeral as christ. (pun intended). I'd bomb jerusalem in my novel, if i wanted to kill god. Not very significant? maybe not, but neither was it so significant when greek myth characters were murdered, that happened all the time in stories.

  • A wasted opportunity, it should have been a lot more faithful to the books

  • this movie destroy the story of the book

  • its just a crappy cast, hope that IF they do the second part, which is actual the best, they do place the character better. especially lyra and the boy, master of the knife. get that kiddys away.

and they should try to get the view possible, which is shown in the book. cut from the other chars. splitted minds. very good book. read it. enjoy it. looking forward...

  • this looks crap

  • the books were amazing the movie was shit

  • Does anyone know where I can get the music from this?

  • This movie wasn't perfect, but it still would've deserved a sequel

  • OMG that girl at 2:01 is the girl in skins!!

  • Honestly, the trailer was better than the film itself. I read the book a couple of years back after seeing this trailer, and I expected so much more. Wouldn't it be great if so many films were just as good as the way advertisement portrayed it to be?

  • I love this film and think that it's one of the most overlooked and underrated Fantasy films since 2000 (along with Stardust and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). Visual effects were decent. Nicole Kidman was stunning and very beautiful villainess. Dakota Blue Richards and Daniel Craig were great too. Hope they'll make a sequel

  • @Magnolia296 Until u read the book :(. I mean just watching the movie, ya its pretty good.

Reading the book.. it's a huge disappointment.

  • Due to christian and catholic protests about the movie being anti-religious this movie will not have sequels... Dude.. Really? what century are we in? Its amazing these evil, controlling people are still around, just behind closed doors. Way to go guys!! You have been and still are the worst people that have ever existed.

  • @EnergyRider1 I think you should read the books, seriously, i know you will like them because they are the best anti-catholic books i've ever read. The whole trilogy is about what you just said, it talks about how the church controls people and censures everything that is enjoyable, so somebody gets pissed and decides to destroy god itself (i dont wanna spoil you anymore but the trilogy is hell better than this movie and you can find the audiobooks here in youtube, check them out.).

  • i love this movie!

  • I'm rather afraid to see this movie, because I love the books so much....I heard they butchered it :(

  • @ABookwormAndProud *SPOILERS*

Indeed they did, the storyline is a complete mess, everything is wrong.Jhon Fa is dead or something because he never appears in the movie, Billy costa loses his daemon and the thing which annoys me more is lord asriel being a good, kind person (daaaaw ¬¬). Still the best thing about this movie is Iorek because he keeps his personality from the book and if you ask me its not a bad movie but the adaptation is horrible. btw the movie doesn't end where the book does.

  • The freedom of will being challenged. The truth being seen only when you allow yourself to see it and not be influenced by control.I don't see this as being an against God film, I must be missing something!the only anti christian theme I see "is the reference to the damons each traveler carries!Which , I see a lot of people christian and non christian carry around with them and attach themselves to others.

  • @2blakandbold You do realize that in the later books the main characters go to war against God and kill him, right?

  • @TheCritRocket If I was talking about the book , I would have mentioned it!Read my comment before responding!

Obviously , i did not read the book!

  • @2blakandbold They were coming out with a trilogy. Also, the Calvinist Church, in the film as well as the book, is portrayed as the ultimate evil plaguing the world.

  • I see Sarah Palin on a broom stick!!!!Oh ..wait that's Christine O Donnell!

  • Nice!

  • This movie was the biggest barrel burst 2007 and its marketing experts are only allowed to handle the deep fryer by McDonald's.^^

  • 'eard this is shit

  • This teaser... feels so cheap...

  • Will it be a second movie? There are three books I think.

  • i have seen the movie but the ending was like there should be another part !?

    that sucked

  • I really liked this movie, I don't normally like family movies either.

  • I love the scene at 2:06

  • I understand book adaptions usually cannot be as good as the book. But this movie left out and changed so many things that I was so disappointed. The only thing I liked was the cast (except Daniel Craig). This movie absolutely destroyed the masterpiece, His Dark Materials.

  • omg!! this movie was so good!

  • I was SO UPSET with this movie!!!! The book was absolutely amazing. All three left me begging for more, and they had so much imagination in it, and when I saw the trailer for this movie, and then heard all the news about people (mostly Christian parents) who were belittling it before it came out I was like "Ok, they're gonna make it kick ass justy to prove them all wrong!" and.......I have never been more wrong about something in my whole life......I give it two thumbs way way down!

  • Is this based on Northern Lights?

  • @ginnyharryfan22 it's the exact same book, they just changed the title for US readers and viewers (like they did with the first Harry Potter)

  • For those that were not even aware of these books this movie has sparked quite the interest in getting to know the original version of the stori instead of the watered down drivel they put on the silver screen.. All in all I can't say them undertakin the task of puttin the words to film a horrible move.. Brought a whole demographic of fanz :)

  • I'm not afraid to say it because it's the naked truth; this movie was the complete and utter rape of a masterpiece.

  • @Spacedragon1000 agreed.

  • @Spacedragon1000 I completely and totally agree!

  • I'm still pondering why New Line named this the next LotR if it was under 2 hours, didn't finish the narrative of the book, and didn't have the details and themes present in the novel. Chris Weitz should not only be allowed to make a director's cut, but finish the story of the next two novels. (which he wrote scripts for.)

  • Guys, see my video using this film that includes a meaningful and beautiful song: watch?v=y44rYV5HRiM

  • heykönte echt so schön sein wenn mich einer vor dem allein sein rettet!

  • THE BOOKS ARE AMAZING! The movie on the other hand, was dissapointing :(

  • I'd stick with the books, BETTER. The movie was a piece of shit. Adding up epic music is not gonna fool us to think it is really good.

  • I'm angry that it's not better. I don't think they could have found a better cast. Dakota blue richards looked perfect and she acted brilliantly

The studio was too chicken of the catholic church

they tried to please everyone and ended up pleasing no one. the catholic church still lambasted them and the biggest fans of the novels were left feeling cheated.

But then i blame chris weitz for the ending--ugh! it was one of the best book endings I've ever read and they CUT IT OUT!

  • ppl! they could have made it better, but it was made for americans! thats why they had to butcher it so badly!

i actually think some parts of this film are pretty good, especially the ice bears and daemon animations

  • I loved both movie and novels. It's sad that we won't see the end of the trilogy in film.

  • I really don't understand why so many people say it isn't like the book--it IS! They switched the order of two events (bolvangar and svalbard) and changed the ending (or rather, ended it before the real ending), but otherwise it is REALLY faithful to the story. Considering how badly some movies butcher the books they're based upon, I wouldn't really consider this a disgrace. Actually, I thought it was quite good. Harry Potter was much worse, in my opinion.

  • eragon had to be the worse film adaption of all time in my opinon :/

  • @chainedhearts1 Eragon wasn't good to begin with though

  • the film was quite good but nowhare near as good as the book but at least kate bush made a song for it :D shes a legend :P

  • I love the book series and they casted it perfectly in my opinion, daniel craig and nicole kidman were perfect for their charachters. However, the special effects of the daemons aren't all that great and the story it's self doesn't match the story of the book. Go read the book before you watch the movie, its much better anyway

  • I agree. What Tthe producers did to The Northern Lights (yes, that is what it is really called) was disgusting. Pray that sequels are not made.

  • steampunk, witches, pirates, polar bears? wtf?

  • I have never read the book and I had never heard of the golden compass until they came up with the movie but ,I found it extremely boring ,I was about to leave the theater where this movie was being exhibit because I couldn't bear watching it anymore. How disapointing it was for me the ending was rubbish I think everyone was expecting something better from the ending.

  • i agree, this is is like the worst adaptation fantasy trilogy ever! my cousin, dad, and brother say its so stupid, don't understand why people like it so much, and it was a flop. its such an embarrassing, lame, and boring as hell movie.

  • Comment removed

  • The books were good. Don't expect them to make either of the other two books into movies tough. Waay waay to taboo. They did a fair job on this movie though; of course not as good as the book but still good.

  • great movie but it think that they could have picked a better lyra. she seems too stiff and lyra is more of a carefree girl from the books i've read. but overall great movie :3

  • when was this movie released? how come i never heard of it :S

  • I LOVE the book

  • Really good choices of actors. I'd have made a better Lyra in my opinion though :P... appart from the fact I can't act and a bit too old.

  • 1:24 I think that's Derek Jacobi?

  • i loved this movie though i hardly doubt that the rest of it will be produced :( though it has made me want to read the books again lol

  • the ending was disappointing. but i still LOVE the movie. Mrs. Coulter is my favorite character through out all the books. I love her deoth. and i hope they make the other 2 movies

  • This movie was a bit disappointing, and no, I haven't read the books, but yes, the ending was very disappointing. I do hope that if there are going to be any sequels, they will be be a bit better.

  • i think if the producers had considered marketing this more as a darker movie sort of like the twilight series then it would have had a greater impact. i love the books and I certainly do not see them as a book for kids in my opinion. And yes, they should have kept the ending in - that was one of the most interesting parts!

  • Well baby goats can't read can they. o-o

  • Not a book for kids,i read them when i was 12 and i am reading them again and i am only 13

  • hey there - well i guess wat im trying to say is that the themes in the story seem to be more adult like to me when i read them - im not saying it cant be for kids - but it seems to be more for older kids i guess.

  • marketing the movie as the next lord of the rings was a big mistake.

  • @Hueglow yeah, LOTR was pretty epic in its adaption to film and has become a legend in filmaking. This..was very forgettable.

  • @Hueglow Agreed, it raised expectations way too high. New Line was simply trying to cash in.

  • @Hueglow yeah. The movie is not even near the book.

  • @Hueglow

I love this, it's my new favorite thing ever, but the movie does NOT compare at all to any of the Lord of the Rings movies.

  • @AkasukiKain4545 The books do, both trilogies were fantastic

  • @SuperHeroMania

Yes, they were. I should probably read the Lord of the Rings, shouldn't I?

  • @AkasukiKain4545 If you read His Dark Materials and liked it, then you'll definitely like The Lord of the Ring's book

  • @SuperHeroMania

    Thanks.

  • @Hueglow Not really, both books were excellent and gained massive fans, and the movies could have done the same if they did not ruin the style of the novel when making this film

  • ya can't compare the movies to the books for anything, cuz the books are obviously always gonna be a hundred times better! the movie was really well done!!

  • omg. fantastic film found it funny :). i found a copy at "bigmovies4free" - hope they make another :P

  • this movie was a HUGE disappointment..And what was with that ending ? What a joke!

  • did you read the books? the ending of book one goes right into book two...but they didn't put it into the movie...like the girl falls through a portle into another world...and it's like whoa what just happened and then you have to read the second book or you'll never nooo...the books are absolutely fantastic!

  • One of the huge changes from the book was Lord Asriel's personality. I LOVE THE BOOKS but the movie was a little dissapointing.

  • @sillyaccent Isn't that always the case? Just got the trilogy and am almost through the first book. The movie makers take a GREAT story and think they can improve it. They always fail with the exception of LOTR (which i have not read yet). Eragon was a great story (read the trilogy 7 times, waiting on that 4th book Chris! can you hurry up) the movie was absolutely horrible. It really didn't even stand on it's own. Just too much for a movie unless it was 10 hours long (which I would love).

  • this movie was shite compared to the amazing

books, I'm sooo annoyed they didn't put

    the important bits in.

they just made it all perfect and kiddy.

  • they making a second movie?

  • Can somebody tell me if there is gonna be a movie about the subtule knife (maybe wrong spelling)?:)

  • yes there will :) and it's subtile knfe XD

  • And do you know when? I can't wait!

  • If I hear one more idiot say that the Pullman books are blasphemy, I think I`ll murder someone. The books are not against God, and they are not against religion either. There is nothing wrong with believing in God. The books are against CORRUPT RELIGIONS that do bad things in the NAME of God.

  • Daniel Craig did a phenominal job in this.

  • The movie wasn't as bad as some other book adaptations (Eragon) but it wasn't nearly as good as Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.

They played down many things from the book like the church and the death of some children.

Still, it was quite enjoyable, although it's unlikely that we're going to see the sequels.

  • it's a trilogy book. I don't really like the movie because it's a little bit of boring. The book is much good. Better read the books because it is more fun that watching the movie. I love this book!

  • This movie is horrible. The only thing they kept the same as the books was the characters. THEY CHANGED THE ENDING!!! I only read the first book and it was amazing (one of those books that you read in a day). I think the only reason I didn't like the movie is because I read the book.

  • yeah, it was pretty pissed off when I saw it in theaters, I kinda wanted to walk out so It wouldn't ruin the original ending I remembered from the book. But hollywood tends to do that. LotR was the same. And I'm betting they're going to totally fuck up The Road. Keep in mind though that transferring mediums is a pretty difficult thing to do.

  • i'm going to watch this movie just to do my part in saying **** you to the church.

    gotta love video on demand.

  • @letterpool Glad to see your a loving individual

  • do any of u guys known when the 2nd movie is coming out ???

  • It's a brilliant movie actually, all you crying religious. Please DON'T watch the movie. It dissapoints me to think retards are watching it and crying over the fact it's "against" the catholics.

    It's just pathetic.
