How to change file type:

Drag the AAC version of your ringtone onto the desktop. Delete the AAC version of the ringtone on itunes. A screen should pop up, click "Keep File". Open up "Desktop" in file location. On the upper-left hand side of the file location screen, there show be a pull down list called "Organize". Pull down that list. Click on "Folder and Search options" go to the "View" tab. Uncheck "hide extension for known file type". Go change the file type and drag it back onto itunes.(:

What do I do if I can't remove the 30sec track from the library without it going in the trash? The dialog box only shows 2 buttons to click: delete and cancel. If I can't get it to the ringtones "box" in iTunes does this mean that I won't be able to use it on my iPhone?

@gentlemenpreferblond Click the delete button as it's says in this video, then you have 2 options: cancel or remove. Click remove and it's going to give you 3 options: cancel or keep file or move to trash. Then click keep file, and then just keep following the video. and that's it :D

Part 1

This really works but it took a while to figure out. Hopefully you all can benefit from the time it took me to figure it out. The preference option is under your Edit lits. The AAC encoder option is on the General tab, then on the Import Setting button. Follow the instruction until you get to the part in opening the file in Window Explorer does not automatcally show file extentions. So you will need to got to your control panel and in the File Options folder.

How to turn m4a to m4r on windows 7?

@Marquuuz find the file, single click, hit "organize", then "folder options".

Then, 'view' tab.

On the list, about 1/3 of the way down is a checkbox 'hide extensions for known file types' - uncheck the box. Hit 'ok'

Double click on the file name, you should see the extension, change it, and follow the rest of the video.

its easy to overlook the step where you delete the original aac file otherwise itunes wont recognize the ringtone and wont appear in the iphone section. So take note, delete the aac file from the itunes list before adding the m4r to the playlist.

For iTunes 9.X, there doesn't appear to be a "convert to AAC" option. This can be sidestepped using the free program Audacity by Sourceforge. Load original song in Audacity, crop to the times you want, then use File/Export As and save as M4A/AAC. (Or, alternately, you can set the start-stop times in iTunes, convert to mp3, then load that mp3 in Audacity and Export As, but you can crop much more precisely in Audacity.) Rename as M4R. Follow all other steps as in this video and it will work. :D
