@akirajunto Topspin because the chances of the ball being in are higher. Plus, it is difficult to hit a ball at your sweet spot when a ball is bouncing high and fast. With flat shots, especially fast ones, you can basically put your racket in front of you and use the power from the ball to generate it back. There are times when flat shots are preferred but most of the time you want to hit topspin. Its also about timing but I won't get into that:)
Solid strokes and good footwork, but if you're breeding a champion, at that age she should be much faster and more continuous with her feet, and should be whipping the ball much harder.
well , i don't think a player would has much time for preparation like the girl in this video. Also, we all know that the most important thing in tennis is footwork, so this video shows... not enough to me. She can hit the ball as hard as she want, but the ball may not cross the net or stay inside the baseline as she wants to
I'm not impressed, anyone can do it with a little practice. She impressed me if she hits his forehand while moving. Despite his good technique to hit a ball on the spot means nothing.
I have to use a eastern grip /old school stroke for fast low shots at me . I just started learning the modern stroke/dip drive for high put away shots that come medium paced with tops spin (on the rise at the peak of the raise) Can you hit the modern stroke with the low fast balls (knee high realitivley easy when your good at the modern forehand ? Thanks for your time.
Oh, I enjoyed this. Indeed, the first set of forehands were what we were taught back in the 70s: "starting from bent knee position on balls of your feet, uopn seeing the ball going toward your forehand, turn side ways, take racket back, shift weight forward, and swing . . . let the rack follow-through up!" Tennis now is so amazing, in terms of power generated by (relatively) new ways of hitting (open stance, semi-jumping into the ball, etc), along with the new materials rackets are made of.
i would like to give you some advice about your pupils technique. about the forehand. if you compare her forehand with everyone in top 10 men you could see that before they hit the forehand they hold the racket much more than her because if you dont hold the racket could fall. down and it that way every forehand has a different contact.
Uhh, there wasn't much modern tennis in there, but that girl is really good! All I really saw "modern" wise was the horizontal forehand, the rest were all elevated forehands. That girl will go far in the tennis world if she keeps going though!
Tom, I'm having trouble getting the drive on the ball with SW forehand and end up brushing over the ball and getting very poor contact. What can I do to fix this?
sorry mate i missed this message. 1st - don't hold your grip too far around the handle. 2nd - dont try to imitate a windshield wiper or a rainbow. 3rd just focus on legthening your swing as you role over the ball, just make sure you get the ball spinning forwards everytime. you are probably just trying to do too much. let me know what you think.
@tommyenglish1 well first u never want to quote on quote "roll over the ball" i thought u waz suppose to brush upward against it...unless some people dont know what there talking about??? what you think???
@Sn3aKerFr33kZ Physically, you don't want to roll over the ball because the moment of impact is a very short time frame and if you were rolling over the ball, you'd be hitting it slightly downward... which only works if you're hitting it higher than the net. Of course, if you only imagine yourself rolling over the ball, but actually just swinging up, that's fine. It's normal Newtonian physics...
I think it is fantastic to have your student hit with a continental forehand. It places heavy emphasis on why holding the racquet with a strong palm of the hands is important for learning and improving the eastern or semi-western forehand grip. I like it - it's old school!
she hits across the ball very well but you also need to teach her the windshield wiper motion. you should probably review FYB2007 videos on youtube for "windshield wiper" and other forehand related videos.
Well I expect her to be number 1 in the world but I am not putting all my hopes and dreams in to that. This job working with Emira everyday beats working with a lot of people once a week. My results are good and pleasing. Thats why I do this job.
LOl wtf are you saying the modern forehand DOES NOT NEED A WINDSHIELD wiper forehand ? LAWLZ look at all teh pros . Nadal uses his wrist, federer uses a lot of wrist andy roddick uses a lot of wrist LOL. The windshield wiper forehand = modern forehand
That makes enough sense to me but why would another 'coach' not understand this? I was being taught wrong from this one dude then changed coaches and my game improved so much! He made the 'modern swing' dummy proof for me and it works. Students should be aware of what their coach is telling them to do, just think about it for a second. Do you think you are better than the coaches that disagreed with you? Or you could just have different teaching styles.
I think some coaches have different styles of coaching but there ends up being right and wrong ways of doing things. A lot of coaches dont break it down for their pupils or understand the shots fully and they just talk nonsense. Its like telling a 5 year old to just spin the ball forward and then make the stroke bigger swinging over the shoulder, they will get that pretty quick and they will be hitting topspin, but some coaches just complicate the hell out of it.
tennis to their students? Your student seems to understand 'modern' strokes and have grasped the concept fully. Tennis is a progressive sport and swinging like Rod(the rocket)Laver in 2009 would not make sense to me.Unless the person is like 60 years old...Right?
Hi, thanks for your comment and questions. Yes I am kind of saying that coaches dont know how to coach the modern forehand. I did this video because I had commented on a coaching video saying that he was coaching the 70's technique,he asked if Emira could do this modern forehand when she was 50. I think thats what a lot of coaches think but I wanted to show everyone how simple & controled the modern forehand can be if done and coached right and if she wanted she could do the 70's one anyway.
I was also interested to see if she could control the ball with this grip and style, and if she had a full understand of all the spins etc. most kids just hit it straight into the back fence.
so, which one is better in a match? flat or topspin?

I believe it's showing that old school played off the front foot, while modern loads on the back foot.
