@TraceurHarryG1 He fell back while sitting on his bed, &the weight of his head caused it to turn sharply as he fell on the pillows, causing the spinal cord to be crushed &the blood supply to his brain being cut off - he had a stroke. His death was instant &he did not suffer. He was very ill &weak at this point. His body was as an old man, his heart weak, his limbs& head increasingly heavy. And the growth in his jaw began to grow again( it had been mostly surgically cut away when he was a young man).
@MrsJosephMerrick thtas sad :( aparrentley the hospital he lived in still have his skeleton but is not allowed to be shown to the public, they should just burie what remains of the poor man
@TraceurHarryG1 Yes, that is correct about his skeleton( I prefer to say ''remains''). But his family say they are glad it this there, as a memorial. Also, myself and others think, that at least his remains are safe at the hospital. I would be afraid that if his remains were buried, his grave might be defaced, and that would be very upsetting.
@MrsJosephMerrick fair enough, but if they did bury him then the could do what they did with michael jackson, put scemment over his coffin to stop people getting in and stealing his body, also i watched the movie now, his death as u said it was is right and it was either a suicide attempt or an attemp to sleep like a normal person, but sadley no one will ever know, the truth that died with joseph merrick
@TraceurHarryG1 If you read my last comment again, you'll understand that I agree with you. Sadly, Joseph's remains are better off where they are, kept safe.....And youre right, we cant be 100% certain the circumstances of his death, but I believe it really was just a tragic accident. And, I have to add, that sadly, by that time, Joseph really was very ill and weak, so perhaps in a way it was for the best.
@MrsJosephMerrick dont worry i understood the last comment and your rught is well its better that he did die then cause he was dying and in a way what ever happened was good in a way cause it ended his suffering so i agree with u there
@MrsJosephMerrick i will admit it is a sad thing to agree about is well :( watchin the movie of what might have happened was really sad at the end especially with the adagio for strings music in the background :(
@TraceurHarryG1 The music certainly doesnt help. But Iv'e watched the end with the music mute and I still cry my eyes out. Despite the inaccuracies in the film, it's still very moving, of course the last scene devastatingly so...It's when ''Joseph'' removes the pillows from the bed...that ALWAYS gets to me.
@MrsJosephMerrick i know right and im a guy, when i watched the ending i nearley felt a tear fall from my eye, i watched one of the trailer and that nearley made me cry even more from the way it was made
@TraceurHarryG1 I think it makes it worse because Joseph really lived, he's not just a tragic yet insprational character in a film. We can imagine that it might have been like that...Whatever happened, he was all alone at the end, and he couldnt even cry out for help.
@MrsJosephMerrick it is very sad and shocking especially that he was only 27 when he died and he was dying which made it very hard for evreyone who knew him :(
@TraceurHarryG1 Yes, I'm sure it was very upsetting. After all, he lived at the hospital 5 years. But I'm sure everyone could see at the end how much Joseph was suffering, while his indomitable spirit kept him going. There is a ''famous'' photo of him 2 years before he died, &he looks really terrible in it.Perhaps, while its hard to think it, it almost came as a relief that he would suffer no more.He must have been in pain all the time, even before then: his hip, his feet...yet he never complained.
@MrsJosephMerrick i know right even thou his left arm was all that was not diformed he never cared as long as he was happy, and is the photo a picture of john wearing that brown suit that he wore in real life and in the movie?
@TraceurHarryG1 I wouldnt say, sadly, he was happy ''every hour of the day''(film quote). He made the most of what he had, and he certainly had some really wonderful moments:the panto, his holidays, his meeting with Princess Alex... There were times when he was alone, and I suspect he was left a lone alot, when he got very depressed - but I think it's only natural really, considering this ''burden'' he had to bear...Yes, the sepia photo shows him wearing his ''Sunday Best '' suit - and...
@TraceurHarryG1 ...the film version was definately based on that....But, unfortunately, thats not strictly true about his left arm. It was because of his condition that it was actually smaller than an average mans, delicate, the hand the size of a young woman's. Joseph was very proud of his left hand and arm, and whenever he had other doctor's visiting would ''show it off''. The only parts of Joseph that werent deformed at all, were small areas of his legs, chest and face, and his intimate parts.
@TraceurHarryG1 Those examinations infront of Treves ''eminent colleagues'' were like that scene in the film& Joseph hated them. He said he was ''stripped naked''& felt like he was in a ''cattle market'' . In the end, he refused to go, and Tom Norman stuck up for him, which annoyed Treves...I hope that if such medical exams/ talks happened after Joseph was admitted permanently to the Hospital( and Treves got to know him) he was given the respect he deserved.
this film and its musical themes captures the true nature of the human spirit..joseph merrick a.k.a the elephant man was the kindest of human beings against all odds he found it in his heart to love when those around him dared not even look at him..his soul was pure and good ..his humanity was his salvation...his life was an inspiration to us all...remember how sad and how cruel life can be..never let it dampen your spirit never let it blacken your heart..
8.25 is my favourite out of the whole score(Recapitulation). So very beautiful.I wish there was more of it..And why did you not include the wonderful pantomime music?Otherwise, very well put together.
0 dislikes for a reason. :)
