@cyclysm748 No, I have the dvd... and the keys have stereo sounding and the other instruments don't. So I cutted the center material to keys sound louder in this way. Just a better way to hear Jordan's work.
it's true wht they say. have u realized that evn now he still uses those music sheets but on the digital screen? have u seen th Octavarium Orquestra concrt? where he plays the Octavarium solo & uses his little synth? and if u see all those little papers r th notes 4 th solo. HIS solo, and yet he still reads it. it's just a mattr of custom or confort. maybe because it was his 1st concert he wanted to play it just like th record and respect Kevin's job, he was just a Guess in that moment.
There's actually something pretty interesting about this show. JR only had one week to prepare for it, yet he managed to transcribe and learn all of the parts, and then play them with great accuracy. Sure, he might be using some sheet music there, but I'm not sure KM or DS could do all of that and then perform so well.

Bullshit! Rudess has been with the band for over a decade and the retard even has to use cue cards to recall his own keyboard parts! You never saw Kevin Moore using cue cards! Someone with perfect pitch doesn't have to use cue cards to recall music unless the are fraud! Rudess writes such shit that it really ain't worth remembering...
@Zakariah1971 I´m sorry, but as a musician and a fan I was just outraged here. This is pure "trollishness" or pure ignorance. What does "perfect pitch" has to do with memorizing millions of notes on a musical instrument? "Perfect pitch" isn´t some divine ability that gives the musician magical powers, infinite memory capabilities and the cure for cancer. It´s just an inner reference for note pitchs that some people have innate or acquire with enough practice

Jordan rudess started studying piano at age nine at Juilliard right??? Jordan Rudess has perfect pitch right? So if rudess is a piano prodigy, why does he need cue cards to play Kevin Moore parts?????
@Zakariah1971 Guys... What the fuck has perfect pitch to do with the use of score sheets for mnemonic reference? Do you know anything about music, really? ¬¬
@Zakariah1971 Because that was the JR first show and the DT songs arent easy to learn at the first time I'm telling you this because I play DT songs I'm a keyboardist
I never knew Myung used to headbang around like that O_o Awesome!
Man, LaBrie had so much power...I think he's just getting older is all now, cause it just doesn't seem like he has as powerful of a voice. Mind you, it's still very powerful :P
Very excellent performance! And not bad quality for 1994 either :P
Yes he did. He was also invited to join the band but in that time, he refused because he was with Dixie Dregs. I always wonder how could be the 4th Dream Theater album with Jordan.
You guys dominated the entire comments page with this pointless argument! You both "lose" as far as i'm concerned, the only one who "wins" is James LaBrie and his awesome voice! xxxx
He blew out his voice when vacationing in Cuba just before they commenced on the Awake tour...C'mon man, I didn't even have to read up on that...It's basic knowledge for any DT geek.
Let me give you guys an idea of how insane Jordan Rudess is:
At about 4:15 you can see he has the charts in front of him. That means he was pretty much sight reading Dream Theater songs and playing them at a live show flawlessly. I can't think of a more difficult thing to do in music.
@Alienxfb14 actually, he uses the charts to pretty much everything, just in case his godlike brain stops working so flawlessly for a fraction of a second. If you really want something to demonstrate how he has been so amazing for so long, use the fact that he went to Juliard for special studies when he was 9... Lets face it, the man is just too scary to be among us
I can't believe some of you are saying James did bad because of ONE voice crack. Try singing this song sometime. The notes are hard enough, but to do it with that kind of grit for that long is hard to maintain your support. I start cracking before the first chorus, even though up to that point I can hit it pretty well, then again, I'm a trained singer :)
What are you XDing about? Grit doesn't make it easier. Unless you mean easier to lose your voice. Do you sing? Because I do, and grit is not a crutch, its hard to get the technique down to use grit properly, especially in the head register. So where the hell did you get that misguided idea from?
It's not a misguided idea. I've learned how to properly do screaming vocals without wearing my vocals out in the least. Just take the scream down a bit to add grit into your voice and I can go on like that forever. Also yeah I sing, my range is limited cause I have not gotten a vocal coach as of yet and have bad qualities within my singing but I do have a good singing voice withing my range and grit is natural and makes it much easier for me to hit higher notes.
Much easier for YOU because you started as a screamer. Screaming properly and singing with grit are different mechanisms. You probably use scream grit, which is different from the grit James Labrie uses.
Case in point: If grit makes it easier to sing high notes, why hasn't James been able to use grit on his high notes since 2002?
I don't know much about screaming, but thats because I listen to REAL music, not that deathcore vox bullshit. And a know a LOT about singing, with and without grit.
Real music? It's all music so screw off, I'm not saying what you listen to isn't real music. Also, scream grit is the proper grit to use on your voice seeing as it doesn't hurt you. If James is using a different grit that's screwing him over than maybe he should learn how to do it properly. Think of how often people hit high notes with grit, almost all the time. For good reason.
James is using proper grit here too, just a different type. Death metal grit is different from blues grit which is different from 80's metal grit, you should know this.
Singing in general is a relaxed act, NONE of it should be any easier or harder than anything else. Gritty, clean, high, or low is all supposed to be free and relaxed, thus gritty highs are no easier than clean highs. They are for you because you're a screamer. Its your specialty, so its to be expected that you'd do it easier.
I'm not even talking death metal so drop it... also, I find that I can get all those tones from my voice if I just play around with how much of it I actually use. Also, yeah singing is a relaxed act but shitty habits can cause you to strain for higher notes. If you have that and you put grit into it you're more likely for your voice not to crack and you're not gonna strain as much for that note. A lot of people are like that. And "proper" grit doesn't make you lose your voice. End of discussion.
The end of discussion happens when I say it happens you avenged sevenfold loving little bitch!
And don't argue with me about the voice because you have NO idea how much I know. I've read hundreds of articles, watched countless videos and have plenty of books on vocal technique, I've talked to the world's top vocal coaches as if they were my neighbors, so don't act like you know a single DETAIL more than I do. Prick!
Now you're mad cause I proved my point by being right. Trying to bring up things to make me either jealous or make me look inferior. Don't insult me, you don't even know me. I'm amazed how immature you are for someone who is so apparently knowledgeable. Also you say I don't listen to real music... I'm here on a Dream Theater video cause they're my favourite band. Sorry bud, you've been served, get over it.
Im not mad because i've been "served" m made cause I deal with people like you all day that don't know the half of what they're talking about and try to tell me i'm wrong.
Straining is straining grit or not grit and you can crack when improperly using grit It just so happens that James does not have perfect vocal technique which is why he can still have bad nights when he sings before the cord rupture. If it were easier to sing high gritty, then thats the only way he'd sing high. Explain that.
You explained it yourself, he doesn't do the grit properly and he's screwing up his voice doing it. Try reading what I said earlier, your questions have already been answered.
But you said if you strain then its easier to hit notes if you use grit. If that was indeed the case, he would only be able to hit high notes these days with grit, as his technique is STILL not perfect. He has never had perfect technique, and still doesn't these days.
And for the record, I wouldn't be so hostile if you didn't respond with "XD" at the end of your first comment. That implies you were laughing because I said something stupid, when in fact I said nothing wrong.
So you said at first grit, not proper grit, but grit helps. He doesn't use proper grit, which you say helps, therefore the grit he's using does NOT make it easier for him to hit the higher notes, it just destroys his voice. You further go to say that proper grit helps you hit notes easier, even though if you sing properly all notes would be easy regardless of if it was gritty or clean, because there wouldnt be any strain in your throat anyway.
So no im afraid I still dont see where I was wrong
Eh they were just having a bad night. Plus they had a new guy in the band for a little while and it was an awkward time. They still did wonderfully! They will always be the best!
I think this is the "proof" that James can sing bad live, and still be concidered one of the best singers. Many thinks he sounded always awesome, before vocalinjury, but actually he was not so far away from today. The vocalinjury didn´t really had a big effect on hes voice. He lost some range, and got more sensitive to getting tired live.
And if this is the time he got concedered to be one of the best singers in rock, that means he is not so bad today either!!
Wow, they've really come a long way in 14 years. This is just horrible compared to how they sound live today. Petrucci (of all people) was actually behind the beat in a few spots.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this sucks huh, i wish he sang this heavy still, but this last tour hes been much better than he was after his vocal rupture, which i dont know if that was before or after this...but it was right around this time...
Unfortunately, by the time James LaBrie healed, he was already aging, which changes one's voice. Age flatters some people's voices (Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie Dio), but it didn't do anything good for James.
Was that Mike Portnoy delivering an ear-splitting falsetto around 2:50?

I'm not even talking death metal so drop it... also, I find that I can get all those tones from my voice if I just play around with how much of it I actually use. Also, yeah singing is a relaxed act but shitty habits can cause you to strain for higher notes. If you have that and you put grit into it you're more likely for your voice not to crack and you're not gonna strain as much for that note. A lot of people are like that. And "proper" grit doesn't make you lose your voice. End of discussion.
BloodReverence 3 years ago
The end of discussion happens when I say it happens you avenged sevenfold loving little bitch!
And don't argue with me about the voice because you have NO idea how much I know. I've read hundreds of articles, watched countless videos and have plenty of books on vocal technique, I've talked to the world's top vocal coaches as if they were my neighbors, so don't act like you know a single DETAIL more than I do. Prick!
ozzymeetsjesus 3 years ago
Now you're mad cause I proved my point by being right. Trying to bring up things to make me either jealous or make me look inferior. Don't insult me, you don't even know me. I'm amazed how immature you are for someone who is so apparently knowledgeable. Also you say I don't listen to real music... I'm here on a Dream Theater video cause they're my favourite band. Sorry bud, you've been served, get over it.
BloodReverence 3 years ago
Im not mad because i've been "served" m made cause I deal with people like you all day that don't know the half of what they're talking about and try to tell me i'm wrong.
Straining is straining grit or not grit and you can crack when improperly using grit It just so happens that James does not have perfect vocal technique which is why he can still have bad nights when he sings before the cord rupture. If it were easier to sing high gritty, then thats the only way he'd sing high. Explain that.
ozzymeetsjesus 3 years ago
You explained it yourself, he doesn't do the grit properly and he's screwing up his voice doing it. Try reading what I said earlier, your questions have already been answered.
BloodReverence 3 years ago
But you said if you strain then its easier to hit notes if you use grit. If that was indeed the case, he would only be able to hit high notes these days with grit, as his technique is STILL not perfect. He has never had perfect technique, and still doesn't these days.
And for the record, I wouldn't be so hostile if you didn't respond with "XD" at the end of your first comment. That implies you were laughing because I said something stupid, when in fact I said nothing wrong.
ozzymeetsjesus 3 years ago
I said proper grit does... if he's using the wrong kind of grit that's hurting his voice then he's not gonna help himself.
Summary of what I said:
If you use proper grit it doesn't hurt.
Proper grit gets rid of some strain in your throat.
Now you've told me that he doesn't use proper grit. So both of those facts would be void for him.
Got it?
BloodReverence 3 years ago
So you said at first grit, not proper grit, but grit helps. He doesn't use proper grit, which you say helps, therefore the grit he's using does NOT make it easier for him to hit the higher notes, it just destroys his voice. You further go to say that proper grit helps you hit notes easier, even though if you sing properly all notes would be easy regardless of if it was gritty or clean, because there wouldnt be any strain in your throat anyway.
So no im afraid I still dont see where I was wrong

I'm done with this, you're not getting any less blind the more I talk. Don't expect me to reply if you do. I'm done with talking to people like you.
BloodReverence 3 years ago
I don't expect you to reply. You've been beaten by your own logic and proved nothing. Merry Christmas :)

Eh they were just having a bad night. Plus they had a new guy in the band for a little while and it was an awkward time. They still did wonderfully! They will always be the best!
BillyJimmyBobbyTimmy 3 years ago
I think this is the "proof" that James can sing bad live, and still be concidered one of the best singers. Many thinks he sounded always awesome, before vocalinjury, but actually he was not so far away from today. The vocalinjury didn´t really had a big effect on hes voice. He lost some range, and got more sensitive to getting tired live.
And if this is the time he got concedered to be one of the best singers in rock, that means he is not so bad today either!!

wow, Labrie is so wonderful on this song!! i think he is so good in this album. why his voice conk out after this album?
seokseok05 3 years ago
He ruptured some of his vocal chords after falling ill to food poisoning. His voice has healed now, though.
r7m 3 years ago
Wow, they've really come a long way in 14 years. This is just horrible compared to how they sound live today. Petrucci (of all people) was actually behind the beat in a few spots.
LaBrie missed badly at 2:20. Ouch!
slipninja 3 years ago
There's even less distortion on the guitar live than on the album!

this sucks huh, i wish he sang this heavy still, but this last tour hes been much better than he was after his vocal rupture, which i dont know if that was before or after this...but it was right around this time...
Dunford00 4 years ago
Unfortunately, by the time James LaBrie healed, he was already aging, which changes one's voice. Age flatters some people's voices (Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie Dio), but it didn't do anything good for James.
Was that Mike Portnoy delivering an ear-splitting falsetto around 2:50?
tankermottind 3 years ago
JP does the backups on this song so I would assume it was him. Hardly ear-splitting though.
dimedizzle 3 years ago
Perhaps, but all the backing vocals I've heard from John Petrucci are very limited in range, while I've heard Mike Portnoy use falsetto before.
