Lao people call it Bai Etou and Thai call it Bai Manglak . The English would be Lemon Basil. It is a shrub about the side of a pepper plant.

I think was meant as a joke in kidding sort of way in the song since you can't really hang yourself from a shrub. And yes it does rhythm with her following verse. BTW...good translation.

ahh...lemon basil! thanx sinlap! i kno wat it is cuz i eat everything! but didnt kno what its called lol i'll have to remember that one. we have so many herbs and i speak thai laos and cambodian. my husband is laos so now i mainly speak laos and its been 6 yrs so im kinda forgetting the other languages...sad. so thats the basil that they make the drink from too! ???with the seeds...

I think the seed came from sweet basil (horapa-Thai or bua rapa-Lao). The leaves have a purplish color on them and so does the stemps. The type that you eat with bowl of pho.

The lemon basil (or hoary basil) is not purplish but if I remember correctly, it does have a little fuss on the leaves. Use in various Lao dishes. I like to use it when I cook various Lao soup. I am not familiar with Cambodian cooking. :(

Well to be more specific, it's "lotus" tint not purple. Bua rapa because the color is "bua" (lotus color or "rose" color).
