  • Maynard has roy orbison vibrato when he does layne covers.

  • His voice sounds perfect... coulda fooled me if I did not know Maynard sang this.

  • @heyjamesky are u ppl serious? i mean of course i like maynard but hes voice doesnt sound NOTHING like laynes how could u even think that was layne singing no offense to maynard but hes and laynes voices are completely different

  • Comment removed

  • That ending is fucking orgasmic. Maynard and Layne- my two all-time favourite vocalists.

  • This sounds WAY better than with the new vocalist...

Don't get me wrong, their last album sounds great but songs from early albums just don't sound right with William DuVall, IMHO.

  • If Maynard had the growlish sound, he would be great for AIC, alas, he doesn't.

  • @n93Barker Layne and Maynard have completely different voices and style. However, ill have to agree with you. I'm terms of abilities they are equal.

  • is there any video footage of this performance floating around? i've only found audio. would love to SEE it.

  • is it just me or does this song seem a bit rushed? still goodly tho :) no one can replace Layne however.

  • @seannalice its true nobody can replace Layne in AIC. but in terms of vocal abilities, Maynard and Layne are equals! superb performance and a good tribute

  • @seannalice It's in a faster tempo

  • @s5b678 that would he awesome

  • God damn, for a second I thought Layne had risen from the dead, but it was alas it was just Maynard doing the song exceptionally well. AIC please grab Maynard as your lead, Layne is gone but Maynard can fill his shoes i think.

  • @s5b678 Good joke. Maynard is my second favorite. But to say that he could fill Layne Staley's shoes is..... quite a leap.

  • Talentless Monkey fuck, "replacing" Layne Staley, AIC died with Layne

  • Unbelievable.

  • Maynard was phenomenal in this song. Thats all I gotta say. I mean, I would have LOVED to see Maynard replace Layne due to his death. But, with Tool, APC, and Puscifer, plus his Wine, I don't think Maynard could have added another heavy duty band like AIC to the list.

But, who knows. He is Maynard after all.

  • AIC should do an album with all the singers they have performed with.

  • @COLUMBINE181 no one could equal layne but that would be pretty amazing

  • If only AiC took Maynard in as their lead singer, I'd die.. Two of my favorite bands in one.

  • @clamb147 Moar liek cry, mirite?

  • jesus christ...

  • As much as I love Layne Staley, I couldn't think of a better replacement than Maynard.

  • @manduh87 No... just, no.

I can. Mike Patton is an awesome vocal talent, much better than Maynard.

  • DUDE, fuck this is amazing!

  • What happened to the 90s? Lady Gaga and Katy Perry? Are you serious?!?!?!???! AIC STP and of course Tool were the best its like eversince Kurt Cobain died music went down hill except for these bands.

  • @aerosmithfan2014: Don't forget Pearl Jam :D

  • pure awesome

  • @smartacus88 ..... wtf???

I s'pose I can be as prejudice as the next guy, but when it comes to music... all bets are off.

  • @smartacus88 Dumb fuck!!! lol!

  • We all have a layne in us. no matter who you are, we all have one in us.

  • Maynard uses alot of vibrato in his dick, he can only hit the high notes of the migilato of the homonato if he puts the emphasis on his brown eye, with a hint of criminato on his nut sack. All in all, a good try, but he needs to work on hitting the vaginato if he's going to satisfy the butthole.

  • @jlightning68 I like your style.

  • @jlightning68 LOLOLOLOL

  • they should do more songs!!! plz!!!!!

  • Stop....fucking...comparing people. Goddammit. They are all good. Let's leave it at that.

  • Maynard In The Box!!!

  • Maynard can't really sing AiC songs, but I guess he gets an A for effort.

  • @pwn3dname no one can replace layne for aic, but maynard is perfect for that spot

  • @fward101 Maynard has a different vocal range, and thus he sounds far too light and unemotive. Not because he isn't trying, but because the song doesn't fit him.

  • there's just something about the way Maynard sings "Jesus Christ".....

  • I was in the front of the stage for this show and it was AIC's first time playing on stage together since Layne's death, and man was it an amazing show. Great one's gone too soon.

  • if i was the new songer of alice in chains i don't sing song written by laine.for respect him.All the layne's songs have his sofference..Layne r.i .p.and damn now mike starr also!!!!!!!

  • This sounds really freaking good screw Duvall now it only seems that Cantrell sings everything

  • American bands that will soon be in the rock and roll hall of fame : Alice In Chains, Tool, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against The Machine, Nine Inch Nails.i fucking miss the 90s. 2000s bands are complete shit with absolutely no talent. only Queens Of The Stone Age and The White Stripes are any good.

  • @r4scuache well said

  • @r4scuache cars were better in the 90s too

  • if only maynard and not that william guy were the new lead singer

  • Maynard James Kennan, AIC's new lead singer... Only in my wet dream

  • @aic029 thats one of the funniest comments i read in a while lol. would be bad ass if he sang with them tho.

  • maynard, layne and bill hicks are the fucking shit of the shit and no one comes close

  • @JoiSigo agreed

  • @JoiSigo You sir, have nailed it.

  • Don't get me wrong, I'm a big STP fan, but Scott Weiland WISHES he could sing half as good as Layne or Maynard.

  • @brokenseatbelt you know this isn't STP right?

  • @OpenDreamsYT what would give you the idea that I think this is STP? I said Scott Weiland WISHES he could sing that good. Learn to read....and to swim.

  • @brokenseatbelt ok man, my bad, i was driving by one great big festering neon distraction

  • @brokenseatbelt i like tool better that stp but be real with your self brother weiland sings way better than maynard. if they were randoms and just got judged on there voice quality not there coolness or lyrics maynard would be barely above average just vocals alone. guys like vedder layne and weiland are true singers

  • @myPAINisSELFchosen85 Apples and oranges. :)

  • @myPAINisSELFchosen85 Wait, why is Maynard not a true singer? lol Vedder has good range but I can hit all his notes. It's hard but I can do it. Weiland's vocals I can hit the easiest. His range isn't outrageous. Maynard's vocal range I can't even come close to hitting his high stuff and we are both in the tenor range.

  • @brokenseatbelt scott is not doing good now ... but im sure he could show us some magic if sang OLD AIC songs back in his core days .... I wish he joined AIC :{

  • @brokenseatbelt scott is a better singer than maynard no offense. i think the order would be 1. Layne, 2. Chris Cornell, 3. Scott, 4. Maynard, 5. Cobain? whatever order you make cobain has to be last because he wasnt that good singing wise, but songwritng wise he was in the top tho.

  • @jjc19461 Cobain, really? really. there is no emoticon to emphesis that _really_ quite enough. the guy couldnt record an album w/o 1000 packs of halls and if you really break his music into sheet there is NOTHING special about it. He was time and place with just the right amount of heroin. dont kid yourself.

  • @an0id ARE YOU A FUCKING RETARD? I NEVER SAID COBIAN WAS BETTER THANH MAYNARD AND LAYNE! I SAID COBAIN WOULD BE IN LAST PLACE. READ YOU FUCKING KID!

  • @an0id i want to fight you it wasnt no time and place how dare you some up nirvana to just a time and a place, kurt doesnt get enough recognition for being a vocalist, but he put his heart into it, listen to where did you sleep last night, he didnt write that song but the emotion, the viciousness, vocally layne, chris, scott, and maynard i guess maybe better but kurts scream was the best of them all no doubt in my mind, to kurt it was about melody, was mozart on sheet exstensive hell no

  • @jjc19461 kurt doesnt get enough recognition for being a vocalist, but he put his heart into it, listen to where did you sleep last night, he didnt write that song but the emotion, the viciousness, vocally layne, chris, scott, and maynard i guess maybe better but kurts scream was the best of them all no doubt in my mind,

  • @brokenseatbelt thats fuckin right! haha, im ok with STP but i dont no, scott weiland is kinda of a chode...

  • @brokenseatbelt No doubt Layne and Maynard have incredible voices, but you need to hear Scott sing Interstate Love Song acoustically. It's beautiful.

  • Maynard sounds KILLER !!!

  • It's Maynard and Layne so shut the fuck up it you don't like it.

  • @fastd16civic um no, this is 2005 layne was dead

  • @fastd16civic um no, this is 2005 layne was dead

  • you can tell maynard has a little trouble with the plain vocals on aic songs. he has gotten really used to moving all over the place, and he seems to use a lot of unnecessary vibrato in his voice to compensate. like he can't hold a note without moving it at least a little bit.

  • @uhohitstim plain vocals? since when were layne's vocals ever plain? plus he used vibrato like no one else so the vibrato IS necessary.

  • @uhohitstim The mark of Maynard's vocals is a complete lack of vibrato. He sometimes intentionally moves from note to note quickly, but when he holds notes there's NO vibrato.

  • @sugarpillguy Yes he does. He has an incredibly beautiful and unique vibrato. I dont know what the shit you are talking about.

  • Man thanks for posting benefit show- it is priceless stuff . Saw Chains in 2009 and Jerry before, but never with Layne. They remain one of the defining bands of my life though the 90s are a long time gone. With Pat Lachman, that is a one of a kind performance.

  • @Runescapesanta Just...be quiet.

  • @Runescapesanta You don't have the right to say that when Maynard is singing anything.

  • @Runescapesanta it's a tribute chill the FUCK out. plus it was jerry's anyways...

  • @Runescapesanta maynard was one of layne's best friends so its a tribute to him, tard

  • @Runescapesanta They were good friends you fucking tool. If you knew anything about Layne you would fucking know that..

  • youtube comments ftl

  • It's all subjective, everyone is entitled to their opinion but most of you seem to open yourselves up up to trolling on here.. and so the cycle continues.. something to do I guess :D

  • Tool and AIC are both some of the greatest modern bands.

  • @MountAnalogue AGREED!

  • It saddens me deeply that no one else can nail this song like Layne can... And they shoulda went with Sully Erna for this concert! Who better to cover an Alice in chains song then a band accused of Ripping off Alice in chains singing. Sully is 5 times the singer this guy is

  • @XMDinx if you think Sully is a better singer then Maynard then you truly are a fucking idiot who knows nothing about music.

  • @RadioFriendlyNoise Better singer no, but he can pull this song off better. this song isn't a spectacle of vocal styling, its a naisely monotone song. and that singing suits it best. Sully is the only one i've heard pull it off. He's the only one that sounds like Layne. and sully is better, he can sing many styles, and many pitches, he can sing gruffy Rob zombie style vocals Grunge like layne style vocals, his own, and soft. never underestimate him

  • Man! that harmony is sick in "...can you sew them shut" and the following answer/calls.

  • You guys realize that they sing in harmony, right? Jerry is is trying to hit certain notes, and Layne/Maynard/William/ Mary Queen of Scots is trying to hit certain notes. You know, harmony?

Just the very idea that Maynard James Kennan sings AiC songs makes me giddy as a school girl.

  • You people arguing about Jerry vs Layne... Being a good vocalist is one thing. Hitting the notes etc is important on some level sure, and this is where backup vocals are easier than leads.

But being a good "lead" vocalist in rock/metal is more about the characteristics and unique qualities of a singer's voice. Jerry can sing - Absolutely. But his voice lacks a certain depth of character on it's own. When paired with Layne, it was a perfect balance. IMO.

  • dude no way is jerry a better vocalsit, ya jerry may have been the brains behinde the music, but layne was the talent and the voice of AIC.

  • @venom6echo o.O

  • listening to the crowd sing along with layne gone is tearjerking.. awesome as fuck though.

oh and let me throw in there that idgaf if staley didn't write any of the songs on Facelift or not, they're all about things that were very personal and close to him. this song in particular is about fighting demons, devil himself, whatever. that and the gigantic metaphor of battling heroin addiction and questioning God. at least someone from the same era of music helped them out with this one?

  • everyone is always so ready to bitch and moan about who is better and who sucks and who shoulnd't do this or should do that....NONE OF YOU PEOPLE KNOW WHAT MUSIC IS ABOUT...this....this it what music is about....everyone knows noone will ever be layne...but guess what layne is dead....as bad as that sucks he did it to his self....he was one of my heros....but i would rather have people continue performing the music he and JC gave us than to have them just stop..thats not what its about...MAYNARD

  • wow...how good does maynard sound in this?

  • u know what i love about maynard. his voice always has that like vibrato to it. it's so awesome

  • I wish they had a studio version of this. Anything with Maynard singing it would have me going out and paying for the music.

  • Maynard rules. Cantrell is THE heart and soul of AIC.

  • @Ryanrm I completely agree with you.

  • @Ryanrm except the best singer ever is dead ... cantrell isn't all that was aic. douche.

  • Maynard should drop everything he's doing and just become AIC's new vocalist

  • MAYNARD IS THE SHIT!!!!!!

  • If you ever saw Alice In Chains way back in the day, you would be suprised at just how many songs Cantrell sang, and Layne stood in the background beating on his tambourine.

  • xBx xB= )x

  • ROCK MUSIC+CHUCK NORRIS=MAYNARD.

  • I think that the debate about if Jerry is better vocalist than Layne or not is insane, Layne is specific Jerry too, and their both created great songs, great voices to combine, Jerry is great vocalist, Layne was fantastic singer ;)

  • Jerrys abetter vocalist than LAYNE....I can say thats the first time I ever heard that......sorry MrSpider but your going to loose that argument always.......have you even heard layne sing...listen to man in the box, junkhead, or rain when I die LIVE and come back and comment

  • I think that if MJK would have been the next vocalist for the chains the new cd would have been twice as kick ass. as he is a bit rusty in this song but can keep with jerry like the new singer and layne had,

  • Layne was way better than that nig will ever be. He made the band they arent the same without his nodding

  • @aWorldOfBones lol Maynard has had plenty of success.... like 2 grammys

  • Jesus I'm wasted and can't spell for shit but feel my words true addicts of music it's not who is better than who it's about what's real who cares enough to write something for us the fan or for a fucking pay check...

  • I think what we are fogetting here and it's the music Layne was one of the most talented vocalist of our time jerry and him harmonized so well but less we forget a living legend Maynard James Kennan is singing this and paying great tribut to his friend Layne and tributing to this cause...I don't think anyone cld have covered laynes spot better than maynard

  • Win.

  • The mad season - above album was such a mellow break from what we were used to from those involved at the time.. Barrett's time in Screaming Trees was so turbulent, Mike McCready was recovering from his personal shit and Layne proved how good his voice really was when he sung bluesy harmonies rather than metal based guitar driven songs

  • yeah, layne was good with vocals but he didn't write too many of their best songs, jerry wrote the best ones. haha

    in my opinion of course.

  • @danzig5 fact

  • @tuterc12 Get your racist ass outta my video

  • Comment removed

  • @tuterc12 fuck you, you absolute fucking prick! your mums a dirty fat brother-fucking slut, your dads a greasy sister-fucking paedophile, and you're the fucking product!

  • @tuterc12 fuck off you redneck fuck. you are proof that in some cases abortion should be mandatory in incest

  • Comment removed

  • Go Maynard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If Maynard became the new singer and they recorded an album, the sheer amazingness of it would end the universe.

  • thank you for posting this. this is definitly a beautiful tribute to layne. maynard did justice to the song that i don't think anyone else could have done. the audience singing back suprisingly doesn't bother me. obv man in the box is like THE alice in chains song (the one everyone knows, the song that braught them to the forefront). it just makes me tear up, how many people really loved layne.

  • i love how retards on here try to spit their opinion on every little thing in everyones faces. geta lifee and listen to the music..shit heads...

  • @1high2decaymynervez Hell yeah man.. I think that this is the best vocal cover of an AiC song Ive ever heard, i dont like the new guy but thats just me.. I believe the spot should have gone to Maynard, Phil Anselmo, or Scott Weiland personally

  • If somone told me this was an old recording from the 90's I would believe it!!!! Maynard sounds amazing and so much like Layne here!!! But it is Maynard we are talkin about here. He is musical god!!

  • is there anything maynard can't do? trick question, and yes he is a god!

  • @MrSpiderwired What? Jerry a better vocalist? I sure hope you meant to say lyricist...

  • @semifixtion sorry bub, i'm gonna have to say that Jerry is the better vocalist.. i think layne definitely had more creativity lyrically though.. idk, maybe i'm just more into the heroin-swept grunge era than this new age of shit-pop and overused riffs

  • I think you have it mixed up. Layne was an extremely talented singer while Jerry was/is a talent writer(music/lyrics).

  • i've seen jerry live.......if he was so great what happened to his solo career? comparing his voice to layne is blasphemy...not even in the same universe...sorry but no one could convey such beautiful sorrow...it was real

  • Comment removed

  • I here it now..."Burn the Heretic!" Agreed, "beautiful sorrow" is a good way to put it. Don't get me wrong, Layne was amazing and will be missed. I'm not trying to stir the pot so much as get people to stop this 'Layne Worship' (sorry, you missed Jesus about 2,000 years ago). For all around abilities though, Jerry's better hands down (that's why AIC will continue to kick ass!). Just enjoy the new stuff for what it is and stop living in the past.

  • @MrSpiderwired @MrSpiderwired it's not worship its art appreciation he put his heart into his voice....and while i do agree the new AIC is good stuff...they should try to come up with their own sound cuz that's what bugs me most....the original came from a deep dark place. and its like i said if jerry was the "glue and brains" why didn't he just go off on his own..yeah he did....and it sucked...that says it all. ps: i didn't miss jesus....jesus built my hotrod ;)

  • Just because Jerry's solo stuff was sub-par (mediocre at best) doesn't make him any less talented. Other than River of Deceit, Mad Season wasn't all that great either. It's called chemistry, the fact that AIC could even continue is because they still had chemistry w/o Layne. Why? Jerry is responsible for the sound, hence my logical conclusion that Jerry is the glue and brains. I don't think AIC 2.0 needs to change a thing, they already have an original sound, why change the formula?

  • mad season had many unique and great songs on there cd. it doesnt seem like you have listened to that cd too much.

  • @MrSpiderwired AIC no comparison. Layne was a more skilled vocalist than is Jerry. Of course they live on, but I certainly hope you aren't comparing "Your decision" to "Man in the Box"...that would be retarded.

  • @MrSpiderwired ummmm have u heard his solo stuff???

  • I know you're joking.

  • @MrSpiderwired you may think so, but the majority know layne owned dudes ass in vocals

  • @MrSpiderwired

    bahahahahahahahahahahaha

    throughs it down!!!!

    You are a fucking imbecile

  • @MrSpiderwired yeah i agree with the other dude. jerry writes better shit but layne was a amazing singer. not saying jerry is bad but better than layne? no my friend. and yes black was a good album. the new guy is a excellent singer. he's no layne but he is still good in his own rights. my fav tune off that album is private hell.

  • @MrSpiderwired Jerry a better vocalist? WHAT!? Dude you're retarded. I think you are the only person in the world to ever say that.

  • @MrSpiderwired you are on crack....... obviously u have never heard mad season.... and layne did write alot of good songs just not the singles they put out in my opinion alice in chains died with him...... at least when cobain died they let nirvana go....i know they are still trying to keep it alive but it is just not the same ...RiP to Layne and Kurt

  • @MrSpiderwired HAHAHAHAHA im agree that black gives way to blue is a kick ass album buy layne staley is the man

  • @MrSpiderwired jerry a better vocalist than layne?damn man....what can i say thats your opinion

  • @MrSpiderwired You my friend are an idiot and an asshole. Layne Satley revolutionized a new vocal styling that people for decades now have been trying to emulate and duplicate. Nobody tries to be Jerry Cantrell. And Dirt is the greatest AIC album, as well as one of the greatest albums of all time. But you probably don't even own it. Smarten up.

  • @darinhaji33 Layne hasn't even beendead,but maybe a decade retard.And Maynard?he's a TOOL!!!!Pay attention to the music.Not to whay your friends say?

  • @MrSpiderwired Better guitar player, but Layne was the better singer, and lyricist hands down

Nobody could ever come up with such complex poetry like Staley.

  • @Wesson4 Majority of the lyrics were written by Jerry. Also, in my opinion most of Layne's lyrics were simpler than Jerry's, which is not a bad thing at all. Layne was amazing regardless of anything. lol

  • @PerfectParasite disagree 100 percent. Layne wrote over 50 percent of the AIC lyrics.

And I find the lyrics he wrote to be much more complex than Cantrell's style.

Just listen to Frogs or Angry Chair. Those songs are so deep and tripy. Only Layne could have come up with that.

  • @Wesson4 50%?? Are you saying that Layned and Jerry co-wrote every song, or that Layne wrote 50% of all the songs? Two dramatically different claims. Either way, that's not true. All you have to do is look at the credits in Dirt. Layne really only came into the picture as a song writer in the last self titled album.

Jerry is clearly a better song writer, but who cares? It was a collaborative effort on all parts to make these songs, and as you can see

  • @investmjr Read my posts again. Layne wrote 50 percent of the lyrics. Jerry the other 50. I feel like Layne's lyrics were better and darker.

People don't give Layne enough credit. He did alot for the band,.

  • @investmjr How is Jerry better? He's a better guitar player. But that's it. Lyrically and Vocally Layne is the best.

  • @Wesson4 Cantrell wrote most of the lyrics. Would? Rooster Them Bones. You are saying Layne wrote better lyrics then those? Sorry man no way.

  • @RadioFriendlyNoise Umm Angry Chair, Nutshell, Rotten Apple, Love Hate Love, Confusion, I can't remeber, Man in the Box?

    Ya I'd say he's better.

  • @Wesson4 they are good, but not any wair near as good as what Cantrell wrote.

  • @RadioFriendlyNoise lol really? So you basically just think that because the music like them bones and rooster was on the radio more, that it's better?

I would probably say nutshell and rain when i die( another Staley song)

    are probably AIC's best works.

funny that both of them involve Layne's writing.

  • @Wesson4 retard did I saw that? no I did not you fucking moron. The Rooster is one of their best songs lyrically because of the meaning behind it. One of my other favorite songs is Junkhead. Also listening to Cantrell's solo albums he is a better lyricist then Layne.
