In my opinion A star is born is Judy's best film yes the wizard of oz is fantastic but as a serious actress A star is born shows her true acting ability as an actress and compared to her earlier movie fluff like The Wizard of oz or meet me in st. Louis cotton candy fluff. A star is born showed her real versatility as an actress. In this song from A star is born she shows true emotion, she got snubbed of an Oscar for this role. And losing to all people Grace Kelly.
you ask "why must death constantly retire such great talent" simple, thats life, life is short...as the great poet said, "Better to have loved and lost, that to have never loved. we all take a dirt nap..live life, enjoy the bitter sweet moments..they'll be your last companion, on deaths door.we come in alone, we go out alone.
This performance is from Judy's last weekly telecast [March 29, 1964]. She gave it her all, because she knew she'd never be able to duplicate her performance on someone else's variety show (and she didn't).
There really is no one who sings this song anywhere as near as good as Judy. Many have tried and failed to give it half the feeling this song demands. Judy was the greatest... sad she wasn't with us longer.
Torchy & supremely soulful, Garland is magnificent both in sight and sound giving a performance off the chart...as a teen in the sixties sat spellbound every Sunday Night watching this Historic Event and wondering why stupid people were saying negative things...finally figured it out, they were jealous of all that talent and how sad...Bravo Judy, you are loved and missed!!!
Everytime I see this I'm even more impressed. What a hottie in a killer voice. And about this actual singular performance? - I haven't seen anything ever in ANY genre that can match this performance for vocal and physical skill. It's as if this woman actually lived this song and then recorded it. I unapologetically declare that the level of live performance skill in this song is UNMATHCHED IN RECORDED HUMAN HISTORY! (And I'll gladly fight any man who says otherwise. Yes - Gladly!)
They can disarm and relax with the smile and the laugh, as much as with any other expression. It's about the fullness of their feelings and thoughts. Yeah, I can't think of anybody doing this now.
Why must death constantly retire such a great talent like this one, just not fair DAMMIT! This great woman has just skipped right over this generation & faded away from the public's interest leaving us with these awful newbie's with their awful new shit. It's no wonder people like to dwell on the past so much.
Let's just thank GOD for the camera's that caught all their magic for safe keeping for us future generations to REALLY see something magical compaired to the CRAP being made right now.
@localibran I couldn't agree more with your comments, localibran. It's a pity that the technology back then wasn't as sophisticated as it is now, what with HD, 3D and LCD etc. It is an irony that we have reached such a high standard with the technology, but there is very little in the way of quality entertainment or talent. Judy's TV Show is good video quality, but I guess nothing could compare with actually seeing her perform live.
THANK YOU for putting this up. It was up a while ago but was taken down. THIS is the absolute best live version of Judy doing this song I have ever seen. Outstanding.
Her voice was so powerful - and then so soft. She had complete possession.

A friend of Judy's summed her up best - he said she was the greatest act of the twentieth century. He got it in one.

My favourite Judy song...I was lucky enough to see daughter Lorna Luft sing this in a concert in 1996....a fantastic song!
