The "cool" crowd didn't like Bobby very much in he 60s, but I'm glad he was there. . . .and that he had some success. . . . .simple lyrics, really nice song. . . . .thank you Bobby, and thank you, Sonny Curtis. . . . .thanks for posting!
I've always liked this tune, takes me back to Jmy junior high days here in California. Glen Campbell also did a version, it's on the Wichita Lineman album. Both Bobby and Glen's takes on it are good.
I've been searching for this song for days......couldn't remember who sang it and what all the words were! I just stumble upon it here and what a nice surprise!!
A frog? I never knew that!! I thought I heard him talk about the cricket having something to do with Buddy Holly. But dang, we are talking about 40 (at least) years ago. lol Thanks for letting me know. :)
LOVED LOVED the cricket...lol. He was on a talk show one time and talked about him being the only person in the world who cut his toe with rice crispies :) Anyone else remember that story? (I'm a forever fan!!!)
Of course, it was a frog noise, not a cricket. Many people made the wrong connection, and on one of the talk shows, he mentioned having a cricket sound in his act, too, so people could compare it to his signature frog. And yes, heard the rice krispie story on Carson or Douglas or Merv...
One website I just checked says "having a ball with a couple 'a bob," and in British "bob" is a very small amount of money. That's not official, though, just a website that posts lyrics. I always thought it was a "cup full of pog" (popular Hawai'ian drink".
About 10 years ago on my way back from seeing my little sister at her dorm at USC, a Los Angeles station know for its obscure oldies, classics, and standards played this song and it blew my mind. It must have been some 30 years since I had heard it. I immediately ordered it online. The songs that can get lost in one's head.
That being said, what does he say at 39 seconds? "Having a ball on a couple of(_____)"???
And I disagree with the poster that claimed Campbell's version was better. WHAT???
As I remember this was the B side to "Summer the first time" on original release. I have always played it more than the A side. Thank you so much for posting it and the vid.
Don't know BG, but know folks who do and who worked with him...the cricket sound was his "trademark". He'd throw it in just to see what reaction he'd get, particularly when he was singing with someone who wasn't expecting it. The man has a sense of humor. Nice to see in someone so very talented. Thanks for sharing this one.
A few thoughts: first, BG seems like an awfully, awfully nice guy. I remember him vividly being on the Mike Douglas (another awfully nice guy)Show regularly when I was a kid. Second, he does a serviceable version here, but I have to say Glen Campbell's cover of this song (also available on YouTube) is light years better. Check it out. Third, what is Bobby G up to these days?
Thanks so much for posting this great song! After hearing one of his cricket sounds in it, I had to listen a few more times to be sure it wasn't my imagination. He doesn't even crack a smile, but he sure slipped it in. How cool! Pretty slick if you ask me! Thanks ever so much for taking me back at least 40 years tonight.
Wow! I literally haven't heard this wonderful song in about 40 years!! Oh, the memories.... What an underrated song, too bad it didn't get the attention I think it deserved.
OK, Bobby Godsboro was the first singer I fell in love with. Having a brother who sas (his words) "Just A Singer in a Rock and Roll Band", when he went to the US with his band, he came back with 45's from America for me....of Bobby Goldsboro.
And why do you hate Honey, Ryoushi? Everyone claims to hate that song, and yet it was his biggest hit ever. Personally, I love it. Even if the maudlin lyrics turn you off - how can you overlook that beautiful melody??
My favourite song by Mr G. The wistfulness and the optimism said a lot for hopeful kids listening in on portable radios back in that era of incubation and innocence.
This is a cool song! I laugh because we used to give each other a hard time growing up. I made fun of my Bobby Goldsboro hairdo in high school. I'll tell you what..... Now that we all have responsibilities, it sure is nice to escape to a mellow song for a brief few minutes.
I do recall hearing this song enroute to New York Laguardia airport from Cleveland Hopkins on one of United Airline's cruise-a-long channels back in 1969.
they dont play songs like this cos that word "cheesey" (embarrassed)gets in the way, well like many dj's on oldies stations they were their at the time and they did'nt think they were cheesey "embarrassing " then, so they have to go along with the younger folk who aint got a clue about that generation of music i think that most music these days is embarrassing. at least in 30 years time this generation will be able to look back and trueley say that the naughtys were CHEESEY
This song barely broke the top 40 in 1968 reaching only #36. Because of that and the 'unfamiliarity factor' not many oldies or classic MOR stations are willing to play it. In any case, I consider this as well as "It's Too Late" and "Summer (The First Time)" to be among the better tunes Goldsboro recorded.
he got the sixth string (s) lowered to D.

WASH-FM in Wash DC used to play this
song big time.. it sounded so great in
FM stereo. they also ranked all of Bobby's
songs high up top 10. Great little hit, made
back in the days America had a heart.
Thanks Bobby Goldsboro for all the GREAT music -- we love you !

In fact, it was a frog sound (he did a cricket for awhile, so that you could tell the difference).
