@caswombat you are totally wrong! That horse would have refused if it didn't think it could do it, and it would have showed signs of pain when landing if it had any. In the huge shows like that they have vets all around- that horse will be medicated wrapped and well taken care of. And most of the time when someone sets a record they do it once.
@49mollydolly Right, so if it was completely down to the horse, and wasn't being ridden, would it jump it? Nope. Nick guided the horse over it, and apparently you dont know how big of a part the rider plays in showjumping. Obviously the horse is doing alot of work, but the rider worked hard to get the horse over it safely without knocking it.
@49mollydolly uhh......no. just no. If you tried to free jump a horse over something this big, they would either stop or attempt to get over it and most likely hurt themselves. Like nommlemon said, nick guided him to and over it.
This Horse makes it look easy. Is this as high of a jump or higher the HUASO in 1949? You know... the one that wasn't recorded as being the highest because there wasn't a pulic audience but only an audience of 25? Just curious.
@AdorkableLex It's easy enough to criticize, but it's even easier to see an idiot. If this is bad riding, then I don't know what you'd class as good riding.
@AdorkableLex I love how your criticising the person who has set the world record for jumping height, and is generally well known to be one of the best riders around. Cant wait to see you beating this record :)
Reiter wie Nick skelton kümmern sich gut um ihre Pferde .. Und wenn du mal nachdenkst und genau guckst sieht du das die Hufeisen mit diesem abdämpfenden Stoff ausgestattet sind :D
@alessamausiii I am more than positive these people know what they are doing. These horses have powerful legs that can withstand the impact, not to mention highly expensive horse boots to absorbed the shock and protect the legs from bad damage. This is an outstanding example of trust, courage, and agility for both horse and rider. Must you really comment if your not going to say something positive ? thanks.
@smoeltjeslover ??? These horses train to do this stuff. How is it poor for the horse? Their legs are more than strong enough to withstand this kind of jumping, it's absolulte acceptable...
I agree, jumping these kind of heights on a regular basis would probably be quite cruel and hard on the horse, but its a once off kind of thing and boy did he fly!! :D
Nick Skelton & Everst Lastic (a German bred grey gelding) - 1979 Olympia British High Jump Record of 7 foot 7 15/16 (say 7' 8'') (2m 35cm) - i have the full recording , will post soon
i think lastic still holds the record breaking title at olympia for this jump which is 2.32m, which i think is just short of 7ft 8 inch...amazing talent...
whoa that's amazing. If you think about it, it's really beautiful too; the amount of trust between the horse and rider must be insane. People who think this is cruel just haven't thought about it; this will have taken years of training and trust building and this is what the horse wants to do, look how much he's enjoying it! He's amazing, and other horses will be too, so shut up about it! :)
@falloutboyforever100 The only thing thats cruel about it is how absolutely brutal this level of jumping is on a horse's joints. Do you understand how easy it is for a horse to break bones when consistently jumping fences like this? It's so dangerous for the horse. It may be fun for him, but it is up to the person to make the smart choice for the horse's health.
@LoveMyHorseShazam Tru but you get more consistent / repetitive joint strain at high level dressage - I hardly think he jumps this sort of thing every day / every time he jumps!
if the horse didnt think he was capable of jumping it, he OBVIOUSLY wouldnt have .. i hav started jumping 1.40 with 3 of my horses and they are in the best form they have ever been in ... iv had horses since i was born trust me .. THEY LOVE IT .. great vid :)
The horse wouldn't do it if it didnt want to...and i have heard people say "showjumping is cruel" or something like that, in the wild horses naturally have to jump things like logs or things like that ,so they are well used to it !
I agree with troublegirl197 and JessAnimalObsessed ... and if you dont like to see an animal jumping and having the time of its life , then don't be watching videos of it !!!
Umm, HELLO? You copied this straight out of ozzymite101's video! Pirate. And seriously people, if Lastic didn't want to jump this, Lastic wouldn't have jumped it! You see his ears up before he takes off = he's eager to jump! Sheesh, people, get a clue about horses before you mouth off.
Ähm endschuldige mal wer einem pferd sowas an tut hat kein verstand mehr sowas macht niemals ein pferd freiwillig!! es arm ! wenn hier wer keine ahnung hat dann wohl eher du ne?!;)
good lord people. its not like the horse HAS to jump this. if it really wanted to it could refuse the jump.you cant force it to do anything. it has fully working brain with intellect and will. the people that say "poor horse" are obviously forgetting this horse is intelligent enough to decide whether or not to jump this.
*sigh* For all of you people going on about the "poor horse", obviously you don't have much knowledge of high level jumpers. These horses only get to attempt these fences because they have proven they have the talent for it. Trust me, a horse faced with a fence too big for it will do only one thing: slam on the brakes! Also, record fences are a rarity for a horse to face. Most don't have the talent and those that do will only do them a very few times in their whole career for their well being.
I don't know where that HannuGirl10 got her facts but I don't think I believe a word she is saying lol. 11-12 feet or 10 feet? You are just pulling information out of your ass aren't you?
Anyway this is incredible and that horse did what it wanted to, if he didn't want to he could easily refuse the jump.
Nick Skelton currently holds the British Show Jumping High Jump record, at 7 ft 7in 5/16th (2.32m) set at Olympia in 1978 with Lastic.
@horsey511 No, Lastic did not get shot because of problems with his fetlocks after this jump, as far as I know. Apparently, Lastic lived to be 21 or somewhere around that. So your answer is no, he did not get shot after this jump. Also-- look and see, Lastic canters off perfectly after the jump, so he's not lame and there would be no reason to shoot him. And we don't go around shooting good horses for no reason, do we? :)
ur totally wrong, it was about 11-12 feet or 10 feet, because the horse had to be shot down because the terrible force on its legs, the horse went crazy ---> SHOT
Holy shizz:) there was a record over 8ft but didn't count back then, because there was only a small crowd.. But he jumped a jump just like that. On a angle, that's why he got so high I think;) very good jumper !! He flew over that jump....
The horse wasn't forced, but still, ist this kind of "competition" really necessary? In showjumping, horses already have to render quite a lot, that should be enough.
@troublegirl: Yes, horses fetlock joint and pastern are specifically made to be able to absorb shock on landing, however they're not made to absord shock on landing while coming down from a 6 ft. hurdle.
@Twinkle2001 that was way more than 6 feet. more like 8 feet. and if you don't like showjumping...don't do it. but don't complain about how its bad for the horse and stuff because it really isn't. if it was bad for the horse, people wouldn't do it.
@crazywatergirl923 you got to be kidding if you really think jumping that high is not bad for the horses - or, maybe, you are just too naiv. People have always used animals for entertainment purposes regardless if it could cause injuries or death.
@Twinkle2001 dont watch it if you dont like it...... it doesnt matter it happened and you cant change that.....ive seen horses flip over jumps and die on the spot...sooo if you think that its sooo horrible dont jump :)))
(continued)"It was quite scary as the high-jump was wider and I think more difficult and daunting than the wall and he was not a big horse" says Nick. "After Lastic smashed through it the first time I was ready to leave the arena but I was told to go back in and in those days I did as I was told".
The following quote from the Olympia programme from 2007:
In 1978 21 year old Nick Skelton and Lastic cleared seven feet, seven and five sixteenths of an inch - a record that still stands 29 years later (in 2007). It took Nick three attempts to clear the imposing fence - and after the first failure Nick was not sure he wanted to go on.
@xTessie13x actually theres another video found on youtube that shows the world record jump of 2.47 meters which is roughly 8ft 1in. done in 1949 by a horse named Huaso
OMG I KNOW THE SONG BUT I CANT REMEMBER!

@Twinkle2001 that was way more than 6 feet. more like 8 feet. and if you don't like showjumping...don't do it. but don't complain about how its bad for the horse and stuff because it really isn't. if it was bad for the horse, people wouldn't do it.
crazywatergirl923 1 year ago

To put things straight, this is the BRITISH (not world) high jump record of 7'7 5/16", which still stands today.
HKW1994 1 year ago
@HKW1994 hey it is 7ft7 that he holds, i wouldn't know, but my freind is his nephew and apparently it nick that holds the world record to this day :)
xTessie13x 1 year ago
@xTessie13x yeah if you read what I said it was seven feet, seven and five sixteenths of an inch or 7'7 5/16" which is just over 7 feet 7 inches
HKW1994 1 year ago
@xTessie13x actually theres another video found on youtube that shows the world record jump of 2.47 meters which is roughly 8ft 1in. done in 1949 by a horse named Huaso
