That cannon is not a good competitor choice, try compaing it to the cannon HS10 for a fair test, not a cannon lower end, against a sony upper end. Pointless.
Sorry I should of said HFS10, since it's closer I believe in price range and it also has a larger lens to let in more light than the HV20, I believe. But yes the sony xr500 is best for low light.
I think you're a bit misinformed. The Canon HV series is not low end. Even the latest HS10 is not better than the HV20 in some cases. For example there's a video on viemo, "HFS10 vs HV20 vs XR520" where the HV20 actually outperforms the rest in several spots. The Sony XR500V is a special new unit in its outstanding low light performance.
Hey thanks for the video, it was useful... looks like sony cameras keep trying to get the right focus all the time, so if you want a good video you have to use manual focus (if possible). ;)

I think HS10 is dark place performance and the sensor performance not so different compared with HV20. Because, it is the conventional CMOS sensor.
and I do not have HS10.
