@BlackSwanized And it happens yet again... There is a whole population out here who never thought XTC was any big thing, and like this version of the song just fine. I met a girl who wanted me to like XTC as much as she did before giving it up, and I couldn't even fake it. So give it a rest. ;-)
@TheObknox That's because contrary to popular belief...drummers get all the pussy. Women love aggression and rhythm, something about beating on skins make woman wet, at least thats been my history.
I always thought it was a shame that some of the more powerful (and controversial) lyrics in this cover seem poorly enunciated, almost as if the singer is deliberately making them hard to decipher, e.g. 1:48 "Peter merely said any kind of love is all right" and 2:40 "He died grinning on live TV". You'd have trouble making either of those out without a lyric sheet.
Well, I like this version better, althought it's not an original CTD song. XTC's version is also longer, it has one more verse ( if you haven't noticed, CTD omit the second verse of the original), but, musically speaking, this one fills me much more, Ellen Reid's voice is awesome, and the song goes faster too. Love both versions, but if I had to pick one, I'd pick this one.
Just had a listen to XTC's version. THIS one is far more structured...and has a better hook. Ellen Reid does an incredible job...along with with the male backup, organ, harmony, etc. There's just more to it. Credit to XTC though....they did write it.
I am really glad to see this video on here my dad is in this video he is the hotdog man at 2:44 most of my family did not get to see this video . And it is Jeff Daniels at the starting and he is Canadian
@m00ph00 It's Jeff Daniels. This song is on the Dumb & Dumber soundtrack and Jeff Daniels starred in that movie along side Jim Carrey....hilarious movie, btw.
They always did that cheesy stuff with songs that were on movie sound tracks. Directors would usually get one of the stars to have a cameo in the music video or the singer would be put on a set resembling a part in the movie. Just look at Cyndi Laupers "Good Enough" video...prime example.
@reivenlocke: doesn't matter whether it's XTC or CTD...if u were born later then I understand u like it, but I like CTD better because i was part of the 90's phenomenon...don't tell me it's inferior coz I myt think the same way as XTC's (but I won't go that route)...The point: XTC abd CTD are both good bands, but they're just apart by the timeline they belong to...whether it's XTC and CTD, we have two good renditions of the song here...
@reivenlocke In my honest opinion, I actually disagree, CTD's added a lot more soul and and sound to it. The sound in the original sounded a little too thin. But still, lots of respect for the original writers.
I love XTC and I love this song! Still, I like this version better than the overly obvious video from Andy and Colin. A previous comment noted that XTC were somewhat reluctant about making videos. After watching the original version of this, I can understand why.
This is a great cover of a great song! Although I like the XTC version of the song better, this video is far superior to XTCs overly obvious, American-bludgeoned production.
@reivenlocke The inspiration for the song came from a Jack O Lantern that Andy Partridge carved, that he stuck on a fencepost in his garden. He said that seeing it decay more and more each day made him feel sorry for it, so he decided to make it a hero in a song.
@reivenlocke Andy has said the song isnt about any one person, or persons, but rather any leader, religious or otherwise, who has been too good to be true.
Peter Pumpkinhead is like a character that represents all of those people.
@mcdonaldman56 well, Africa by Toto is rubbish to start with (but maybe i'm only being biased because my sister plays it EVERY GODDAMN TIME i'm in her car). and pardon the troll, I was being fussy. this is just one of those songs that I feel shouldn't be tampered with, under no circumstance. *white flag*
@psychosulk That means that almost all covers are terrible and unneeded. for example. Africa- Toto Journey- Dont Stop Believin' and Alphaville- Forever young were all ripped off so bad and the new remix sucked so hard im surprised their heads didn't implode. Not every cover is great, or even decent. At least they didn't butcher it by adding in a line of rap and calling it their own.
Una versión muy buena de la cancion.Yo primero escuche el original de XTC, luego escuche a The Dummies y, con todo el respeto a XTC, le dieron a esta nueva versión el toque que le faltaba para ser exelente como ahora lo es.
Is it just me, or is there something quintessentially Canadian about this video? Well, regardless, I think that's what makes this video oh so remarkably GREAT!
is peter pumpkinhead supposed to be jesus?? makes sense if it is, public crucifixion, the people trying to act like him after his death when they walk towards the church - communion when they line up and eat the pumpkin given by a "priest" - the lyrics about how he "made too many enemies of the people who would keep us on our knees"
@tripe2004 No, this song is actually about Jacky Chan, few people know this but Jacky lived and almost identical life to Jesus, but instead of being crusified he went on to star in many martial arts movies. :P
@tripe2004 The idea is essentially trhat if someone these days came and did the sort of things a figure like jesus did, it still wouldnt end well at all for him, i think.
Andy Partridge of XTC, who wrote this song, said it was about an unnamed person who could be any number of people: JFK, Jesus, John Lennon even.
It's up to the listener to interpret it in their own way - there's no right or wrong.
The name, incidentally, was inspired by an old, shrivelled pumpkin Partridge had carved for his children. It still sat on the garden fence, forlorn, months later, so he penned this song in its honour.
@shanelizard Someone's upset that they're canadian. Anyway I didn't mean it as a slight against canadians only that this band is the ultimate mid-nineties generic label vehicle.
Though it is senseless to argue about something as subjective as art, technically you're quite wrong about this 'cover'.
Crash Test Dummies made a very smart gamble putting Ellen Reid out front for this one. Though the XTC single was catchy (leading to it's burst of popularity), vocally it was completely uninteresting. It was like a rough draft version to be later recorded by some ringers. Crash Test Dummies delivered.
Familiarity sometimes skews perspective of these matters.

By the way, The Crash Test Dummies absolutely IDOLISE XTC; I'd wager even they themselves would put XTC's original above this effort.
I rarely prefer covers over the originals. Inherently, the writers of the song have personal and deep emotion about the lyrics that surface in the musical nuances - normally not well reproduced by a band just trying to repeat the song note for note. But Crash Test Dummies took their own direction, replacing XTC's fuller band with simplified instrumentals and their trademark baritone vocal backup. By moving Reid out in front, they nailed this. Thumbs up Crash Test Dummies!
