Yeah, when I went to Hong Kong in 2011 this year, I expected everyone to look that typical East Asian look. However, I was surprised to find a lot of white people, and even South Asians (Indians, Pakistanis, etc.) here and there. I told my parents of them, and now watching this video, I'm embarrassed to know that they probably understood what I was saying about them!
@keynesac 75% of the Chinese population in HK originally came from Mainland China (not even that long ago), The indigenous inhabitants of HK only take up 25% of the Chinese population. If u're Chinese but not a native like a New Territories villager or a boat person, then u are a descendant of Mainland Chinese too.
Why are so many people in HK (I don't mean everyone of course) so shallow & ignorant about history & politics?! All they care about is the latest mobile phone or the coolest trainers.
@Rab1975bit u think u " PRC " mainland Chinese came here after 1997, same as our HK ppl 's grandpa that came here in 1940???? u think same people????? Chinamen are Chinamen.. Your fucking third world county only use army to captured Hong Kong !
I thought it was staged because the host was talking about how Indians wouldn't greet each other even when they bumped into each other or something, haha.
I don't know the situation now? But in 1999, I was working for a short while as an ethnic Chinese in Italy on the outskirt of Milan in the town Vigevano where most people didn't speak English. I was treated so nicely by the people whom I encountered there. And there I discovered so much similarity between the traditional Italian culture and the traditional Chinese culture. It is one of the most beautiful experiences in my life! I still thank God when I think of it...
Wow i'm totally impressed with him, back here in canada none of those who i know who are cantonese can speak 1/100 of what he can speak.... Its quite sad since out of around 30 i know who are cantonese only me and another girl can speak it fluently...
Well he was born and raised there..what more to expect? The Cantonese you are referring to may not have been there and speak like that and have a different environment and mentality, if they do. Cuz I do know many Cantos in US don't know how to speak, or speak poorly, but at least they know their heritage. Don't judge if they can't speak the language!
I'm wow-ed all around with the presenter and interviewees. As a former ex-pact ABC, it's great to see more non-Chinese speak as well as the locals!! Thanks for sharing!
I do believe people who are born and bred in Hong Kong or have lived there for generations, should learn to read and write in Chinese. A certain degree of assimilation is beneficial, whatever the skin colour, but at the same time one's culture must not be forgotten. It is the balance between the two that a lot of people need to find.
@turbobenx it was illustrating the fact that unlike indians, all the italians would say hi to each other on the street if they knew each other. The guy who bumped into him was indian as was the presenter.
@Jovitinha im pretty sure he can. in a documentary i think he grew up and opted to attend the local schools or something and not international schools. so unless he like failed every class, he'd have to know how to read/write chinese.
Awesome. I've never lived in a place where I was "supposed" to be. It's nice to see others also living out of the place they typically are associated with.
I totally agree.I love Hong Kong. But for me no matter how long I stay in third country, I will say I am from Hong Kong. The original place that were born. Now for my generation,very easy to know news from my home country.
Cool!! i'm from macau myself but i'm indeed a big fan of hk too~~~so i see that ur in melbourne now, rite?....same here...doing my high school in aus....
The Italian's pronunciation is accented a little, but the Indian (Ashok) is perfect. No detectable accent.

@keynesac 我们也不要说香港有多少是大陆过去的,我们就说香港有多少不是广东那里过去的好了,香港原来但是渔村。你拿什么地方的身份就是什么地方的人,这个是国际通用的。
pommeying 5 months ago
@pommeying 並非有地方身份就等同該地方人,要語言文化同人文文化相近,融入咗當地文化,方可自稱為該地人
