Well, the universe is 78 billion lightyears across, but I still don't understand something, and it's kinda hard to explain.. This is impossible, but if you traveled 78 billion lightyears across, and if you were on the edge of the universe, would you like not be able to get past it? It's so confusing, but will it not like let you pass if you traveled 78 billion lightyears? Would there be like a magic invisible wall that blocks you to going further? Please explain :/

All the estimates of the size and age of the universe seem to point to the belief that we are at the center of the universe, yes we are at the center of our observable universe but i highly doubt that we are the center of the universe as a whole we can never accurately determine the size and age of the universe.

no no the big bang surely happened 13.7 billion years ago, we know this because that is our horizon or are field of view. When we reach the end of that field of view we see the beginning of the universe because we are looking further back in time. If you research WMAP you will then believe the universe is that age! The reason the universe is 78-79 Billion light years across is because they are adding the expansion rate (dark energy) which is a fixed rate everywhere in the universe.

No worries though if you just read say, a brief history of time or fabric of the cosmos you will see that we know for certain the age of the universe but we believe that the size of the universe is infinite. We are talking here about the size of our cosmic horizon not the size of the entire universe, which is easy to mix up. @tdarnell it's impossible to observe the edge of the universe, because we just can't see that far. The big bang was 13,7 billion years ago, so we can't see further than 13.7 lightyears, because the universe didn't exist yet at the point we would see beyond that horizon.
@tdarnell So your saying FTL travel is posible if space time is distorted, ie 2two points being 2 million light years apart but due to subspace distortion they could be 1 million or 12 million etc.
Estimates as to the size of the universe are irrelevant; if the universe (or the space stuff of which it is composed) is continuously expanding, then it's actual size is always icreasing. A far more important question is, "What is the universe contained by, and expandng INTO?" The nothingness in which the universe resides, and within which it is expanding, how large is THAT? Does that go on forever? Is there no end to the nothingness in which the universe exists?

The question of what something that contains all space and time is expanding into is also rather meaningless and any answer has to lie outside of both space and time, which is something we'll never experience directly.

My understanding, my religion tell me the size of universe (first layer only from 7 layers) is 500years. One day religion equal 50.000 years in the world. No worries though if you just read say, a brief history of time or fabric of the cosmos you will see that we know for certain the age of the universe but we believe that the size of the universe is infinite. We are talking here about the size of our cosmic horizon not the size of the entire universe, which is easy to mix up. At about 2:21, the speed of light is said to be, and I quote "Three hundred thousand metres per second." This is equal to 300,000 metres per second. This is absolutely false, the speed of light is about 300,000,000 metres per second or 300,000 km per second. I hope the author is able to change this, since it is a very silly mistake.

you say observable universe, this is kind of a non answer, the universe can not have an end - its not like if you go far enough (you have to imagine for this one i know...) your not going to reach the "end" of anything. asking the size of the universe is like asking what is the average number of infinity (or something like that) you just know the size is unmeasurable. if i am infinity miles away from your house, how many miles till you reach half way? answer = infinity

@tdarnell it's impossible to observe the edge of the universe, because we just can't see that far. The big bang was 13,7 billion years ago, so we can't see further than 13.7 lightyears, because the universe didn't exist yet at the point we would see beyond that horizon.

Estimates as to the size of the universe are irrelevant; if the universe (or the space stuff of which it is composed) is continuously expanding, then it's actual size is always icreasing. A far more important question is, "What is the universe contained by, and expandng INTO?" The nothingness in which the universe resides, and within which it is expanding, how large is THAT? Does that go on forever? Is there no end to the nothingness in which the universe exists?

The question of what something that contains all space and time is expanding into is also rather meaningless and any answer has to lie outside of both space and time, which is something we'll never experience directly.
