I think Amy did the best, because I think she expressed the most emotion. Sally did good too, but her voice is just a bit too high pitched and it doesn't sound as depressing, but deffiantly had emotion. As for Fiona's version, I think her voice is too deep and did not show the depressing feeling. It barely had emotion in my ears. It also kinda sounds like she's a bit bored.
But you know, it's all a different taste and different opinions. Your more then welcome to disagree with me if you wish.
I think fiona's voice is a little too deep or maybe just not feminine enough. don't get me wrong, I like female singers with deeper voices, but it just doesn't fit here. Sally's voice is too theatrical for it, withe the carnival tones and falsely highpitched voice. just a little childish in a way. Amy Lee I think did the best with this song. maybe a little theatre like but she gives true expression and emotion, pain and depression. and the Goth sound adds to the sense of hope being truly lost.
Fiona captured the feeling and all around atmosphere the most I think. Amy's is to theatrical for lack of a better word. They all work either way. I think it comes down to personal taste. Their is no definite "better" one.
Are you people deft? Fionas voice is PERFECT for this song, its not even CLOSE.
She has that dark, haunting voice that fits in with tim burtons style. The others sound like they came out of a happy broadway show or disneys little mermaid. There is no gloom. The song is supposed to be gloomy. I suggest you go back and watch the movie again, then tell me which is better.
How can people say she doesnt care? the song is a melancholic song, anyone who says she sounds like she doesnt care has a very weak ear for music and feelings in them. Please go back to watching little mermaid.
I think the problem people have with Fiona's version is not a lack of emotion, but that they are trying to contrast the song with the film itself. A cover is not meant to replace the original itself, but simply lend the artists' sensibilities to the song.
Amy's version is much more analogous to the original version and the film, where Fiona's sultry voice gives the song a darker, melodious quality.
In the end, this debate seems like little more than a popularity contest. It's personal taste.
Sally is the best. Voice is so beautiful, and yeah. She's the only Sally... I got problem with Fiona and Amy. I see both of them can sing, but I just don't like their voices. Meybe in other songs I would love them, but I don't like to listen this, if Sally isn't singing. Because, this is Sally's song. Not Amy's song, not Fiona's song. >: Yeah I know I may have something wrongly inside my head :D (and in this text, I'm sorry for my english...)
Sally captured Sally's emotions best. I really don't think that needs an explanation. xD
I personally favor Amy's just because I love her voice, and it just fits my style. But I'm not gonna hate on Fiona's. I don't think people can see the difference between when someone says "I don't like it" and "It's bad." Fiona's is good. Like everyone says, the hopelessness is portrayed well (the contralto. THE CONTRALTO :O ). Just not the kind of thing you'll find me listening to.
I think that they are all fantastic. I mean, Amy and Fiona are trying to portray the way they think Sally feels, right? I think they both do a good job explaining her emotions. Amy Lee's version captures the innocence of Sally and her love for Jack. But with Fiona Apple's, you can really feel the sadness that she is trying to portray that Sally felt, because Jack doesn't really acknowledge her. I know everyone has their own personal preference, but there is no reason to hate on either version.
Why must people always bash each others favorites and say that such and such doesn't fit, or so and so isn't emotional, or whatever it is? I have aspects about each one that I like, even though if you were to ask which one i like best, I'd say Amy Lee. This is because I like the harmony the best out of all of them, not becuase I think "the others suck and amy lee forev lolo". Amy lee's is dark, Sally's is concerned, and Fiona is conveying a sence of hopelessness. They've all got good qualities.
The comments that people are putting disapoints me. Amy was Really good, but Fiona's singing matches this so better. Her dark tone matches the depressed sad vibe to the song. And of course, the Original is always a little better too.(:
i think fiona makes it more depressed she tryed but didn't succeed and just gives up, amy more intens sad like she tryed, it didn't happen, but she still wants it and go's trough alot of suffering. i think both of them are beautyfull in it's own way. although i prefer fiona's version if i wanna sing it xD i can't sing that high anymore :(
I have all three versions of this song, and I have to say, I don't care for Amy's version much. Hate me if you want, I don't care. Fiona Apple, on the other hand, made the song sound dark and sultry and soulful. Different, but awesome.
@MegaAandW0 I completely disagree. The fact Fiona doesn't put much empathy in her voice shows that she is emotionally drained like Sally. I'd give it a bit more than 2, to be fair. The film version's is the worst, I think.
I find Fiona's the best thanks to her voice & music. Her's just seemed the best to me by the way she expressed the pain of Sally & chose the sort of eerie yet pretty music unlike Amy who just went with straight up creepy.Sally I find, who is the creator sounds very bland & doesn't show any pain or sadness like Fiona.Sorry Disney, but I find Sally boring.;)
@sofiaisawsome1000 I'm sorry but i think you are wrong... there's so much feeling in Amy lee's version, no doubt... you're not typically an Evanescence Fan are you?
I think that Fiona and Sally are the best because Fiona is portraying the pain that Sally has for Jack. Sally is best too because she is the original creator. I'm not a big fan of Amy Lee and her voice doesn't fit this song!
amy sounded so so so much painful...enough to gve me chills down my spine...no one cud hve sang sally s song better than amy lee...dats for sure...fiona nice try though...:P
I like amy the most. She sounds so much like sally and I love the fact that she put some rock into it and it fits since the movie has that gothic look to it. She gets into it and sounds like she feels what sallys feeling
I also like the fact that her voice is more original than other female singers that sing rock and pop and stuff o:
Sallys voice actress has a very cute voice :D
Fiona is okay. I kinda like her version but she sounds too.. eh
As much as I love Amy Lee and Evanescence (Trust me I do), I believe that Fiona Apple adds this different dimension to the song. I believe that she provides the song more eerie and depressing mood which I truly believe characterizes the song. Like the description all 3 of the songs are special in their own way, but I believe that Apple provides the best cover that is better than the original.
after reading the comments, i was expecting to LOVE Amy's version, then i listened to it. i liked it, dont get me wrong, but i felt it sounded like most of her other stuff and it was predictable.
See now I think Fiona's has the most emotion in her voice. You can just picture her heartbroken and depressed. I like them all but I gotta defend Fiona a bit here.
Amy's is nice, don't get me wrong but much more of the stereotypical, expected and commercial type of dark and haunting. Fiona's is much more downtrodden, sad and lonely. Other than the original actress who sang it, I definitely think Fiona's got the better version.
@ShadowDarkreaper As for my tastes, Since I'm a metal head and into classical orchestra, I prefer the original and Amy's versions. But music is still music. You have to see the beauty behind it and how much emotion is put into it, not who makes it.
I prefer Sally to Amy (unpopular opinion by the sounds of it). Sally sounds innocent and more like her character, Amy sounds too dark. She does have a beautiful voice though <3
Amy lee never changes up her singing style. EVER. I'm not saying thats bad, I agree she is better for this song, but their other music is horrific. It all sounds the same and is haunting to the point where its almost a joke. She sounds nasaly at times. Fiona has 3, almost 4, extrordinary albums, all completely different. But for this song, Amy rocks it. This is coming from a die hard Fiona fan. But its a great song either way.
Amy, of course! i love her voice, is nice sweet very pretty. fiona doesnt sound good sally..mmm im not sure , amy has the voice better than fiona and sally .
1.Amy!
2. sally..i guess
3 fiona (her voice is sooooo bad) sorry amy is the best
I love Amy Lee's version! Sally version is great because it's the orginal of course.
Fiona....well I'm not sure. It's nice but it doesn't match the mood. I find Fiona sounds a bit spooky and halloweeny but not emotional and beautiful like the other two. So I say Amy and Sally's are the best ones.
I would have to say that I love Amy lee's music, and her version is lovely. The original has raw emotions, and a voice that suits Sally's character. I just don't think Fiona's really has the same qualities as either. Her voice sounds a little... off for the song.
I knew that there was 2 versions of the song, that of the orginal song with sally and then Amy Lee's version, I think both songs are so beautiful, Amy's version is haunting yet beautiful and mystrious and alaring!!!, both songs are, I don't really know why they did the song with Fiona in a way she sounds diffent and the song is suposed to be hauting beautiful, kind of opreaish, but Fiona does not sell it for me, she sounds as if she is board and does not care.
Fiona's conveying the apathy people use to bandaid their heartache. Just because you're emotional doesn't mean you're screaming it out with your eyes open wide (on the outside, anyway...)
I don't why people say that it doesn't sound like Fiona could care less. I love her version too! I think that she sounds heartbroken and on the brink of giving up on him. That's what my take on her version is. I still LOVE Amy's version too, obviously.
@MegaAandW0 Fiona's version is in the hopeless point to where it seems she doesn't belive that he would even accept friendship in matter thats what her song tells listen to it a few times thats what i did.
Amy is brings an ellegence and soft haunting precence to the song that brings chills down your spine. her version was creative and wasn't just like "Here's another cover!" it brought a haunting chill to the song.
Where apple had more of a dark spiritual outlook. her version reminded me of a horror film. it was creepy and endering.
Of course the original is the original, though i never really took care into it until lee did a cover, so difinatley i choose amy lee! apple's is good 2 though :)
@ABalloonInNeed I think the main reason people like Amy's better is because she sounds so dark.Fiona is sing it much more smoothly. Alos, I think most of you don't realize the awesome talent of Fiona Apple. I, personally, like her version better but no one can really say that one version is better than the other, they are simply sung in two different styles and both artists are just wonderful.
Amy beats all of them, but I do like all. Amy has a powerful, haunting voice that gives you an impression. Fiona's has a certain quality that makes it seem haunting, but still a bit weak. Sally's sounds weak and fragile, but has a haunting quality as well. I like them all, but Amy is the best.
Fiona sounds awesome, so I like hers best. Sally and Amy tie. Sally is the original and sounds quite cute. Amy's has quite a lot of emotion, but she sort of sounds like she's yawning to me.
And that concludes this random commenter's opinion
Amy. She just has more feeling and deapth (If you could even say that haha) Sally is Ok but Fiona...She sounds like she isn't trying & like she doesn't even care hers has no feeling in it. Amy Is WAY Better. But that is only me. Amy for the win (Lol ;)
I didn´t like Amy´s version in a way that it doesn´t suit the cartoo, otherwise is great, Fiona made it sound grim and the way Sally really has no hope, but Sally´s still the best
1.Fiona-Love it. Morbid yet great. If y'all haven't noticed, Sally is a dead rag doll in Halloween town. She doesn't need to be perky while singing about her love going off to his doom.
2.Sally-Original, great song to burst into.
3.Amy-Pretty, but too pretty. I like it but it's nasally and trying too hard.
Sally has a very innocent voice which is good but Amy Lee puts so much emotion and depth into the song that I think it just comes out better. Fiona sounds terrible...sorry.
@addiople well the girl is supposed to be depressed and I really do not think that when you are that way you wannna be making any loud sounds well it is just me
I would say all three of them are equally good in their own way. If I have to choose however, I would say fiona fits my style more. With Amy, I can see a big orchestra and ball rooms. With Fiona, I see it more fitting to my taste. I see her in a bed at night just holding a pillow with tears in her eyes singing this.
Sally. I never even heard of the other versions until today, but this song in my mind is supposed to sound depressing, yet beautiful, raw, yet some how full of emotion. I just think that Sally's voice fits this song best. Amy Lee is my second choice. Her voice is beautiful, and she did a great job with this song, but I have always heard this song by Sally, but Amy's version is beautiful too, just not the best in my opinion. I'm sorry but I personally just don't like Fiona's voice at all.
i think they were all good but i personallly LOVE Amy Lee she puts a lot of dark beutiful emotion, sally has the perfect voice of that evil-innocent , while fiona seems mellow and soft not all that perfect to fit the song but good enough to fit the character.
Amy is the best, then Sally, but that's because she has to sing it like a zombie, not like a profecional singer and Fiona just isn't worthy to call herself a singer...
ok this might sound stupid and I LOVE AMY i apparently sound like her but i like sally the most mainly cuz she's the one i grew up with singing that song and that fiona chick epically FAILS!
I love the three of them! Sally is sweet and childish (fitting for this kind of character in this kind of town, nor a child nor an adult) Fiona sounds a little bored at first but it's more like she's sad and used to be sad, and Amy is amazing but a little over the top for the movie. I love them all!
I'm sorry guys but although I'm fond of Amy Lee, I think Fiona's voice is amazing for the character. That's the most perfect voice that they could found...
I think Amy Lee sounds the same in every song. To me this is supposed to sound like she's despairing, not singing into a microphone in a very, very controlled voice. I can't equate falling into depression with doing a cover of a great song; Fiona has more emotion in it to me than Amy Lee.
Am I the only one who agrees with the uploader of this video? I'm not trying to start any fights or anything, but I just want to say that I think that they're all special in their own way. Sally's is the classic, and it sounds so depressing yet sweet. Fiona's voice adds a bit more gloom to the song (but some of her words sound a little "slurred", if that's the right term to use). Amy's version sounds very depressing and even a bit haunting, which I like. I think all three versions are very nice.
Amy rocks this song...just amazing...she actually sounds like Sally...if Sally got a voice coach and a lot of lessons...
Fiona just falls flat...it's not the alto thing...she sings it without feeling or proper intonation...the song has purposeful flat notes...it gives it that sad, gothic feel, but it doesn't mean you should sing the whole song flat. I like Fiona, but not on this. She sounds like a kid reciting a speech without fully understanding its depth.
1) Amy: just sounds so beautiful, her voice really fits with the song. Makes it seem more gothy too.
2) Fiona: I love how melancholy and gloomy she sounds. I disagree with other people saying she sounds emotionless. I hear roar emotion when I listen to her
3) Sally: I think I'm one of the only people out there who puts the original at the bottom. I never liked it in the film, as a kid or now, because her voice sounds too high to me.
Favorite of all NBC covers is Fiona. No, hers doesn't sound like the original, but what's the point of doing a cover if it just sounds like a copy of the first? You can listen to this and not even think of the movie, and I love that. Besides, Fiona sounds like a broken woman. It's beautiful.

Amy has passion and sings with heart.
Sally's version is sweet and sounds perfect too.

So long as the artist has put it effort,it's good enough for me :)

To each their own. They are all the same song, but to me, Each sounds like this:
Sally - Very innocent and sad girl who sings of a guy that doesn't notice her, even though she cares and wants to be there.
Fiona - A woman wanting him to notice but she tries to push the pain of being neglected aside.
Amy - A girl who can't live without him and fears the tragedy of him being gone.
You have to see it from all 3 of these views to appreciate the beauty in each version.

@ShadowDarkreaper As for my tastes, Since I'm a metal head and into classical orchestra, I prefer the original and Amy's versions. But music is still music. You have to see the beauty behind it and how much emotion is put into it, not who makes it.

Fiona's Beautiful Amy Lee can get bent for all I care' People give her too much credit
sXesteve1 8 months ago
I believe Amy Lee is the best out of all three.
To me, ( I'll probably regret putting this) fiona kind of ruins the song a little bit, while Amy Lee kind of improves it.

I love all 3 versions they all sound AMAZING to me
sally's voice fits the movie the best
and although all three capture the sadness, fiona sounds more pained yet strong and amy sounds more sad and haunting...
i love all three of these versions though <3 i love The Nightmare Before Christmas!!
MOstudio98 8 months ago 6
I prefer Sally to Amy (unpopular opinion by the sounds of it). Sally sounds innocent and more like her character, Amy sounds too dark. She does have a beautiful voice though <3

1. amy SHE DAH BOMB
2.sally shes really good but after listening to amy lee so many times i kinda forgot what it was supposed to sound like :P
3. fiona she has a good voice but it doesnt work for the song
hi5hellokitty 8 months ago 3

3 fiona (her voice is sooooo bad) sorry amy is the best
bellamagix 8 months ago
I love Amy Lee's version! Sally version is great because it's the orginal of course.
Fiona....well I'm not sure. It's nice but it doesn't match the mood. I find Fiona sounds a bit spooky and halloweeny but not emotional and beautiful like the other two. So I say Amy and Sally's are the best ones.
HMemma547 8 months ago
I would have to say that I love Amy lee's music, and her version is lovely. The original has raw emotions, and a voice that suits Sally's character. I just don't think Fiona's really has the same qualities as either. Her voice sounds a little... off for the song.
CuddlestheEvilteddy 8 months ago
I knew that there was 2 versions of the song, that of the orginal song with sally and then Amy Lee's version, I think both songs are so beautiful, Amy's version is haunting yet beautiful and mystrious and alaring!!!, both songs are, I don't really know why they did the song with Fiona in a way she sounds diffent and the song is suposed to be hauting beautiful, kind of opreaish, but Fiona does not sell it for me, she sounds as if she is board and does not care.

My opinion, which is no better than anyone else's.
Amy? Wonderful, as always. Drifting, haunting.
Sally? Perfect. Exactly what it SHOULD be, because it's how it was written to be.
Fiona? I completely different take on the song than I would have imagined. Not my favourite, but I respect it very much.
sicooray 8 months ago 5
Fiona's conveying the apathy people use to bandaid their heartache. Just because you're emotional doesn't mean you're screaming it out with your eyes open wide (on the outside, anyway...)
TheLukeBot 8 months ago 2
I don't why people say that it doesn't sound like Fiona could care less. I love her version too! I think that she sounds heartbroken and on the brink of giving up on him. That's what my take on her version is. I still LOVE Amy's version too, obviously.

@MegaAandW0 Fiona's version is in the hopeless point to where it seems she doesn't belive that he would even accept friendship in matter thats what her song tells listen to it a few times thats what i did.
AmyRoseSucks1 6 months ago 3
Amy is brings an ellegence and soft haunting precence to the song that brings chills down your spine. her version was creative and wasn't just like "Here's another cover!" it brought a haunting chill to the song.
Where apple had more of a dark spiritual outlook. her version reminded me of a horror film. it was creepy and endering.
Of course the original is the original, though i never really took care into it until lee did a cover, so difinatley i choose amy lee! apple's is good 2 though :)

ABalloonInNeed 10 months ago 44
@ABalloonInNeed That's just her style. She's very deep. She is a very emotional singer. It just doesn't show too much in this song.
tweetycool123 5 months ago

1.) Amy Lee she has feeling
2.) Sally its the original and pretty good
and thats everybody! Sorry but Fiona sounded soooo bored and just no real feeling so she not on there!

Sally's is like a teen or young adult.
Fiona's is like a blues-jazz mix.
Amy's is more sad with feeling.

Amy. She just has more feeling and deapth (If you could even say that haha) Sally is Ok but Fiona...She sounds like she isn't trying & like she doesn't even care hers has no feeling in it. Amy Is WAY Better. But that is only me. Amy for the win (Lol ;)

Kega100CP 11 months ago
Sally has a very innocent voice which is good but Amy Lee puts so much emotion and depth into the song that I think it just comes out better. Fiona sounds terrible...sorry.

FlypaperGirl 10 months ago
I would say all three of them are equally good in their own way. If I have to choose however, I would say fiona fits my style more. With Amy, I can see a big orchestra and ball rooms. With Fiona, I see it more fitting to my taste. I see her in a bed at night just holding a pillow with tears in her eyes singing this.
Industryscorpio 11 months ago
I'm sorry but I personally just don't like Fiona's voice at all.

misscarllet 11 months ago
Amy is the best, then Sally, but that's because she has to sing it like a zombie, not like a profecional singer and Fiona just isn't worthy to call herself a singer...

I love the three of them! Sally is sweet and childish (fitting for this kind of character in this kind of town, nor a child nor an adult) Fiona sounds a little bored at first but it's more like she's sad and used to be sad, and Amy is amazing but a little over the top for the movie. I love them all!

-Sally (didn't you ever think that THAT version is what the song was meant to be? So it's perfect, in a way)
-Amy (She's kinda airy for me, but I liked her version)
-Fiona (She does sound depressed and helpless, but idk, I'm not being mean but the song just... doesn't work for altos)
pentra1962 1 year ago

MissStar091995 1 year ago 2
