I believe you are referring to the mathematical constant known as tau, which equates to 2 *pi.

This is because the radius of a circle is mathematically more elegant in solutions to equations than the diameter, eg the periodicity of the sine and cosine functions is tau or 2pi

Pi is still correct, it is still an irrational number and its usage is still very important but it does have flaws as mentioned above.
